Adjustable Spirograph
Philo replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I didn't have ls70 installed either, so at first I didn't see PF cable. I generally put everything (official, unofficial and lsynth constraints) in my LDraw folder, this is the best bet to make sure everything works without headeache, but this time I used the recommended way with separated folder. All I had to do was to explain LDview where my constraints folder was located, and cable showed properly in LDView and LPub. freakwave, could it be possible that you have two LDView installed and the one used by lpub is not the same as the stand-alone one? Otherwise it seems that table rubber bands still need some work (I have not looked closely at LPub code)? right one seems to miss a buffer exchange, I see a round rubber band AND a formed one at page 79, and left one is not there at all. Also, page 87 is weird, with only 4 axle4? And... if you feel like it, here is an icon to indicate assembly rotation. Note on usage: using LPub>edit>Add picture tend to place image command at the wrong place in source file, and it does use an absolute path making the mpd not portable. The best way is thus to place this command in the source before end of step command: 0 !LPUB INSERT PICTURE "RotIcon.png" SCALE 1 OFFSET 0.8 0.8 It is even more tricky on multistep pages, image must be added in last step code (you may place several images there if needed - the images are global to the page). Note that you don't have to refresh the code (lengthy process!!!) to show image, just go to previous/next step and come back. -

It looks really excellent! - The arrows of the same color as the callout box is a nice touch, but as mentionned by Alasdair, maybe they don't show enough on white background? - I am not so fan either of step number font, but I can live with this ;) - Speaking of font, I have a problem here: all fonts are significantly bigger when I render the buildings instructions here (about 50% bigger). Because of this, some pages do not fit paper area. I think it might be caused by some Windows font size setting issue on my machine, does anybody has a hint? - Was the blank page 100 issue corrected? I have no problem here!?! - I've got a LDraw pencil model, available here, maybe it could be added at last step? -
LDraw database - Missing parts!

legolijntje, your link seems dead? The part on PT, required subpart, or download all unofficial parts. -

Ah - my bad: submodel was in my folder (so everything worked fine here), but since it was not referenced, it was not included in mpd... Download it again, it should be fine now. -

OK - indeed, Daniel left the group of parts instead of referencing the (properly stepped) submodel! Replace all the lines "MLCAD BTG Sub-Model_Cuckoo_Mechanic" (and the following line in each case) with a single "1 16 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 Sub-Model_Cuckoo_Mechanic.ldr" and everything should be OK! -

Mmhhh... maybe it's me who made a mistake, I rebuilt the mpd because the original one had indirection issue when opened with LDView. Here is Daniel's original file. What is the assembly part missing steps according to you? -

Indeed, a huge part is already done! Anyway, neither me nor - I think - Daniel would object if someone went a bit further... -

Sorry to revive an old thread... but thanks to the hard work of Daniel Weissengruber, my Cuckoo Clock now has a LDraw/MLCad file with detailed building steps. Many thanks, Daniel! -
Technic General Discussion

There are several reasons... One (and I think it's the case of this very old part - first written 12 years ago!!!) was an administrative issue (get a proper license for the parts) that stalled the certification process for a few years and almost killed the LDraw project. Fortunately this was overcome, and things are much more "fluent" now, with 2 official parts releases per year - and pretty recent ones. For example I think that the EV3 parts I have modeled will be released by end of year. But some old parts such as this one can stay in limbo for a long time simply because nobody pulls them into the sight of reviewers and/or LDraw admin. Otherwise, to insure a good modeling quality, parts need to be reviewed OK by two different reviewers, then by LDraw admin (who keeps coherency in all this, preventing for exemple to release a part depending on an unapproved - thus unreleased - subpart). This can be a lengthy process, because we only have a handful of reviewers - Anybody's welcome BTW ;) That said, all unofficial parts can be downloaded here in one chunk (this archive is updated daily). Just do that from time to time (don't forget to keep your official library core updated too!), and you'll get all existing LDraw parts ;) -

Sure! http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cgi?f=parts/32333.dat - part is not yet official, but it should be so by the end of this year (it's already fully approved) -
Yes, train receiver is the same as Technic one (this explain why PF receiver is soooo studded!)A very interesting project, too bad my Nexus 7 doesn't have IR built in...

I agree with JM1971, a white background is best for those who want to print BIs. For what it is worth, here is the LPub setup used for EV3 bonus models BIs: 0 !LPUB CALLOUT INSTANCE_COUNT FONT GLOBAL "Arial,18,-1,5,75,0,0,0,0,0" 0 !LPUB PAGE DISPLAY_PAGE_NUMBER GLOBAL FALSE 0 !LPUB RESOLUTION GLOBAL 118 DPI 0 !LPUB PLI ANNOTATE FONT GLOBAL "Arial,18,-1,5,75,1,0,0,0,0" 0 !LPUB PLI ANNOTATE FONT_COLOR GLOBAL "#e50000" 0 !LPUB PLI INSTANCE_COUNT FONT GLOBAL "Arial,16,-1,5,75,0,0,0,0,0" 0 !LPUB PLI BACKGROUND GLOBAL COLOR "#cae8ff" 0 !LPUB PLI BORDER GLOBAL ROUND Black 0.02 15 MARGINS 0.05 0.05 0 !LPUB CALLOUT BORDER GLOBAL ROUND #aa0000 0.02 10 MARGINS 0.1 0.1 0 !LPUB CALLOUT BACKGROUND GLOBAL COLOR "#ffffc4" For the record, page size used in EV3 BIs is pretty weird (very wide and thin) to be able to be embedded in EV3 software used on wide screen. This model beeing wider than tall, I suggest a landscape orientation. -

Still a bit tricky to build and to properly show in BIs, but much better. I guess these BIs will not be for Technic builders newbies anyway ;) Build one from the stepped mpd before creating BIs... -

Overall it looks good (I'll try to have a closer look later). The thing that bothers me is the axle8 with stop (in the base at step 51 and 57) that need to be pushed through a lot of bushes - imho pretty hard to do and require a lot of force. OK, it's buildable, but I don't like this. PG52, do you have any hint about the building method you used there? -

Philo replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, I noticed that too. Actually I think that motor assembly can be separated from base and attached to it in a final step. Table support could then be merged with this motor assembly. -

Create true (= more usable than LDD ones!) building instructions! -

And as mentionned by DrJB, all movements must be driven by a single motor so that it is able to close loops. Using several motors and relying on relative speed variation (using PF or Mindstorms) would make it sensitive to battery level and friction differences in various sections of assembly. Otherwise... - What kind of pen do you use? felt tip? - Is there a good reason to tilt the pen instead of keeping it perpendicular to the paper? I should have listened to the comments in the video!!! - The turntables in version 5.2 are supposed to minimize shaking? - An idea for future improvement (take it with a grain of salt since I have not yet tried the spirograph!!!): What about a raising bar, fixed to the chassis, that would help raising and lowering the arms? the contact point between bar and arms would be in smooth area, allowing the arms to start their movement sliding on it. Hopefully that sould minimize shake at landing/take off... -

What I am looking for is a buildable sequence, not the way to display it... Can't figure out how to build this part without bending things! -

Here is base file, in current stepping state. I am somewhat stuck, I can't find a good building sequence for the last element I stepped (see comment in file for location). Any Idea? -

Here is the front gearbox module, which can be built separately from the base. There are steps in it, but things need to be reordered to make it buildable. I let this for the moment to another guy... Going on with the base! -

I have started to step the base. Fortunately parts remained properly grouped, so it should be (relatively!!!) easy... -

Can you post your MPD? -
I wouldn't indeed recommend to overvoltage the IR receivers. Even though it seems to work fine at first, lifespan of receiver could be reduced... For example V1 receiver motor driver (LB1836M) has a 10.5V absolute maximum rating! V2 driver gives a bit more leeway at 11.8 AMR. And we know nothing of IR receiver controller chip (LEGO custom) or surrounding capacitors.
