MOC: Whack A Jar Jar Binks
papacharly replied to dr_spock's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Extremely funny machine. It made me laugh. I especially like that it is completely unpredictable where Jar-Jar comes out next -
Brilliant implementation. Moreover very cute too. And many thanks for providing instructions!

Problem with LDraw?
papacharly replied to lego2lego's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I can confirm that: There is no way to make it match perfectly by using Sr3D or MLcad. But there is no need to worry about it: It is just the same offset as in real life. Right now I made a quick check. It's clear: In real life it is no problem to pull it a tiny bit to make it match. -

Confused, which program should I use?
papacharly replied to bemuser's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
If this is an important feature you may consider the actual database: [KEY TOPIC] Official Lego sets made in LDraw => 1927 sets [KEY TOPIC] Official LEGO Sets made in LDD => 4748 sets [KEY TOPIC] Eurobricks MOC LXF Index => a few hundred (?) So it seems that LDD builders are hard-working, while LDraw builders are quite a bit lazy. What I highly appreciate regarding LDraw is as follows: (1) For renders based on the LDraw system you can rely on the LGEO-library which provides nicely rounded edges for lots of parts (left: LDD/LDD2povray; right: LDraw/LDview/LGEO): (To whom it may concern: As I am not an experienced LDD or LDD2povray user the left render may be improvable regarding edges or bevels. If so, please let me know.) (2) LDraw is an open system: You have free access to the parts definition code. So you are able to manipulate existing parts or define your own custom parts. (3) LDraw is not restricted: You can apply any color to any part. E.g. you may generate a pink technic axle. In LDD you are restricted to color/part combinations which exists in real life. Or you can easily create airborne/floating parts in LDraw. (4) You can easily get in direct contact with the makers of LDraw. But (2) and (3) are, let’s say, “advanced features”. Not sure you ever wish to make use of it. Hope all this information is not too confusing and you will not decide for the “Dark side of the Force”. Regards Papacharly -

Millennium Falcon 75030 micro fighter build/destroy
papacharly replied to boomblocks's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Gents, there is no need to get upset! Cause this is art !!! It may be a kind of provoking art, but it is art. Maybe there is a serious message behind this video yet? I would highly appreciate if Boomblocks could tell us about his message. Unfortunately I haven’t understood it so far. Maybe it’s a revival of the medieval iconoclasm? Or maybe Boomblocks just feels like Pete Townshend or Kurt Cobain smashing their guitars? Boomblocks, please share your thoughts! Thanks and kind regards papacharly- 29 replies

Thank you all so much for your nice comments!!! As desired by TheLegoExpert here comes an mpd-file (MLCad/LDraw) of the Black Pearl: For a proper visual representation of all strings, ropes and railings you may have to install LSynth (Add-On to MLCad). Please note: The main ship consists of roundabout 3000 bricks. Whereas strings, ropes and railings add further 50.000 parts! As we prepared 4 custom parts you may additionally save following custom parts to your LDraw parts library: Modified Batarang (Stern) Modified Technic Plate (Anchor) Modified Mudguard (Bell) Endstud (Railing) As well as these two unofficial parts (available on ldraw.org too): # 64645 Boat Base 10x16 # 64651 Boat Base 13x16 Hope anything works fine and you will enjoy it! Regards Papacharly

POVRay gradient background?
papacharly replied to ___'s topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Hi, I just prepared some more detailed description of the images above. The background consists of 2 geometric shapes: a segment of cylinderringand a box. The box is not required as there usually is a floor instead. The following code works for povray files generated with LDview. For LDD2povray you may have to adapt it. So it should be easier to discuss it or to copy it. Additionally you may have to add some povray inc-files (e.g. for segment of cylindering shapes3.inc is required): #include "transforms.inc" #include "shapes.inc" #include "shapes3.inc" BTW: When I speak about "you" this always means "people" or "all povray users". Sorry, if there might have been some kind of misunderstanding. regards papacharly- 18 replies

POVRay gradient background?
papacharly replied to ___'s topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
What I usually do to get a smooth shaded background is just simulating the background real life photographers use. Unfortunately I have to admit that you need to have some povray skills for implementing such a background. But maybe Hrontos is such extremely excited now that he is willing to add this background feature to LDD2Povray so as to make it easy to use. Regards Papacharly- 18 replies

Lego Philae Lander National Space Centre

Great model. And very accurate too (as far as I can tell). So your philae mission is accomplished succesfully! papacharly -
Good news: We will provide an mpd file. But you have to be patient. It will need some time as actually there is no LDraw or MPD file containing all components. I have to prepare it. For manageability I prepared a lot of ldraw files: One for the main ship, a lot of files for strings, ropes and railings, and so on. Then I converted each single ldraw file to povray and “assembled” all files in povray (via inc-files) to generate the complete model. If it seems necessary to you, please feel free to give me a reminder … Your kind comments are highly appreciated. Glad you like it. Many thanks!! Courleciel & Papacharly

LDD/MLCad 15D The Black Pearl Project - A joint venture by Courleciel and Papacharly EDIT April 1st 2015: Black Pearl mpd-file is available now. Please also note the relevant post #15 below! End of last year I had been invited by Courleciel to join a project he already started. The goal of this project was to virtually build the Black Pearl from the Lego video game “Pirates of the Caribbean” and, in a second step, to “make great renderings”. At this time the ship had already been built by Courleciel in real bricks. Starting point for this project was an “old” lxf-file (Lego Digital Designer) by captainjack. The virtual model was significantly optimized by Courleciel so as to make it more accurate and complete. A lot of parts have been repainted, some new elements were added (such as anchors, bell, grating, cannons...), and some were adjusted or rebuilt (like the capstan, figurehead, lanterns, masts...). After the model was nearly completed, the LDD file was converted to the LDraw format and my job started. According to Courleciels conceptual work I added rigging, rails, ropes and strings by using SR3D Builder and MLCad/LSynth. Sails were directly created in povray. Additionally it was necessary to manipulate some original LDraw parts (e.g. # x1609 batarang, see stern) to make them authentic with regard to the video game. Finally we decided on all setups for being rendered. All renders have status “as rendered”. There was no “photoshopping” applied, aside from scaling down and anti-aliasing. I have not counted all the hours I spent working on this project. But doing all the work Courleciel and me had a lot of fun. So we hope that you also will enjoy our work and have some fun too. High resolution “technical renders” showing the conceptual work of Courleciel can be found here. For high resolution images of the movie scenes click here. And here is the outcome of our project:: First we have some technical renders of the Black Pearl. Then we show some movie scene remakes. For all those which are not familiar with “Pirates of the Carribean”, please find the original movie scene respectively an original video game screenshot below each rendering. Here comes a remake of a video game screenshot: Two movie scenes from part 1 "The Curse of the Black Pearl": Movie scene “Pantano River” from part 2 "Dead Man’s Chest" Two movie scenes “Locker” from part 3 "At World’s End" Last but not least we have an atmospheric and maybe kitschy sunset render which is not related to any movie scene.

POV Ray Problem
papacharly replied to Jarema's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
The rotate operation has to be part of the object defintion. You just have to move the bracket: //// ModelObject 3741c01.dat object { _3741c01_dot_dat material { L3Color15 } rotate <20.000000, 0, 0> rotate <0, -45.000000, 0> rotate <0, 0, 0.000000> } -
Hallo Herr Kolonialbeamter, more or less I have no experience in using LDD as I prefer the LDraw system. But I think I am familiar with povray. So please find here some sort of instructions showing how to merge two pov-files generated by ldd2povray. I made a simple test and it worked well. At least for only a couple of bricks…. If I understood your post in the right way you already ensured that there will be no part collision in the merged render? So each part of the first LDD-file has to have a position which is different to any other parts position of the second file. Please let me know how things are going on. Glad when I can help. Regards Papacharly
