Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Don't know if this interview with Jamie was missed from last month but it has a whole load of photos of Anderson's WIP Jazz club designs. Whilst I do wish we'd gotten a huge sax sign, I think the final version of the JC was the best iteration. I love the facade of the yellow building in some of his sketches, and am glad he didn't go with sand green. https://brickarchitect.com/2023/interview-backstage-tour-of-10312-jazz-club-with-jamie-berard/ upload free image

I used the chrome gold trumpet 71342. It’s what’s pictured in the poster on the front of the JC. It does stand out against the pearl gold sax etc but I’m sure ‘head cannon’ can find a solution! Oh its 100% Andy Sax in assembly Square. Same hairpiece, same classic smiley, same shirt collar etc. With luck there may be more music based figures and accessories coming down the line like the formerly Vidiyo cello/double bass that was meant for series 3 of that line.

I respectfully couldn't disagree more with this. As a Jazz fan who regularly goes to gigs and makes travel plans around jazz bars when I travel abroad I am confident that one would struggle to find any example of this in the 'real world'. Neon signs that attach to a mounting (i.e not freestanding or mounted to a brick wall) are generally either black or mirrored or transparent perspex. And in the examples below of some of my favourites, all match the colour scheme of the building. In London we have the famous Ronnie Scott's, Jazz @ Pizza Express in Paris; Le Caveau de la Huchette, In Detroit; Bakers Keyboard Lounge, in Chicago; Green Mill Cocktail Lounge

Here you go, I'm not sure if this is what you meant. It looks a bit like a converted police station to me.

Totally! when I first saw the leaks I thought that the sign was the problem, the issue that the bottom fascia of the club ought to be dark blue. Luckily it's not more than a handful of pieces! Meanwhile, my alterations for the restaurant are coming together, here's my WIP... I can't quite get the colonnade with balcony looking aesthetically pleasing yet Any thoughts appreciated... Other changes are not too substantial, ; added an extra floor, (which immediately improved the silhouette) Made the roof more 'Tuscan' looking. Green shutters which are a must on many of this style of building- i'm not entirely satisfied with my solution at the moment. Added Grape vines, though I need to make these a bit more organic looking IMO. As you can tell, i've not shied away from the fact that this restaurant is Friends-style. It's an exact colour match for 41379. (I'll probably use the sticker sign from that set and call this restaurant "La Locanda"

I totally agree, The sign being dark blue makes no sense with the rest of the palette, makes you think that perhaps this printed tile piece went into production before they switched the colours. If they had just made the tile black in the first place, it would have been more seemless with the rest of the palette regardless. Ah well, I do love the building at the end of the day, I just wish it could have been a bit less 'safe', and had some more interesting build techniques. The aspect of the hobby I enjoy the most is modding official designs, I don't have a modular that I've not spend the extra £££ on to modify. It makes it a lot more fun when the original building has some design flare rather than being as simple as the JC, but I've had fun with the interior in making room for the piano/ trumpet player etc. On a positive note, as we speak, the 2024 modular is already being finished up, and the design team will likely be aware of the many mixed reviews the JC has received and hopefully it'll take some bigger risks despite not being a corner plot. The 'icons' design team are well aware of the often requested business' like post-office/ Hospital etc and they did give us the PS in the end, so perhaps there's some momentum to give the fans what they want rather than slightly less requested things like a pointlessly tiny bookshop with no books...

Hi pals, In case people were pondering dark blue as the facade to match the signage... I think it looks nice in blue, perhaps mores than black which is the direction I went in.

They aren’t, but I would tend to tile all interiors anyway. One could use a mix of red tiles and plates if you still wanted that colour I guess.

A silly diversion for a moment… What day of the week is it on modular street? Hear me out: If everything is happening concurrently along the 17 buildings, (according to Jamie, so I guess that’s lore) and we know that Andy Sax is NOT playing at the jazz club tonight, then it’s not Friday night, as that’s when he is due to play. The dentists office is open so it’s probably not the weekend, and I’d double down on it not being a Sunday as the tiny independent bookshop and pet store isn’t likely to open on a Sunday. The bank certainly wouldn’t open at the weekend. Any other clues along the street? Time of year? Most trees are green, and full with the exception of the beech, so I would argue that we are early autumn or late summer. Especially as the Andy sax poster says he’s due to play on the 12th October. Never the 10th of December as some were convinced of.(Lego use the European date system). unless the street is now SO long that it has its own microclimate.😂

They look great on the black base, amazing that you had so much black and grey to make them look consistent and clean. Great use of the Tardis and Delorean. Would you be tempted to use some trans orange energy fire pieces coming out the back for the flame trails? I think you are right about these being cheaper from PAB rather than BL, so long as you are buying enough from Lego to get free shipping. They are not a bestseller part though so in the UK not currently listed on the PAB. I hope the full pan selection comes back online soon.

I thoroughly recommend this part, it’s been expensive but hugely worthwhile transitioning all my Modular’s and MOCS to this system. The black base gives them all a nice ‘framed’ aesthetic and, if like me your builds are on high shelves you can you can pick a heavy modular up with two fingers and know it’ll be solid as a rock. I know some people MILS to hide lighting system wires, I’ve not done that myself and I discovered this approach when moving house, or just rearranging the street and wanting a reliable way to handle buildings without the 😰 I doubt I’m the first one to come up with this, but I’ve not seen this online anywhere else so far. I call it ‘fast food mils’ 😉 I use a couple of technic pins to connect them together and then just pop the grid of 2 or 4 onto an old-school base plate and bobs your uncle! I honestly think that it’s (possibly) cheaper and more convenient than the traditional brick and plate MILS approach. It’s certainly faster, takes about 15 seconds and just looks consistent and clean.

Yeah, a bit tricky, possibly best to buy a second one if one wanted to have a symmetrical frontage. I think looking for asymmetry may produce something more interesting. id like to see your mod once done. In the meantime, just managed to fit in a small bar and a fuller band, with… trumpet player. tiny image host excuse the crappy pics, it’s hard getting a phone inside!

Thanks very much! That sticker is great, didn't notice that when it came out. The more I stare at it the mod in person the more I think that perhaps I ought to try bringing in some of the stained glass look from the upper floors to tie both together. Something like this orientation possibly. I have lots of these printed glass pieces so it might be a good place for them...
