BrickTracks: R104 Switch Kickstarter is LIVE!

I think it's a lost cause ! I can't found a system that meet all the requirements : I bought Sbricks because it's so well designed and very compact and reliable. And you can either use a PS4 joystick ! control it ! I loved 12V because there was so many functions, but too many wires. 9V allow to get rid of batteries and LiPo (I bought LiPo PF but it's not the solution). You can have a Xmas train running all the day long without problem DCC is very convenient to control switches and large layouts. There is nothing better to control motors, even brushless motors and maintain very low speeds whatever the load is. And you can find so many tutos or DIY electronic, for instance, you can already find very cheap "keep alive" add-ons that allow you to run on dirty or plastic track sections. I'm not found of PowerUp It's compact but too much expensive and not versatile enough. I need more than 2 plugs. But it may offer better in a near future. So, IMO, the solution is an OPEN Hybrid modular standard that allow to interoperate 12V 9V, PF PUP as you won't force every Trainfan to adopt a given standard and Lego will go on with new standards We need power pick-up. I did mine on their own with Bachmann 31 mm garden train wheels (or LGB 67419) like these, with shortened axles (each wheel has an half plastic axle tha tgoes ont the metal axle), but I would prefer a ready to use solution with smaller wheels. . We need a device to lower (and rectify) voltage to allow user to interoperate on 18V AC (DCC) 12V and 9V We need a keep alive device for non PF to run over PF sections. We need curves, switches, crossovers, double slip points, dual gauges, spoked wheels, etc... And of course we need a versatile plug. The PF plug was a good one. A more reliable and less bulky coupler interoperable with Lego coupler is still to be invent.

BrickTracks: R104 Switch Kickstarter is LIVE!

As a 9V (DCC) user, I have no use of plastic only tracks. I have no use either of such big points. I do print my own tracks. The quality is quite good as long as printing resolution is high (not the choice of Trix/4D &Co), a bit less shiny than Lego ones. However, 3D printed have weaknesses under stress molded pieces don't have. 3D printing is good for prototypes or very short series. I'm not fan of PDQ 3D printed tracks sold here and there. It seems they just want to make money. I have been a happy customer of BBBricks and could not imagine I would be so disappointed by Me Models products (odd metal tracks and badly-designed plastic tracks). BrickTracks products seem to raise the level and I hope they will succeed as far as possible. That's why I support it for 2 left and 2 right points. I think our hobby need it.

    2018 Lego Trains

A new system is not bad as long as we keep some backward compatibility. The main drawback between 9V System, PF, Mindstorm and Boost is that each has its own plug format and they cannot interoperate. Who can still find 9V to PF plug extension cord ? In the same way, Lego coud change stud dimensions every 5/7 years If the new system just offers blutooth and a short-lived phone app, I then think I will keep buying Sbricks. It works quite well, is very compact and affordable and doesn't need to change all my electric devices. As for radii and MILS, AFOLs (/ third parties) could also maintain an open standard to keep some interoparability between Lego successive waves of hesitation (just remember the blocky 2006 train base with IR and battery reveiver)

    BrickTracks: different curves, PF/9V compatible

R56 in PF (and 9V) is definitely my priority ! 9v straight would rank 2nd. But 9v Straights are not that expensive : 8 x 9V straights is about 30 EUR on aftermarket. So 9v straight should be very competitive as European customers will also have to pay for more shipping fees and add 20% to 25% of custom taxes. PF straight with copper/inox tape is still a very easy and affordable workaround especially on straights. As for points, we do not need so many. I do not like 4Dbrix (and TrixBrix) switch geometry. Their solutions are not enough flexible and I won't buy and store a single-purpose switches. A swich must be very versatile to meet the market. I do have more tha 20 9V and PF switches. But even if R104 switches were very cheap, I would not buy more than a couple of each, for exhibition or outdoor use. for instance, For instance, for a ladder, tracks on a drawer would be more room efficient especially for longer trains.
  9. For your investigation, you may have forget 3d files on Thingiverse, pictures of afol that cut and stick old lego points on brickshelf, etc.. It takes a very long time to design, print, test, correct, improve print and finally publish. I find it too easy for others to slander and they deserve the first rank for stupidity Working on patent and IP is a serious profession, you know. For your records, I'm working (on my own and for friends only) on this for months. I mean the industrial track, not the provencale tablecloth. I've also designed a 3XL wheel (49,6 mm blind) for a german S2/6, mast for catenary, etc.. And for those IP ayatollahs who blam and accuse without knowing, I got inspiration from Maerklin and Tillg models for the design. I don't know if others have done similar things
  10. I do agree that taxes (and sometime national lobbies) don't help, but it can't explain the great part of the mess about prices. Like Amazon in Europe, most of Web vendors are fiscally located in Ireland and pay all of their taxes there. That's the way they legally escape local taxes. So why is Lego shop cheaper for Germany delivery than for France ? Why is this often the contrary (for Lego sets) on Amazon ? 3 of the 4 toy shops in my shopping district display the same price grid for Lego set. The fourth one is a Belgian franchise : bigger sets are often much more expensive as smaller set are often cheaper, sometimes up to 25%. You may find there themes that comes not out in France, or find them earlier. And exceptionally, you may find limited set restricted to another network. It's obvious their supply chain comes from abroad. Taxes and regulations do not vary with size of sets, themes, playmobil release date (news are released 6 month earlier in Germany), etc. But Lego prices difference between countries do. And the cheaper is not always the same place ... Juste realize that, for instance, set 10232 is 7% cheaper in The Galerie Lafayette Haussman, THE very big department store in THE very centre of Paris where local, national taxes, excise duties, rent ... everything is higher than anywhere in France (and even in the World according to you) than Legoshop @home a web seller without go-between and with minimum taxes ... That's so frustating and irritating to find next door the same set you bought 25% more. Who want to buy Lego Tower Bridge 10214 EUR 219.99 when it's on shelves for a year at EUR 169.99 in my local toy shop (a brick and mortar toy shop with employee, taxes, rent..) ? As far I'm concerned, I don' care. The funny thing is that is sometimes cheaper to (re)import even with USPS shipping fee (~50/60 $), VAT (+19,6% on value including shipping) and customs tax perception fee (~26 $) added. This is less a problem of high price but more a feeling of inequitable differences. Big price differences on the same set noticed in a short period of time within a finally small area tend to show inconsistencies in prices and develop the feeling of being outsmarted, duped. Say that, it won't ruin my enjoyment of buildind more and more with my Lego bricks !

    Classic Space Restoration Project

Great job, Rufus. I'm really moved as I got it for Christmas '79 ... That a great set of the Lost World. If only TLG would reissue all the first wave. Play it again, Sam
  13. Hope you are kidding ? If I were you, I you would start a petition to get prices on the Official Online Legostore up to 30% higher for people, say, from Montana (compared with prices for those from New Jersey). Those difference between states you listed above are as high in the US as in the European Union. That would be great fun ... as for us in this old Europe. I don't think Lego prices have a lot to do with costs. Those box I once ordered on Legoshop where produced in China, Hungary, etc.. (sometimes Denmark, probably the price sticker) shipped to a big warehouse somewhere among the Vikings and then delivered by a Romanian driver in a Polish truck. I don't think cost's would have been different if he (the romanian driver) had to deliver in Germany (just turn left instead of right on the Rhine river highway). I think It's more a question of competition (Lego and Playmobil new themes - even colors used - are the same at same time, even the same rotten ideas) and consumer ability to pay more or (un)ability to compare prices. What a stupid consumer strategy ! I live in France, in the east, the country that we called "of the three borders" (Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany). And there, it's worth taking you car to go shopping accross the border, not only for beers (go to Germany for long-drink beers, to Belgium for strong flavored ones, to France if you want to spend a lot for chemical ones and then leave what you haven't spent on an bank account in Luxemburg to avoid most of European taxes - I'm joking). It is worth also for Lego, as long as you intend to buy a big set. [i could there also speak about anticipated and limited series, themes that are not issued in a country, etc...] Not so long after Lego gave up wood for ABS, those guys from North America brought us the Internet as researcher from CERN invented the Web. So now it much more easier. It takes no longer than a couple of minute to find the desired set up to 30% less, shipping fee included (more and more cheap within western Europe). And even for smaller set, you may sometimes take part in a "bulk" order. The fact is marketers only achieved to destroy the value of Lego set perceived by old regular customer. I now consider Official Lego Prices as the limit to never reach, the prices for desperate consumers, incurable lego-addict, aliens that never taste of our consumer society... Even in Paris' Galerie Lafayette - one of the best Lego shop in Paris, even best as the official Lego Shop (if you dare find it), also known as the self-proclaimed temple of fashion - but especially sanctuary of high prices for tourists still amazed by the French capital city... Even there, you will be able to buy Palace Cinema (10132) 7% less than on Lego Shame Online. With this survey we now know that the sleeper has his eyes wide opened. May be he would - endlich - realize that there is definitely something rotten in the (brick) kingdom of Denmark. It's time to take AFOL for what they are : Adults.
  14. Neptune carrier A big red vacuum cleaner in the depths of Atlantis Set #8075 Theme: Atlantis Year Released: since December 2009 (2010 officially) Piece Count: 493 (19 extras) New parts : Red tile 1 x 3 (x3) and Dark bley brick 1 x 1 with stud on one side (x8) Printed parts : minifigs legs and torsos, slope 45° 2 x 2 decorated with knobs and screens (x2) Minifigs: 4, 3 divers and 1 manta warrior List Price: EUR 64.99 (Amazon sells it for EUR 55.80 .. what’s wrong with Lego prices ?) January sets are on shelves ! I planned to buy more #3177 but it was already out of stock when I returned to my toy store. As my daughters are found of sets with things that you can hang, hide, etc… I decided to come back with another Atlantis set. The box It’s one of the biggest. Compare it to other Atlantis theme. Same size as Winter Toy Shop. Already well-known front. Back displays as usual extra functions supposed to add some fun to the set : flick-fire missiles with lime round brick (4), trapdoors with tools on one side and spear guns on the other side, an aquatic scooter that I would call subbike, the car that you can park on the lower deck of the carrier. I must admit that the angle of view is great as all that you can see on this picture is what you get … and nothing more. I could stop my review here in fact. Top shows the minifigs included That’s the kind of box I like : it’s easy to open (just cut the seals, nothing to punch with your thumbs), easy to reuse for storage and easy to flatten. This is a big set. The manual is divided into 2 booklets, and use piece call-out. Of course, you get an USS (useless sticker sheet), mainly intended to decorate the crappy technic panels. 4 numbered bags that YOU SHALL NOT MIX TOGETHER, manual says (but no fine yet if you do). Some loose parts : tipper drum halves in red and a trans bright green windshield. As usual, just shake the box before opening and you will get a real mess ! USS and Instructions Stickershit First page with tables of the laws. Random page Last 3 pages. Atlantis theme sets. Sets in action. For those with webcam, internet acces and time to waste and who like virtual and fashionable things. The last and the most interesting. The inventory. It’s mainly dark bley and red. Bag 1 Let’s open bag 1. Two smaller bags in it. The building begins with minifigs, and then the subbike, the car and ends with the black manta. Let’s open a bracket for minifigs This minifig is my preferred one. He looks as a tough guy, a real adventurer, not an altar boy. He looks great in his diver suit ! He’s depicted as the biker, hung on the rear of the carrier on the front picture. This one seems to be the brain of the crew. He’s the pilot of the carrier. He’s great too. This one is the novice, the trainee. The young one that only look for racing on the bottom of the sea. And now, new propaganda from Copenhagen. Stop polluting the seas otherwise you will turn to this ! It does not feel in great health. TLG issued a new headgeartant wouldn’t be easy to reuse in other themes. It’s made of soft stuff like rubber and can be easily bent. Manta warrior in full suit. How Schrecklich ! In fact he is ! There are 3 divres against only one manta warrior … but only divers can be frightened. Oups ! I forgot to speak about the ring. It’s green painted with gold with a manta pattern. Done ! Here we are at the end of the building. 7 extra pieces on the right. The sub bike. Very smooth and simple design The car. Nice and impressive … … with a real car base ! and very few pieces in fact. The black manta has a very classic but efficient design, with smart reuse of car pieces. The belly Bag 2 Two smaller bags in bag 2. Only red, black and dark bley parts to build the core of the carrier. Lime round plates are hidden behind the hinges. You may see both decorated slope on this picture. The white one above and the black one below. 3 extra pieces on the right. The top of the lower deck is smartly built with hinge plates. The correct angle is obtained thanks to black door rails plates. But it’s time to open booklet 2 Bag 3 Only one smaller bag in bag 3, (but who cares ?). Only red, black and dark bley parts to build the lower deck of the carrier. You may see these 1 x 10 curved slopes in red. And when attached to the former step … (5 extra pieces on the foreground) Close-up It’s time to open bag 4. Bag 4 Two smaller (aso) … The pearl gold curved brick is hidden under the front hood … Lego is emptying some Indy stocks ! and tipper drum parts Trapdoor made with this ugly crappy cheapplastic-looking technic panels. You’ve got tools on the left hand side. To leave them there is the better way to lose them as they are not firmly held. That’s not the case for spear guns on the right and side. At last, it does not look so bad. (4 extra pieces) Side view Front view. It reminds me of some star wars ship … I like the design very much. That kind of big mouth with a slim nose With vehicles and figs New pieces 3 tiles 1 x 3, design number 63864 8 bricks with stud on one side, design number 87087 Global appreciation The carrier is well designed, not too big, not too heavy. You don’t have to be “big-handed” to take it and the building is strong enough for several take off and landing from the air. The way the large propeller is held is not the best as it tends to move round his vertical axis. A second manta warrior would have been great for playability. TLG is a bit stingy for a set of that size. In 2010, this set will be probably found between 45 and 65 EUR. In the same time a manta warrior would be sold for 2.65 to 3.5 EUR as an impulse … It's going to be cheaper to buy parts separatly ! (Most of 8075's parts are very common Most of pieces can be reuse. Only technic panels are a bit useless and tipper drum parts for those who don’t have a city. Red is dead. I have so many red bricks that I don’t know how to use them. May be I should build a giant Chinese flag … Every time I see a set with a lot of red bricks, I hesitate to order only those I lack of. The main flaw is the price. It’s not expensive … it completely overpriced, it’s thief. For the same price, I ordered on BL 6441 Deep Reef Refuge a 12years old collector item full of exclusive parts. And it was not produce by cheap workforce at that time (8075 is made in Denmark – I wonder what and for how long – China, Hungary and Czech R). So, happy Xmas TLG, that was my donation for this year ! There is (still) something rotten in the Kingdom of Denmark Just look what happen to Atlantis !

    LEGO Friends on shelves

Guess who I met last Sunday at my local shop ? Her names is Stephanie. She's a little taller than regular minifig. Same picture, bigger Sets on shelves looked too attractive to say No. My daughter picked one of the smallest, #3930. No stickers ! What a good news ... The sunshade piece and the 1 x 1 milk brick are printed. Nice colors too. Here it is in real world : It seems there are new pets (birds, dogs, etc.) No doubt we'll soon buy another one (The big house was around EUR 75). Is it what you mean ? Her hair fits perfectly on a regular minifig. Bit not for heads as friends'head have a thinner neck. A closer view on the fig. Bad news : soft plastic, same that make octopus legs (Atlantis line) As you may see, it's not as shiny as "regular" hair pieces. No discrimination please ! Blond hair are not exclusively dedicated to women ... My peasant match more with our times like that. Actually, I'm off today. I won't be able to show it before to morrow.

    REVIEW: 3177 City Runabouts

INDEXED City Runabouts City - World's going warmer ! it's time to get a smaller car Set #3177 Theme: City Year Released: 2009 (2010 officially) Piece Count: 45 (2 extras) - No new part except printed torso Minifigs: 1 List Price: EUR 4.99 The flu is back outside, Saint-Nicolas has gone and it's snowing for the first time this winter (it's usually at the beginning of november). A great day for a review ! May be our crisis hit Legoland world ? As for real world, Lego Car Designers followed the market by issuing a pied Smart. The box is hardly bigger than a child hand. You got twice the same picture on the front and on the right hand side, and a picture of what seems to be a new torso (a sweater) on the top of the box. Only hieroglyphs on the other sides. The box is however as void as usual. Here is the content : Good news ! No sticker ... God bless (danish) gods. The view with a random page will close the chapter on the booklet : Lego warehouse must be full of green 1 x 2 plates ! You may notice four of them hidden in the design of the car ... There is something odd with the minifig. At first sight, I would have said this guy was a jogger. But he wears no cap, and he took a suitcase ? ?? Moreover, it's a long time I haven't seen somebody with green pants. Danish fashion ? His back is printed too. The car is a single seater, 8 x 4, has no seat, no side and rear windows, no ESP I guess and only a big rear stop light just under the roof. We get a white cheesecake and a round transclear plate as extra parts (top of the picture). Comfortable is not a word I'd would use for that car. The driver can't lean backward as his head hit the back light and it's difficult to get in the car as the doorway is very high : I think it's only worth for city life, traffic jams and car parks (I 've never seen any Car pack in Lego city for decades so it's must be a big issue for dwellers). Just check where they put the engine before leaving for a long journey ! This set is cheap but not so cost effective with a ratio of 0.11 (price over parts #) but it's a very cheap way to get : - a nice double-sided torso, - a not so common trans black windshield - a good base to fill your city with playable not oversized vehicules Have fun
  18. Set #8078 Theme: Atlantis Year Released: since December 2010 Piece Count: a lot Minifigs: 6+, 3 divers, the guardian of the gate , octopus and shark warriors and an old-fashioned skeleton List Price: too much, 95 EUR I had to go to Paris last wednesday to attend a meeting. I take advantage of noon time to pop into the only shop in France dedicated to Lego. What a surprise ! The shop was full of freshly delivered new sets : cars, space police, atlantis, prince of persia, trains, etc. 5 hours laters, most of it has been sold ! I must admit that I bought this box for the minifigs, but I like the overall design much better than in set with the squid (8061) The box Though there is no light in this set, the picture on the cover highlights the color palette used for the set (black, gold, dark red) with rays of light coming from the gate. The treasure chest is hidden by the guardian. As the box is quite big, you can't miss it in a shop. The biggest set in the line. It has in fact the same size as that for the fire brigade. It measures 54.5 x 47.5 x 8.5 (in cm). As usual, the back shows some of the functions : The gate can be open by turning the wheel (this tile, it works with gears). The mouth of the shark can close the lower stairs ... rather useless as you can swim around ! Minifigs shoot on the top. Content The box can be open properly by cutting two seals on the side. I like the fact that this kind of box can be easily flattened and stored without any damage. Two booklets inside - could have been only one as they are rather slim : I don't mind paying about 90 EUR and getting only one booklet - , a shameful sticker sheet, 9 numbered bags from 1 to ... 9. Instructions : cover Random page Last pages with 2010 sets 8077 "Exploration Headquarters" 8076 "Deep Sea Striker" Inventory, and here, the same with a bigger size Sticker sheet : patterns for shark noses Building bag 1 Not so many thing to do : minifigs and sharks and a bit repetitive (you have to build twice the same shark) 3 smaller bags in bag #1 What you get. 5 extra parts. Side view of a shark. The design is a little bit different than usual. The head is build upside down. The design is not bad BUT Quality issues again ! I got trouble to put these smooth teeth in hollow studs. 3 out of 8 were too thick to fit. And when you try, the material peel off (See pictures) ! That's a shame ... I'm fed up to call the customer service and to hear the same tune : "That's so odd that you encounter so many problems, M XX !" May be I'm a too good client ! Minifigs 6 and the remains of an aquaraider : The ancestor : Nostalgia, nostalgia ! A real old fashioned skeleton with loose arms. Notice the helmet with aquaraider pattern ! I don't remember that female could apply for that job last year. Times had changed. Girl power is on in minifig world Deepwaterproof make up. Notice the fly on the chin and the harpoon in the hand. Hey deep sea creatures, Kiss or Kill ? Gatekeeper : No words in my mouth (keyboard, in fact). It's better than what you can see. Just look and salivate His legs and torso are printed, the latter on both sides. Look at his face ... too much thalassotherapy is not good for health Greatest parts of the set (of the year - hey, you should make a poll on that) : Helmet and armor (pauldron ?) Front / back Oups ! It's dawn and I have to go to work. Let's open bag 2 later ______________________________________________________________________________ The building is divided into 8 parts, one bag for each. It takes approximately 15 mn for each part. You add no more than 5/6 pieces per step, and building instructions are very clear with no color problem between black and dark bley. You also don't have to finished bag 9 to start playing. Each bag leads to something playable. Hence, it's really a child's play. Bag 2 The main entrance and the main staircase. Some technic parts (links and towball) to move the lower jaw Completed. No extra parts. Bag 3 The upper jaw and staircase. A boat bow brick and some rounded slopes Completed. You may notice use of SNOT for the jaws. 3 extra parts Just lift the upper jaw to open the gate ! Bag 4 Apartements : room and office. The gate is inhabited. Belville arches Don't know if it's a new map. Who knows ? Completed. The lower part seems to be a bed. 1 extra part Bag 5 The upper floor, the gate and its mechanism to close this kind of diaphragm. Nices colors : transparent blue inverted slopes, transparent light blue tiles, pearl gold rounded slopes, etc... Here it is. 3 extra parts. Pinned with the main staircase. The gate closed and opened, revealing a gold treasure chest. Can somebody explain TLG that people moves in three dimensions in water ... Bag 6 The gate on the left hand side, groundfloor Parts Build. 3 extra parts. Bag 7 The gate on the left hand side, first floor Parts Build. 2 extra parts. Gates put toghether I can't add more images in this post ... Go there for the end

    [Review] 7953 - Jester

Jester Even better than the former one ! Set #7956 Theme: Kingdom Year Released: 2010 Piece Count: 25 New parts : Minifig torso and hat ! Printed parts : minifig torso and head (both sides) Minifig: 1 Price: Impulse price, between EUR 2.49 and 4.00 Bought last Wednesday in Paris. The box It’s a standard colourful Impulse set box. A nice picture of jester in action. I like the new Kingdom logo very much .. It'll surely be a hit. Nothing of interest on the top ... Nor on the back. Content Bag and instruction sheet The hat is packed in a separate bag, inside the main bag : Minifig Very good looking and well printed with its crowned belt. Both torso and head are printed on both sides. Great ! And with two flags and some slopes, this set is a real bargain to add some fun on your medieval market place ! TLG give us here an early Xmas !
  21. The ugly and nasty alien of our dreams ? The bad ones are always the aliens Last seen in set #5983, but can be encountered in set 5984 and 5985 Universe: Space Police Year of birth: 2010 Status : WANTED TLG release 3 new aliens this season : You'll have to spend a lot and buy sets #5984 and 5985 to catch them all. Set 5983 (front, back, top) will provide you only the most common one but for a minimal donation to TLG. Let us get acquainted with sir escapee ! He has a very big mouth, so big that he can unfasten his belt with its chin ! A close up of his face shows us that his head is made in two parts sticked together. In fact, it's barely noticeable. I wonder how this guy manage to sleep on his back, and how he managed to dress. Even his back is threatening ! The head itself is a big, hard and heavy part. I'm not sure if it's the first time but we get a jail suit with this minifig : And for our pleasure, it's printed on both side ! It's a great minifig for any AFOL No doubt that it will soon sit in my Mos Eisley cantina ... Enjoy

Gates put toghether Bag 9 The gate on the right hand side, upper floor. Like bag 7. Build. 2 extra parts. Both pictures shows that some slopes shine as other don't. The 4 x 3 30° slope on the right looks badly molded with an irregular surface May be there is a link with that ? Building completed With minifigs added. Other views I think it's a great set. It's current price is too high but I think it will soon drop. The color scheme (dark red, dark tan, black and pearl gold) is wonderful. I HATE these red and grey underwater vehicules There are 6 minifig + one old-style skeleton. The gatekeeper is great and its speckle black-gold armor and helmet are particularly amazing. The overall design is great, the diaphragm is a good find and the building is pleasant.
