MOC: LDD Modular Platform design

Recommended Posts

With my recent purchase of 2 x HEs, it quickly becomes apparent that the stations like 7937 are a little short :look:

which got me thinking about modular platforms. Here are my first two that I'm happy with:

First up, a side platform, which can incorporate buildings / stairs etc...

8385512117_8370606e66_d.jpg

and secondly, an island style platform.

8385512071_15a8ccfb0c_d.jpg

The island fits in the 8 stud gap between two tracks. The clearance in wide enough for a HE, but I think will need adjusting to fit an Emerald (I don't have one at the mo to test :cry_sad: )

The height is 2 & 2/3 bricks, which seems to be the norm.

Any thoughts ?

A really simple and elegant solution CamelBoy68. I'm dying to start working with lego trains  and this gives me some inspiration to get on with it!

Those platforms look great!

Nice creation.

I see you used a lot of small plates to reproduce tiles layout.

I'd like to create some of them, but I think that they could costs too much with all those pieces.

Perhaps you could simplify it to decrease parts and price.

Hi robt,

there are not as many tiles as you think.... :classic:

The only tiles used are

5x (2 x 2) in light bluish grey (which can be removed for attaching structures etc)

6x (2 x 2) in black, giving support underneath the platform

4x (1 x 4) in white along the edge

All the rest are 2 x 4 or 1 x 2 bricks

here's an exploded view of the island platform.

That exploded view makes a lot more sense. It's a very effective design you've got going on there.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks CB68.

Could you please post the inventory list?

I'd like to check how much it could cost on BL.

For the Island platform the parts are:

8 x 2431 (Tile 1 x 4) in White

6 x 3001 (Brick 2 x 4) in Light Bluish Gray

4 x 3004 (Brick 1 x 2) in Light Bluish Gray

2 x 3036 (Plate 6 x 8) in Black

6 x 3068b (Tile 2 x 2 with Groove) in Black

8 x 3068b (Tile 2 x 2 with Groove) in Light Bluish Gray

1 x 4282 (Plate 2 x 16) in Black

2 x 4282 (Plate 2 x 16) in Light Bluish Gray

Cost on BL (Uk Stores with Highest Qty) is roughly £6.58 (excl delivery & track... )

Obviously you could exchange some of the longer pieces 2 x 16 and make them 2x (2 x 8) and the same with the base plates 6 x 8 in black - as I imagine that it wouldn't matter what color it is as it will be obscured by the layout.

These are nice, I like how you have incorporated the prototypical yellow line that we have on platforms in the UK. Are these used elsewhere, I can't remember from my travels if I have seen them or not!

They are used in Italy too.

Nice design for a platform there. I have mine incorporated onto a baseplate that covers two tracks but they are modular so that extra bits can be incorporated if needed. I have done the same with the goods yard I am building.

Perhaps ramps will prove to be more of a challenge?

At first they were, but then I had a flash of inspiration... :classic:

Thanks for all the great comments, much appreciated :classic:

and now the next stage in development - footbridge/stairs

Again, using the same platform segments, I have incorporated some stairs:

Island Platform

and joined them with a footbridge.

The bridge could be extended to another island and/or side platform for bigger layouts.

PS. Australia has the yellow lines in many stations too

only thing i say would be needs hand rails and looks a little to steap for the steps.

But loving the platforms keen to put the idea in my bin of stuff to add to layout.
