[Cor Jan FB2] ETTC - The Sacred Bean: Prelude

Recommended Posts

Jennifer Cartwright graduated from the University of Belson in 617 with a degree in Botany. She had studied diligently along the academic path approved by her family and Corlander society and while she gained some certain satisfaction from the study of plants; she longed for for a more commercial path. Her friends would often tease her that there must surely be Eslandolan blood somewhere in her ancestry!

Situated in the student district outside the huge university was a small establishment run by some Corlanders of Mokolei descent. Their specialisation was a hot drink, thick and bitter in taste, made from a product specially imported from the Southern Mokolei satrapies. Different from the Cocoa drink recently introduced from Cocovia, this drink was called coffee and while not unknown on the Madrice Peninsula, it was not common either. The botanist in her was fascinated with the 'beans' that produced this addictive beverage, while her dormant commercial instincts were awoken by the possibilities that could arise should someone be able to cultivate the beans without having to rely on unreliable trade with a distant and unstable empire. She learnt as much as she could and discovered that the bean was not a bean at all, rather it was the end product of a long process involving the fruit of a type of small shrub native to the tropical southern parts of the Mokolei Empire. With substantial Corlander settlements now in Terra Nova, she became convinced that these shrubs could be grown in the colonies in quantities large enough to import back to Belson and start a fad to rival the popularity of Cocoa drinks. She just needed a backer....

After graduating, she carefully prepared her research and managed to gain an interview with representatives of the East Terran Trade Company (ETTC). Interested in her proposal, they conducted their own research and decided it was worth investigating. Jennifer was dispatched to the Mokolei Empire to acquire samples of the shrub for import to the colonies. After six long months of research, she believed that she had recorded the growing and processing conditions accurately enough to be able to recreate them.

She purchased a large quantity of seeds for several different species of plant and had them transported by caravan to the Northern Mokolei port of Tazelft where the ETTC had recently established a small presence. From here they would be shipped to Cocovia for the next part of her plan.

A small build to introduce a new ETTC character and story arc I want to do introducing coffee to Cocovia.

I look forward to the progression of this story...  Will we get to see her seeds grown under the glass houses?

This does have a very good feel for Yemen

As usual, a beautiful build Ayrlego! And an intriguing story... I'm curious where those ships will dock later in the story... Mayor Brickford would always welcome new developments like this to Quinnsville...

Proof that you should have joined Kaliphlin. :pir-grin:

Very nice build, I'm in awe of the olive palm tree. :pir_laugh2:  Neat design with the subtle battlements!

Beautiful build! Great palm tree! And the tiles floor under the arches is very attractive. And of course, CAMELS!

What can I say? Excellent as usual. It's cool to see some variety. Looking forward to seeing where this goes, especially considering the destination.

But... an edmucated woman? In colonial times?! Sounds... dangerous... :look:  :pir-laugh:

A very nice build, as usual. I like the ground paved with tiles, and that building looks properly exotic.with all these arches and the rounded roof.

the usual  for another great one, your palm tree is exceptionnal !

Thanks Prof, the palm tree is from here. The life rings are the best solution to getting a non-flat tree that I have found so far.

Thanks Roadmokey, I considered green houses for the next instalment, but I figured they wouldn't be needed in the tropics, so I've just used a shade shed.

Thanks Blackbird. I am conflicted about where to establish the first plantation. The next instalment will be an educational research station/nursery just outside King's Harbour, but after that I'm not sure about the plantation/production facilities. I favour KH as sort of like our colonial capital, although Quinsville is more like the centre of our cafe culture... so both are very fitting. The great thing about KH/QV is they are connected by the wagonway... so maybe a split.... or maybe I'll just have to do two sets of everything!

Thanks Kai. At one stage Kaliphlin was a serious consideration! As mentioned above the palm tree is Full Plate's excellent design.

Thanks Capt Wolf, any excuse to get the camels out is a win right?!

Thanks Captain Dee. I always am torn between historical accuracy and making my make-believe world a better place... In this case I decided to go with a female lead, mainly as something different but also in the back of my mind maybe a possible match for Colonel Allcock? Who is still somehow a batchelor! I guess we'll see how things go.... :pir_laugh2:

Thanks Bodi, I was surprised I had enough 1x1 tiles for the pattern, so I'm glad it came out well.
