We've got him on the ropes. Let's take this faker down.

Bellanotte, keep that song going.

Dyric bends back down to the crossbow, and fires another volley from the front.

OOC: No one should be Doomed yet, since as it's written Passive I wouldn't come into effect until *this* Round.

Preemptive EDIT: I have more to say about that Passive (Passive I, for clarity), but I've been convinced to let it go for now.  Still leaving a note here just so it's noted that I have a Problem with it beyond ordinary playful banter/complaining/nitpicking.

Arthur smiles gratefully as Dyric aids his cousin, but he pales in terror as he realizes the danger Dyric is in.

"Dyric, no!!" he exclaims, hastily throwing an arm in front of the Assassin to hold him back.  "Don't get near him, he's done something to himself, it could kill you if you're not protected."  The Skirmisher surveys the situation, trying to puzzle out a way to steal the Golden Dragon's body from the false Doomsayer without engaging him in combat.

I think Alea Lacta Est should heal everyone.

Atramor throws himself to the ground as quickly as he possibly can as Althior conjures a massive storm of darkness, swirling around the Doomsayer like the eye of a hurricane. The rogue rolls over, and swears he can see the Doomsayer grow even more powerful - lethal, even, as he dissipates Althior's immense spells with a mere flick of his staff. Atramor stands, backing up slowly, reaching deep, deep into the depths of his coat - to a thing he hoped he'd never need to use - until he bumps into the armored form of Hoke.

"I can get him, mates. I can get him...and we won't need to lay a hand on the bastard. But, uh..."

The rogue clears his throat.

"I really need a Mulled Wine."

Rome breaks aim, and leans the crossbow up against his shoulder.

We have him dead to rights, nowbefore he'll have a chance to do anything. I've got a clear shot, and I intend to take this faker's head. Do you have a better plan?

QM Note: No one is currently Doomed, dealing damage to the Doomsayer will impart the effect this turn and on. If you'd like to discuss the actual mechanic, I'm OK discussing it PM, in the discussion thread, or if you'd like to wait till the end of the quest for the QM Lounge, that is OK too. To some extent I'd rather have those discussions sooner rather than later, so as to improve this last quest as it continues as opposed to waiting till the end and wishing it had been changed/explained earlier. :classic: I will say that this battle is not intended to be won "mechanically", it can be and there is a cost to winning it, but there are other things to be gained than just a simple victory. As to the effect itself, as the final quest of Heroica, the stakes and consequences are intentionally high and character altering.

"Here you go," Hoke says after fishing in his pack a bit.

As Atramor chugs down the spiced alcohol Hoke administers, he feels a deep warmth flood his body, and with it an overwhelming confidence that he could take on more punishment than he believed possible. Something's he going to need, as he finally opens his palm to reveal a sliver of black stone, very slightly transparent, with wips of shadow swimming under the surface of the crystal. The rogue grimaces a bit as he unsheathes the Pheles Kris slightly.

"I do. This is gettin' ridiculous, so...gonna have to do somethin' pretty unpleasant here. Sometimes ya' gotta fight asshoIe with asshoIe."

He cuts the bottom of his hand very slightly on the kris, and in an instant blood more or less leaps out of the wound and somehow swirls into the Archdemon's Summonstone as Atramor spends 120 health to give the archdemon 120 mana.

The stone grows warm as it suffuses with blood, and one of the wips inside it seems to escape the interior of it somehow, and it appears as though the odd, dark crystal that Atramor holds aloft is casting a shadow a hundred times its size on the floor of the tomb. The shadow grows dark, until it appears not as a trick of the light, but as an abyss, endless and utterly black, save from a reddish glow that emanates; and with every passing moment, becomes stronger, as though something foul, powerful, and utterly evil were about to rise from its depths.

The archdemon will use Azazot's Rule on the Doomsayer.

Passive Special I: Dooming Curse - If at the end of the round the Doomsayer is at half health he Permanently (Quest Long) Dooms anyone dealing damage to him

So, I don't think we actually need to worry... it says at half health, and 1016/5832 ≠ 50%... as long as he doesn't suddenly gain exactly 1900 more health, no issues! :pir-tongue:

Hel, Dyric mutters, dropping the crossbow. Gazing in awe at Atramor's deed, he readied a potion just in case.

Do you want to put Bellanotte before you in the order, Atramor? Just in case?

"Allyin' yerself with such dark forces, heroes? What have ya become?"

Hoke slings a Mulled Wine to Atramor as the Rogue Thief begins the ritual. Moments later a terrifying figure materializes within the cavern, its red eyes glowing, a wicked scythe at its side. In a fell sweep the archdemon cleaves the multitude of duplicate founders in twain each of them falling into a pile of silvery dust.

"I'm inclined to agree, Matthias--though I have to wonder if this is really the last we'll see of him.  But even if he was human, he's probably better off dead.  The real Doomsayer--whose name was "Morduin the Doomsayer", by the way, not "Untergang Flagonfist of Clan Ironpeak" or whatever--died on Doomsayer Island, sealing up a Dark Angel named Lucifuge, who bore an undying grudge against Heroica afterward.  The Dragonlord told us about it a while back."  Arthur bows his head in grief--while he and Cain had had their disagreements, he'd never thought the Veteran deserved to die over them, and despite their differences a part of Arthur would always be grateful to the man for bringing him and Miirym together in the first place.  "I'm not sure if this dust pile supports or disproves my current guesses--I haven't seen a lot of research on what happens if an undead becomes a Nephilim--but my current theory is that these would-be Founders are Lucifuge's latest minions, and they've set out to finish what their predecessors couldn't."

Arthur watches Matthias and Chesterine's interaction with a bemused smile, when a thought occurs to him.  "We need to leave.  Now.  Grab the body--we need to get back to Ziegfried Manor before they do; there's still five other false Founders out there, and they clearly believe in guilt by association; I can't leave my family at risk."

Matthias recoils at the thought of permanently disturbing the Golden Dragon's grave, then realizes that of course the - fake? - Doomsayer has already moved the body and that Chesterine should probably be back home. "Yes, let's take the body back to Ziegfried Manor; we can work to find whatever answers are possible from the Golden Dragon's spirit when we get there." It suddenly occurs to Matthias that he might have spared himself a lot of embarassment if he had suggested that idea from the beginning.

Just as I thought. Get this show on the road. Like Matthias said, get us basic facts, but also- the assassin gives a brief nod to Arthur. -ask her what she knows about Lucifuge making duplicate people out of magic.

Meaning what exactly? Are the names supposed to line up? Is he supposed to know how Lucifuge is?

"Chesterine, if ya' can contact the Golden Dragon's spirit, give it a shot. We need insight on these copies. And maybe she'll know something about this." Atramor scoops the silvery dust into a small vial.

WBD - Hoke consumed the Henry Award earlier.  If you haven't already change it, his HP should be +1.

Hoke watches as the rogue performs a blood ritual.  A chill runs down his spine as the demon-thing materializes into view, seemingly stepping forth from its hellish home.  He can't help but shudder a bit, though as he does, he feels the weapon in his hand tremble with excitement.  And then, in a flick of a giant scythe, it was over.

"What is that stuff?" Hoke asks as he watches the rogue scoop up the silver dust.

"Great question..." Realizing he's still carrying the Doomsayer's loot, Atramor hands Hoke the Prayer Beads. He then turns to the conjured spirit of the Golden Dragon, and hides a twinge of anxiety. This could go very poorly very easily.

"Er....greetin's. We, uh, hate to disturb your rest, but we're, well, the latest generation of heroes. From, ya'know, Heroica? Been two hundred fifty seven years or so since you founded it, I think...which makes this a lot more unbelievable...a group of people claimin' to the be the Founders showed up in Eubric a few weeks ago. They are absolutely goddamn convinced they're the real deal, and they've been causin' all sorts of trouble. Somehow they managed to get Heroica Hall shut down. Now, we ain't perfect, Lady Dragon, but..."

Atramor gritted his teeth a bit. "Believe me when I say it is nothin' more than...deepest of buIIshit to say the things that they're sayin', they think we've made things worse when we've saved all of Olegaia twenty times over! We've banished archdemons, we've put down pirates, and cults, and corrupt governments, we've seen good heroes die doin' the things that we do. I've been here for seven years, and I've put up with a lot of people bashin' what we do, but these...these damned charlatans have gotten Heroica shut down. Every last hero left, we're all tryin' to get to the bottom of this, because without Heroica - I mean, hell, you founded it, you know what would happen if we weren't around."

"Uh, anyhow....all this to say....we needed to visit you to know that these Founders are false, and given what the 'Doomsayer' just turned into," the rogue raised the vial of silver dust. "I'd say we know for damn sure. One of 'em is even runnin' 'round with your visage. We just; we need to know that you're the real Golden Dragon, we need to know if you have any idea what this dust is, and we need to know if....if there's anyone that's tried anything like this before, because two and a half centuries later, you Founders, or at least people that look like ya', still have enough pull to turn Eubric on its head."

"We barely were able to take down this lunatic, and there's two other groups of heroes out there lookin' for any leads they can. The Houses are in disarray, everythin' is fallin' apart, and every hero is now a criminal in the eyes of the city. You founded us, and, well, now we need your help to save us. Please. Anythin' that could help us."

Atramor swallowed hard as he kept his eyes trained on the spirit of the Golden Dragon. He'd never call himself sentimental, but there was something about coming face-to-face with one of Heroica's founders that struck him.

Dyric was hardly any less in awe than his first meeting with 'the' Golden Dragon, but any giddiness was swallowed by the grave nature of the task before them.

Hearing Arthur's speech, the assassin feels compelled to make one of his own.

Lady, as has been said, we hate to disturb you, but the circumstances have left us little choice. I am Dyric Rone, and my friends are Atramor, Arthur, Hoke, Matthias, Althior, Chesterine and Bellanotte. Please hear us out, we have come quite far to commune with you.

I won't deny that I've had my doubts of Heroica, Madame Dragon. I wondered if we had lost our way, and if these individuals were justified in kicking us out. Until recently, I had felt Heroica may have fallen too far. I fled to the streets, doing as much as I could without the name of Heroica on me.

But these past few days have shown me just how much hope Heroica still has. Old Heroes have streamed in, banding together to battle these forces. To preserve the heart of Heroica. Atramor is right, we've saved countries and protected families. Parents have received back the children, peace has been made. All because of Heroica.

I am Duplovian, Lady Dragon. I grew up on tales of the Miracleworker. I refuse to let someone traipse around with his face and tarnish his name and the organization he created. Help us take Heroica back, and reform it to what it should be. Heroica needs leadership, yes, but leaders like us who believe in the message of Heroica. Help us take it back from these doppelgängers. If you know anything that could help, please tell us.

"I am a spirit, rogue, my time to impact this world is long past. My bones lie here and those of my dragon in Dastan. Considering how quickly the people of Eubric turned upon you, I can't imagine, you were entirely innocent, no? That they would so easily forget and so easily run to some impersonators, troubles me more than the falsifiers themselves. If the deeds you claim are true, than the error that overshadows them must be great indeed."

The ghost inspects the vial Atramor holds up.

"I am no alchemist, I could not tell you, even living, what the substance may be. As for stealing a likeness, there are many methods, magic, alchemy, powers from beyond our plane, their are even creatures and races who are known to change their shape or form. I cannot be your salvation, rogue, for if you do not realize what folly led you and the organization I founded to this end, you or your successors will simply wind their way down the same path in the future."

"Ah you begin to see the heart of the issue, Dyric of Duplovia. Heroica was neither my nor my companions greatest achievement. No, it was the lives of those who sat under its roof. Those who came to us with neither family or friends and left with both. Those who lacked skill and left with confidence and competence. Those who only cared for themselves and left full of selflessness and compassion for those around them. We took farmhands and showed them the good they could do in this world and the pride in that. We took princes and showed them the humility that gains the respect of all men. Heroica was never a building that could be closed, it was a commitment to a community that would not stand back and idly watch the world destroy itself. It was a commitment to sacrificing oneself for the betterment of one's neighbor. It placed no absolute faith in either itself or any other institution, it put its faith in people."

The Golden Dragon pauses.

"The only advice I can give you is to find out the goal of these impostors, find out what they are after. If not that, their source, all things have a beginning. My companions and I did and thus so must these impersonators."
