just2good Posted May 23, 2010 (edited) Today, I went to Toys'R'Us looking for summer 2010 sets. Luckily, they had some. Information: Set Number: 8897 Minfigures: 2 ~ Team Extreme Racer; Backyard Blaster Racer Peices: 191 Release: (US/Canada and some of Europe) May 2010 Price: $20 USD _________________ Now onto the review! Box: Box contains: For some reason, their is no "World Racers" set advertisements in the instruction booklet: Peices: A new spear/grapple peice and trophy: Minifigures and shark: Extra peices: All together: Boat 1: Boat 2: Trophy holder (the flag is a sticker... They could've just used the old printed flag peice): A video on the mechanisms. All photos and videos can be found here! ________ VERDICT: Playability: 5/10. Not much things to play with, you have a fish 'flinger, a shark, two boats, and a spear. Details: 8.5/10. Nice sticker details. Peices (not including minifigures): 4/10. Not much new peices; though you have the trophy, spear and shark peices. Price: 9/10. 191 peices for $20 is good now-a-days Minifigures: 7.5/10. Only two unique minifigures; they should've included a TW Crew Member. Overall: 34/50 ~ Good ~ Not the best set of WR but a good one indeed. __________________ Thanks for taking the time to read this review, until next time, bye! prateek Posted May 23, 2010 w00t! I like this set, although the boats look a lot smaller than I had thought.
Dannylonglegs Posted May 23, 2010 This set may be one of my favorites of the theme. I just love that new grappling hook! The fish catapult is a fun idea and the barrel is good in grey. Some of the pictures are a little blurry, and the color's a tad red. Since all of these pics are on Flickr, I suggest going through picnik with them (edit photo) and pressing auto-fix. That should get rid of the color problems. It may be allot of work though . Thanks for the review, and If I could say one thing to those obnoxious stickers it would be; ~Insectoid Aristocrat
Oky Posted May 23, 2010 Thanks for the review. This is the only set that remotely interests me in this line. It seems to be a good parts pack. I can understand that TLC wouldn't want to print so many pieces, but the stickers are annoying. I mean, even the flag piece? Come on! Well, at least now we have the choice to put it on a 2x2 tile and use it as a checker board. The fish cannon is funny indeed, but that harpoon shooter seems pretty useless without any string. If I could say one thing to those obnoxious stickers it would be; Hahaha! Nice one!
squidman85 Posted May 23, 2010 Flick-fire grapple hook isn't new.It was in 8633(the same with grey barrel, that was in Agents 8600).I don't like pieces, except trophy, hook, shark, saws, barrel and some stickers.
Peppermint_M Posted May 23, 2010 Thanks for the review! I am certainly getting this set too. I agree that the boats are smaller than they appeared to be, but still just as cool looking. I do not mind the stickers, and with all my spare flags I can make a chess board with the stickers
lightningtiger Posted May 23, 2010 Thanks for the review 'just2good' - odd a fish cannon ? At least the shark will be happy for the feed ! The figures are the only real good part of this set, the boats are okay, but overall it's only fair. I'm a conformist! !
BrickPerfection Posted May 23, 2010 Hmm that looks much like the return of the good old shark! Although it's a little primitive, I like it a bit more than the more childish new ones! Can't say much on the set as I'm not really into Acton Themes... but looks ok.
Gresn Posted May 24, 2010 (edited) Good review, cool set with rare SHARK!!! And price is attractive. Edited May 25, 2010 by Gresn
Aanchir Posted May 25, 2010 Hmm that looks much like the return of the good old shark! Although it's a little primitive, I like it a bit more than the more childish new ones! Can't say much on the set as I'm not really into Acton Themes... but looks ok. I have to say I prefer the new shark. After all, other LEGO creatures like horses and... well, humans... get printed details, so it makes sense for the sharks to as well. Plus, the newer sharks have more attachment points (studs on top and clips on the dorsal fin), making them a lot more "LEGO"-feeling than the old ones. What would be ideal would be if for some sets (not all, because angry sharks are still cool) LEGO would do the new shark with alternate printing, so as to give it expressionless, "fishy"-looking eyes like the original. This is a pretty neat set, and I like the consistency offered by having some of the same sponsorships on these vehicles as on Tiny Turbos and other Racers sets from past years. Minifigures are nice and expressive, but unlike some of the weird-eyed atrocities we've seen in race themes of the past (I'm looking at you, Drome), these ones still look fairly normal alongside other minifigures. Algernon Posted May 26, 2010 I think this set is the most attractive of all the WR sets I've seen so far. Mostly because of the price. The boats look good and I like the figs, it's a pretty good value for $20. If I wind up getting a WR set it'll probably be this one.
tkf Posted May 28, 2010 Stickers again :( Red is not my favorite colour, i like blue and green, but in this set red racing boat looks better. One of the most valuable part imho is old shark.
