2013 Train Sets

I just watched that movie a couple days ago and was sitting there trying to build the 777 in my head. Would definately like to see more LEGO engines based on newer north american models.

There IS a christmas train coming, but I think its just a small holiday set, and not a full fledge train set.

though I would be open to new version of some kind of Christmas train to go with the 9V holiday train.

More American deisel models would be good enough for me. The Maersk set is a favorite of mine but it's still readily available which may mean sales weren't too good. The Emerald Night was huge so they may take another crack at a large steamer. I know some type of Christmas train is coming out late this year but I would really like to see the single train car offerings again. It's been a long time since they have done that. Hopefully they will revisit it again.

Me too!... I hope sales did alright, maybe that will assure they'll build another american freight. I would also love to be able to get my hands on a nice large steam engine as the EN came out during my 'dark ages'. A chrismas train might be cool... but like you said I would love single rail car options, I bought a few at a pretty good price off eBay...

My hope is LEGO will introduce a level of consistency in container sizes for future cargo/intermodal trains.

Since the introduction of the LEGO CITY theme, there are three different container sizes which make it difficult to integrate sets together. 7992 & 7994 use a 6x10 container, 7939 uses a 6x12 container and 10219 uses a 6x16 container.

The LEGO container of the 1990s was a standard 4x8 container and allowed integration between Train- and Town-themed sets. Containers from Train Sets 4563, 4537, 4549, 4564, 4552, 4555, 4565, & 4557 could all be used with Town sets 6352, 6541, & 6542 and even 4030!

The inconsistency of modern container/intermodal sets is frustrating when creating a LEGO town/city using official sets. A LEGO CITY intermodal facility for 2013 spread across a seaport/harbor, cargo station, container transport, and cargo train would be most excellent!

I certainly agree with your comments regarding containers, there needs to be some sort of consistency size wise. I had originally modified the containers from 7994 and 7992 years ago by making more realistic doors that could open compared to the 6 x 5 x 1 panel, for a while I was sort of happy with them but there was two things that really bugged me, one being the short length and the other being the side panels just did not look right. The other day I decided to go for a total facelift of them, I increased the length to 12 studs long and I replaced the panels on the side and end with plates covered by tile cladding to give the corrugated look, I also took the opportunity to tile the top as well to five them a more realistic look. The reason why I chose the 12 stud length is that 2 of them can be comfortably fitted to a 28 stud long train base (as well as 24 stud long train base), another reason is that they are slightly bigger than my tankertainers and the 16 stud long ones would have dwarfed them.

I think the thing about the container issue (if it even is an issue) is that, like all City sets, TLG want to keep the brick count down as low was possible but still maintain a particular scale. So if they can use less bricks in one particular build whilst sacrificing detail that only a small percentage of people will notice, then that's what they'll do.

The 1990's Train sets swung a little more in the opposite direction, but I think in an attempt to make the train builds more universally appealing and better to handle, they've simplified them dramatically and of course used more specialised/large components.

As for the 2013 rumour mill, I think we'll definitely see a new addition to the Exclusive product line of trains But thinking about what style of train they'll pick is very tricky... We've already had several diesel loco's, a steam train in the Emerald Night and more recently a branded Maersk train. I can't see TLG going for an electric variety because to compliment the design and necessity of this transport, one would really need several carriages and up to now the trend has just been standalone locomotives.

Tell you what I would love to see though - another steam train! The Emerald Night was just stunning, and the many MoC's that have been produced only prove that the potential is there for more.

What I'd love to see-

1. A CROSSTRACK, I still cant figure out why they haven't..

2. Like the thread starter wanted - ramp system/elevated track system. Also something raised incorporating a train-bridge.

3. Straight rail only packs.

4. Bring back the licensed Shell themed set's!

5. Bring back the entire 80's rail theme capabilities for that matter lol (I know it won't happen).

Something subway-themed would be nice. Also, very small motors might be helpful, i.e. something along the line of 2x4. Doesn't have to be powerful.

As far as new sets for 2013 I'd like to see some sort of electrified 9v-like rail so that draisines can operate concurrently with battery-powered trains or vice-versa. Because let's face it: no draisine, no matter how big or small, will be able to host its own motor and battery pack.

I think it'd be nice if they introduced some huge duplex and triplex-steamers with tons of detail that can mount a bunch of M-motors or even a few XLs, and maybe a LEGO PF "smoke" generator. That'd be pretty cool.

Counterbalancing the huge steamer idea, why not have some smaller switch engines sold at a deliberately lower price point with a few cars? Not a whole lot of people can spend $500+ in one shot on a huge steam loco.

Better yet, why not sell individual cars like coal and grain hoppers or liquid containers for an even lower price? Then we wouldn't have to invest in an entire new locomotive just to get our hands on some new cars.

Going back to locomotives, why not have articulated ones like Garratt, Mallet, or even Meyer articulations so that the triplexes I mentioned earlier could run around standard-size flexi-track pieces?

I would also love to see cog-rail pieces so that the trains could travel up really steep grades (7%+ where adhesion-based locomotives slip a lot).

I think you've missed the point; TLG want customers to spend more on each product in order to gain a particular feature. By the end of the 90's, they had saturated the market with train accessories and they were not selling as well, which is partly why they moved the train products into the City theme.

It's not as easy to just sell such hoppers/containers at a cheap price because this would grossly affect the sales of the larger complete train sets. In addition, if they won't sell as many units as non-train products, then TLG have to produce less, and that in-turn makes them more expensive to make.

I actually took a look at both the inventories because my gut feel was you were wrong.[1] I think the main thing in the favour of the Holiday train was more magnets and train wheels. For me the red train doors, and many plane windows really appealed in the Hobby Train, and I think it has a better range of parts in a single color (red). It probably depends on what you find more useful to a large extent. I got my Hobby trains at half price too so I guess value wise they were pretty good, but not necessarily at full price.

You have a very good point about the Red Train Doors, before the Hobby Train set came out they were very rare in new condition and were as dear as poison even in used condition, I have a very nice stockplie of Red and Green Train Doors that I sourced from Bricklink and Shop @ Home for future projects .

[1] You can always divert this thread to 16+ where such behaviour is not only condoned it's encouraged .
