I'm surprised to fins so, much detail and activity in such a small space. I think, in a good way, you've gone far beyond the classic feel. As for anything missing. I can't think of anything, it all seems rather complete to me. I like the guy in a barrel too, there's always got to be a guy in a barrel.

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
kurigan replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
No worries. I like the changes. -
I've started a build which will address these things ,but it's a bit more ambitious than I figured, so it's gonna take a day or two to finish. I'll be back then and I think everyone will be amused

Wow that got away from me fast! What an excellent response all around though. I'm glad my befuddlement can be so inspirational, truly. On the general front, I wholeheartedly support the creation of a guide and would be happy to help in any way I can. I'd suggest two threads though. One that is just the edited guide and another for questions and such. Just to keep things from getting muddled up, like I've found here. As for my personal dilemma: when it all started I figured I'd be most likely to join Corrington or the Sea Rats. I don't really know though. I suppose that for all my pomp about naval realism I'm a bit too much of a profiteering scallywag myself. Don't be surprised to find if my loyalties can be bought by the highest bidder. My strengths obviously lie in shipbuilding and even though the stress I've put myself through over the last few months has diminished my enthusiasm somewhat, I still have my existing fleet and a couple of never-before-revealed projects to bring to the table. Part of what's attracting me to BoBS is the opportunity/inspiration to go beyond that though. Custom figures are not a big part of BoBS, for the sake of general repetition, but that and characterization are something I thoroughly enjoy doing, but have felt little reason to expound upon with my MOCs on my own. I also want to work on my land based building; architecture, fortification and landscaping but lack inspiration. So I guess my most burning question is, who has a place in their regime for someone with my talents and ambitions? edit/after though: Here's what you can do with a guy like me. Say you have a colony you want to develop but your neighbors are giving you trouble about it. Well I can sail in with my fleet of slops and set up a defensive network and land personnel, to start with fortifications an encampments. From there I can start contributing to colonial development with industry and agriculture. And, if my fleet happens to take a few prizes in the process, well that's just more wealth to go around.

Ok, so lately I've been tempted to give BoBs a shot but, as I've said in several conversations, I find the whole mind boggling. Well, I figured "why not start at the beginning and see if I can get a grasp on things this time?" So, I opened up the "Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Introduction and Starting Thread". First page goes Ok, doesn’t seem to be to vital to memorize it all especially as I know some things have changed already. Next page seems like a bunch of questions and conversation, no big deal. A few more pages of the same, then I hits me. "How many pages of this are there?" 80! 80 pages of introduction to sift through. For sure most of it won't apply, but how do I know I'm not missing something vital in the fray? That brings me to my point: Is there some kind of repository of pertinent information or, even better, a new members'/late comer's guide? Personally, I wouldn't even know who to declare for. The faction introduction threads aren’t much of a lighter read. I'd like to pick a faction based on mutual value; that is, I want to bring something into the mix which will better my team and pay off in the end. I really can't be the only one wondering and I do apologize if I'm repeating something I may have missed in the myriad pages of unfiltered data.

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
kurigan replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Constellation- Mast @Legostone True. @Umbra-Manis Well, it all depends on what you want to see. You see us going back and forth about what historic/realistic or not, but that's just us entertaining ourselves. I think you have a pretty good start here. Did you have any inspiration to begin with. a ship you saw else where, fantastic or not? The masts might be a bit thick and short. you could try a 1 X 1 mast and see how that suits. -

kurigan replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Legostone I never noticed that before! They all connect to a single eye on a lead all the way down to the channels. That's insane, brilliant, but insane. The implications for stability are apparent. edit: i also never noticed/saw a port-o-pot on the focsle before. guess they don't want anyone trying to use the heads during a photo op! @Bregir Oh in that case use a 6558. It not inaccurate, just not common. It's something I've really only seen on later period ships. Perhaps in an effort to have something like the added stability like Legostone points out on Constitution. In any case, as I've found, cheating isn't at all necessary, though I do find Legostone's idea of a simple string through the center of the mast quite clever. Going forward, when/if ever, I too am of a mind to stick with mounting to the main shrouds. -

@Bregir Well you didn't ask me, but perhaps I'm feeling magnanimous, or maybe I'm just bored. So, I'm gonna chime in with my own experience and you can take or leave it. :) I've successfully used two methods for my futtock shrouds. The first was to lark's head them around the mast. On the first version of Ramcat, I actually built 4073s in to the mast for the purpose. On Nonesuch I built in 3482s with an axle through the middle. On Reckless it became apparent that such a configuration just wasn't going to work so I tried hitching the futtock shrouds right to the shrouds below. Remarkably it worked out quite well. Where I expected the main shrouds to deflect in an unsightly way, the tension kept them almost completely straight. They also seemed to find their own position at about 45 degrees and don't ride up anymore. With both configurations I too have as much stability. Side note: if you're going to "cheat" with internal reinforcing, be it of Lego or other elements, the top masts are the most likely place. If your rigging is doing it's job, it shouldn't be necessary though. So there ya have it, for however much you value my advice. Cheers mate! -

kurigan replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Legostone Looking good. That's the way to do it! The key is the bobstay. That's gotta be firmly anchored so you can really pull tension down and then you can fight that chain reaction with the backstays, like you say you've already done. I rather like her without any embellishments, just the black and red. very Republican France like; makes me think of Acheron from the movie. You've got enough space. If you put together two more long guns you could do stern chasers, which fills the space above the gallery. Then a simple name plate below the windows wold make her look plenty well decorated. Yeah they're not in inventory, but i always have a back stock too. unfortunately though, I've just been through it and still none, sorry mate. -

It’s nothing “wrong” about it. Now it is much improved though. It’s interpretative of a type, but not a model of a specific class or vessel, so it can be what it has to, to fit your needs. Any number of excuses could be made from “it’s just BoBs” to “That’s the way the ship’s master wanted it, he’s got some strange ideas about mast configurations.” Who knows, it might have been some tiny, back-water shipyard’s idea of innovation. Just put a gigantic spanker and a big-ol ensign on it and it’ll look good, IMHO. You might forgo a figurehead altogether. The rest of the ship is pretty Spartan. -
Well folks, I’m about shipped out over here. It’s felt like a rather thankless decade of hard effort for little payoff. Despite some kind words, I’ve never believed that my works were all that well received. In fact I’m sure there are more than a few builders who’d prefer I’d just go away. Well that much isn’t going to happen. I’ve made a commitment to this community and I’ll stick with the duties of my office until such time as I am dismissed. Don’t really expect anything ship based from me in the near future though. My heart just isn’t in it anymore. I don’t look at my unfinished projects with the same enthusiasm I used to. I think I just need to take a step back and figure out what sort of priority Lego ship building still holds in my life; it may simply be time to call it and move on.

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
kurigan replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Legostone I like the red on red color scheme. I'm less a fan of the tan window frame gun ports. Something about her has been bugging me all day though. I really had to stare closely to put my finger on it, but I think I finally hit the nerve. I think the mizzen is to far forward. Swap the wheel and the mizzen around and I'm sure it'll balance out. You could try paper sails. With a spray bottle of water and a box fan, and you can mold them to look wind blown. -
Alright, let's see if I can clear a few thing up here. Please mind that I'm not intending to "correct" anyone, but there seems to be some confusion over how these things work. Moreover, even though I've offered explanations of the subject before we all can take advantage of this public post to reach more and newer builders who may not be aware of those previous conversations. A sail tends to be names for what it attached to, so a staysail is laced to a stay and a gaff sail to the gaff (that the upper yard on the rearmost sail on this vessel). There are two ways to furl a gaff sail. Where a boom (that's the lower spar) is employed the sail can be gathered between the two spars, like in phred's picture, by lowering the gaff on it's halyards. The other method is useful for both boom and soft footed ( no boom) gaff sails. The clew is pulled up to the throat and the sail is a gathered against the gaff and mast. Though it really doesn't matter, since this is just a BoBS build and it's not meant to occur in the real world that seems to be the primary source of confusion here. A little more about gaff sails: a gaff sail will always be lashed to the mast from which it hangs. In either case of a boom or soft footed gaff sail, they cannot cross the crosstrees. So like here, where the boom hangs from the mainmast and the gaff hangs from the topmast, the sail just won't work. "But if the boom hangs any lower it would hit the mini-fig crew in the head." Yeah, that happens, remember Will Turner on Interceptor? It's just something sailors learn to deal with on small craft like this. The forestay sail thing garmadon pointed out seems to be much the same as the gaff sail. There should be, if you want to be hyper accurate, a portion of the sail bunched up against the stay making the furled portion somewhat triangular. That would be the part laced around the stay. Now before I sign off on the topic I just want to say, I like this build. It has a lot of merit. None of what I've said is meant to be disparaging. There is no need for anyone to feel threatened or shown up. I'm just trying to help. If there is something unclear about what I've said, you can ask me for clarification, approach me personally, or just google it, since I don't use any terms you can't just look up.

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
kurigan replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
kabel did one. Those ports do look more proportional, but I see where you run into structural problems. Seems like the biggest hand up to them is the hinges though. might work better on a bent side. That's a neat ship your working on there. I'd like to see more of her. i keep saying this but no one seems to take notice. I've had no problem using 3937s to add tumblehome to my bent sides. I can't see how this hinge method would be very different. Curvature in to dimensions seems to be the "holy grail" of Lego ship modeling. so far I think Revenge was the most successful attempt, but she was done on a scope and scale most cant afford, in money, bricks, time or space. -

Two things about this build which I really like and want to point out. First is the use of a rubber band in place of lacing n the backstay. That's just a clever way to save effort and materials on a small, and likely not permanent, build. Good thinking. Also, the way you the tumblehome is clever. You only used hinges on the rear most section and have the gunwale suspended for a couple sections over tiles, so that the bricks make their own smooth transition. In general you've been showing some very clever techniques and I for one appreciate it.
