Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Off the wall replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Getting ready for fall/winter residential builds. Received PAB order in only 11 days. 100 sand green masonry bricks on the way from eBay. Still too much to do outdoors to stay inside and brick. -
LEGO Architecture 2015 News & Discussion
Off the wall replied to tafkatb's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Thanks for the translations! I'll pass on this due to cost and logistics. Besides, it appears to be a commissioned by Hilton MOC and not an official Lego set. So, my OCD completist mentality won't be tortured by not having it. But, it is a thing of beauty. -
LEGO Architecture 2015 News & Discussion

Anyone know what this means.... Anyway, is the Paris Opera like a MOC that was created to serve Hilton Hotels as a promotional item? -
What are good sets for building a town/city?
Off the wall replied to ilikeboomerang1's topic in LEGO Town
I think the most important aspect of a Lego town is how it's all tied together so that it looks like a town and not just a collection of Lego sets. MOC a park or green area, maybe a nice MOC town square. Streets? Anyway, sounds like a fun and ambitious project. Enjoy. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Go to eBay and search for Lego modular instructions. They're similar to TLG instructions, but not quite as elaborate. I've found them to be adequate. Most are fairly inexpensive, so you don't have a lot to lose by buying one or two of them. Quality will vary by seller and some sellers give you a few sample photos. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Finding a great new modular design is not hard to do. Just look at some of those created by contributors to this thread or to some of those submitted to Lego Ideas. Problem is, I don't know what's a winner and what's a loser based on Legos sales and accounting standards/goals. I fully realize they aren't going to lose money just to make the Ideas modular museum or the Barnes/Noble-Starbucks available to me. That's what took me to MOCs. Large piece count sets with hundreds of similar color structural bricks give me the basis for a nice MOC. Again, that's why I miss GE and TH. I've also purchased plans on eBay for modulars. But, I've only build one based on those plans, so far. I just received about 150 windows off eBay and I'm waiting for my PAB masonry brick order. So, even if I'm disappointed again by the official modular release, I'll have some new ones by the end of the year that, if I don't like them, I'll have only myself to blame. -
Great work.

Lived with OCD my entire life. Sometimes, it's fun. Sometimes, well, not so much. -

I'd like to see more use of masonry style bricks. On the 'brick linking modulars' thread, someone did a GG using the sand green masonry style green bricks and it actually looks better than the original. The theme of any new modular is largely irrelevant to me but I would prefer a building that has fewer than three uses/tenants. For the future, it would be nice (but probably totally impractical on many levels) for TLG to use some on the modulars seen on Ideas as the basis for future sets. I'm also waiting for PS to be back in stock. It's a great way to start MOCing as it provides an easy template to work off of and modify. I've used PS instructs as the inspiration for nine MOC residential buildings. I do miss TH and GE because they had so many elements and colors that work in MOCs. I think I ended up buying a total of 15 GEs and 5 THs. When you start late in life, you have to play 'catch up'. -
At what point is it futile to restore old sets?

Sounds like a good plan. Enjoy! -
The colors are great. In my opinion, it looks better than the original.

That's probably the best take on the modular series. It ain't what it used to be. Fine. Move on to the architecture series that's more tuned in to the tastes of mature adults. The only thing I suggest is that Lego drop the '16+' age on the modular product descriptions. Times have changed and the second generation modulars are for the pre-adult or less than mature adult market. -

Do what you enjoy. I also collect old radios and people talk about 'rescuing' them (they use 'restore' and 'rescue' in the same manner). I don't rescue objects. I rescue living things like dogs. So, there's no real merit in restoring old plastic unless you enjoy it. Or, unless its some rare object that merits restoration and preservation. If it's just a bunch of old plastic, I'd move on to the wonderful new sets that you can find at Lego.com. Bottom line.....do what you enjoy the most. -
Agreed. Looks like she needs to visit a chiropractor.

Nice result, degrizn. You've captured the essence of the MS modular. Only thing that seems obvious would be to replace the bright red arches.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Off the wall replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Every once in a while, amongst the numerous attempts and suggestions to drag the modular series back to a children's market, I feel it's helpful to quote the following from Wikipedia (recognizing Wikipedia is not the final authority in most matters. But, if does provide a good summary of facts concerning this subject). "Modular Buildings is a series of Lego building toy sets introduced in 2007. Created in response to feedback and suggestions from the Adult Fans of Lego (AFOL), and the Teen Fans of Lego (TFOL) community, the sets in this series are generally intended for more advanced builders with most sets containing more than 2,000 total pieces and making use of unorthodox building techniques which have not been tried before in official Lego sets. In contrast to most LEGO sets which are aimed at children and adolescents, the suggested age of most sets in the Modular Buildings series is 16 years or older. The Modular Buildings sets have been received with positive reviews, being considered by Lego designers and fans as "toys for adults". The sets include Market Street, Cafe Corner, Green Grocer, Fire Brigade, Grand Emporium, Pet Shop, Town Hall, Palace Cinema, Parisian Restaurant and the newest model, Detective's Office." -
what would it take to cut out LEGO from your life?
Off the wall replied to legoman19892's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Well, if I ever find a satisfactory 1960 thunderbird ('square bird'), that would probably put Lego on the back burner for a while. I just got into Lego a few years ago. While I like it, the lack of so very few true AFOL sets may eventually result in a total lack of interest on my part. -
Just finished the build. For me it was more about TBBT than it was about Lego. Sure, relative to other sets on a price per piece basis, it's probably expensive. Nothing really challenging or different. But as a fan of TBBT, I like it. Also bought the F40 which looks so stubby it's almost as if someone has parked a real F40 in front of one of those carnival mirrors. I may build my next modular apartment building around TBBT set.

"I was tempted to leave out the lamppost in this one, but I couldn't do it. Just one of those things for me I guess." Understood. I have a MOC street of nine MOC residential type buildings. Going outside that traditional template and losing some lampposts, connecting pins and other aspects normally associated with modulars was a tough hurdle to get over. Anyway, very nice work on this one.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Proving, again, that sometimes a little information (especially when it's in a language you don't understand) is worse than no information at all. -
I usually think the 16 wide MOCs look more like shoeboxes. But, this one is great. The lines are so clean. The simplicity of it is so appealing. Lose the light post and you have perfection. Nice work.

If you're right, and odds favor that you are......whatever. I'll just buy three or four and make what I want.
