Any tips for building the back of a pirate ship
Captain Becker replied to Firefighter 211's topic in LEGO Pirates
Try designing first in Digital Lego, and look for inspiration from offical Lego sets and other peoples MOCs. Goodluck whit it! Captain Charles J. Becker -

[MOC] - HMS Flycatcher - 14-gun sloop-of-war

Well first of all I think youre being too critical of yourself. Your first attempt isnt an utter disgrace as you put it, you shoudlve seen my first ships how bad they were. Its a great looking ship whit parts you got at the time! That aside, this one is a great improvement and upgrade to it! Youve come a long way in terms of shipbuilding techniques! Captain Charles J. [MOC] - Pirates of the Children seas - a sloop
Captain Becker replied to Max_Lego's topic in Pirate MOCs
Well its a neat little sloop I give you that. However it aint a Bermuda sloop, Bermuda sloops had instinctive raked mast that was slanted to give it that rogueish type look. For more info and detail see the video below: https://youtu.be/XW-kx6C4WNk?si=UjW8GPKduFF_Xu9r -
I used to do this as well in the olden days whit LDD. Very nice remakes!

There arent any offical instructions other than one singe picture as far as I know. So you had/Have to reverse engineer it from that often EDIT: There might be some fanmade model instructors online these days though who have made the instructions already, but I dont know any sites for em.

It would work for any sailor/pirate I think, afteral beanies were very common sailor wear in the period. They didnt wear Cocked hats or bandanas as were let to believe.

3 for me. Displayability, and the cloth sails and flag are great. Modifications: Easy to do to make Her a Pirate/Trading vessel. Price: Not for me. I´ll happily skip this simply because of it.

I disagree whit that statement. Altough I love the Idea of more Lego Pirates, and ships to sail our way, making a minifigure scale large ships like Endeavour and Victory simply isnt realistic. The parts count would be trough the roof, and the price whit it. And altough Endurance is in miniature scale and hence costs a fortune! (Atleast what we know so far). I think we should go the opposite round! Go back to the roots, make simple, playsets, aimed for young audience! Just look at the Original Eldorado Fortress! Its simple, not a lot of parts. Sure its blocky and doesnt have all the detail the newer one has, but its was made to be played whit! AFOLs have ruined Lego, we expect bigger, better sets! And ofcourse we are ready to spend the money! But if youre a Kid, thats out of reach. Lego as a company is a Toy making company aimed mainly for Kids, whit evergrowing AFOL market. And Im not saying there shouldnt be ANY Expert AFOL lines out there. But we dont need 15000+ part HMS Lego Minifigure scale ships.

People often Dismiss this theme, but they miss the point that these were made for. Young people, and play. Sure they arent as glorious as the older Pirates theme was, and its extremly simplified and larged, meant for younger audience. Many hate the oversized figures, and the sets, is that warranted? I think not. This theme was the first Pirate Legos that I got as a kid, they were the only pirate theme going at the time. Even I as a Kid thought they were simplistic, but they allowed play and imagination to run wild, and to customize it to your hearts content. Not to mention this theme brought us first ever Pirate ship that actually floated! Weird looking as it was, the set had its flaws, mainly the unstable masts that fell and broke constantly. Many think that Kreggs pirate boat, the tiny sloop was a horrendous ship. I Honestly dont think so! Its a decent desing taken how many parts it used, and yes! I modified it. I removed the back and made it a crows nest, the took the only shooting cannon from the bigger ship and put that to the bow of the ship. Took the flame part out and repalced it whit a transparent light brick to be a lanters, cause even I knew a open flame on a ship just isnt safe. I played whit that thing more than the big main ship. The white shark felt like a jackpot, a rarity! Sure you couldnt remove the hats and modify the Pirates, even though I did try. I still harbor these sets. Although packed away, I still fondly remember them. Not because how great they were, but how great of a palyvalue you got out of them, despite them being so few parts. Then the 2009 Pirates arrived, but thats a story for another time. But the main thing: This theme shouldnt be thrown aside and cast into the shadows, for simply being <insert that tiresome argument>. They are Pirate themed Legos, and important and integral part of Classical Pirate theme.
