GBC General Discussion
RohanBeckett replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well.. 4 days (incl 1 day setup!) of Brickvention 2017 is over! We managed to get 72 Modules running - a new Australian record! although it did take a couple of days before everything settled in, and was running smoothly I did a 'Tom-Style' narration video, but I don't think it'll be up for a few weeks.. in the meantime, here's mine - (and yes.. the red ball popped out a couple of times! :) We really tried to have as many unique modules as possible, rather than 20 of the same.. and the organisers of the event put us right at the front-center of the building, so it was the first thing the crowds saw, as they entered..- 1,124 replies

[MOC] Bell ringing machine
RohanBeckett replied to aeh5040's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
very nifty! nice sounds too! amazing the patterns of notes that come out of a 'fixed' programming... what does the flywheel do? just smooth out the motion? -
Ha.. if you think they are HIS, you are sadly mistaken! ;) although he likes to think it's all his, from time to time! @DrJB Yes... that thought had crossed my mind too... but for now, it's a fun hobby that we both enjoy together... But I went through a lot of hobbies when I was younger.. Model Planes, Kites, building treehouses.. electronics.. Model Trains,( my fathers hobby).. But in the end... he's his own person, and he'll do whatever he wants in life... all we can do, is give him a good grounding.. as much experience and ideas as possible.. then off he goes!

This is my son's most recent invention.. doesn't do a lot, but he built the worm gearing box himself, after reading Sariel's book (and probably watching me build!) He watches @Sariel videos all the time, and asked "Can I show this to him?" so here it is! :) He's lucky to have a Dad who builds a lot (I build GBC's) and he's learnt from a young age gears, motors, and pneumatics We are a family of builders/fixers/creators... I do woodworking as another hobby.. so does his uncle.. Grandfather is model trains, and engineering... so I guess for us, this comes natural. We DO try to keep things in balance... not too much Lego.. not too much screen time.. and now, after almost 7 years.. it's nice to see him pretty well rounded.. still loves finding bugs in the backyard.. climbing trees.. or hammering and nailing scraps of wood. All these skills combine to produce something greater than a single skillset alone and here's what a Christmas present turned into, 2 days after it was opened..: was very amazed, that he got the 'ears' balanced... they fold back and the 'mouth' opens, when it goes forward at just the right speed!

Nico71's Creations
RohanBeckett replied to nico71's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Very nice.. I remember playing with one of these (non lego!) in a Kids Science Museum, a few years ago.. was lots of fun to play with! on a side note, I recently built your ball pump GBC, and will be using it on our layout at Brickvention, in Melbourne in a few weeks.. I was unable to get the spiral down to work 100% reliably.. so have had to change the output a little -
Go for a vintage 1980's 7740 Red and Yellow! or.. since you're from .nl maybe something in Orange? :)

not hard to tell how dissapointed you were with this set... 'oh look.. it has a broom and shovel'.. ;) you'd think they could have at least put a fold down ramp on the trailer, for kids to drive it up onto it.. I think it's a good starter model for those getting into technic - teaching basic studless building techniques.. and more complex than the pull-back vehicles... which are *barely* technic, and should really be in the Racers theme...

Lift Mechanism
RohanBeckett replied to DwalinF's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Good work, Doug, on the Lift, based on the chain. I've spent a lot of time tweaking my Truck Dumper loop, that Nalyd linked a few posts up.. and the that the main issue you have, in a GBC, (and a vertical implementation like the Elevator), is *balance* you don't want something lop-sided, that causes the motor/gears to strain unnecessarily.. the horizontal is easy, as the 'weight' is mostly same going in both directions I've got a couple of prototype scissor lift GBC's, that I'm working on, and it's quite difficult to get it working with zero strain on the motor - something that is a big concern to us GBC'ers who need to run motors for many days, non-stop! -

awesome work.. I'd love to build this for BrickVention.. (pretty sure I have parts)... it's just that other valuable resource: time, that is lacking :(- 41 replies

welcome to the hobby! although I'm not sure if you won't get exactly the same reaction from your wife, with regards to Lego, and parts... it's a bottomless pit, and can probably cost just as much... Some of the bigger, more detailed supercars from some of the better builders around here are upwards of 2500 parts...

[GBC] To and Fro

the auto clutch.. any chance of getting a few photos from another angle? can't quite see what the main switching yellow liftarm connects to, on the other side of the diff I'm still looking for a mechanism that, upon jamming.. will run reverse for a second.. and then continue back in the original direction..- 41 replies

VERY well done! Although I have seen the basic L-Beam mechanism before.. you have build an excellent all-round mechanism for it all! and as someone who just spent 4 hours last night, working on a custom GBC Module.. I know the work that goes into these things! :) oh.. and love the auto shutoff system! might have to borrow that idea for a few jammy modules I have!- 41 replies

yeah.. will post some... no.. not keeping it pure.. My Lego is to be mixed up and added/removed as needed.. heck I only bought the BWE as a parts pack! after a big Brickvention GBC exhibition in January, there's a high chance by BWE will be broken up and never built again (might build B model, though)

I'm in the process of modifying mine.. Building an 'open cut' section of landscape, that balls will fall in.. I added some of the rubber track inserts (from Fortrex set), on the 2nd conveyor, which significantly helped move the balls out... I have relocated the motor in front of the gearbox, since it'll just be stationary, on a GBC layout for 3 days in January. I am also thinking of doing a (possibly externally powered) sweeping motion to the main arm.. so it sweeps back and forth the open-cut landscape... but undecided if I'll eventually do this (time constraints mostly!!)

I'm sure @9v system will show some of his amazing progress soon! ;) BTW.. don't just limit yourself to Akiyuki's modules - there are a LOT of other amazing mechanisms out there, by other builders.. you can learn a lot by watching/copying/building other, smaller simpler mechanisms too and it's a challenge to build, and improve upon your own GBC's too... on the weekend, I finally pulled apart, and rebuilt/adjusted for the 4th time, one of my modules.... and HOPEFULLY it'll last a whole exhibition without jamming every 10 minutes...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np8j9TTZUrI Paste it in like this, and just let it sit for a second, it should 'convert' to an embedded video (I clicked the link - display as link) it might have to be the full www.youtube.com link, rather than the youtu.be one

8432 Turbo Command CD-ROM
RohanBeckett replied to AOW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
a lot of multimedia titles of that era relied on Apple Quicktime to work - particularly when the company wanted to support both Mac and Windows PC's. Most likely you'll need Quicktime 2, or 3 installed. Usually the quicktime installer will be on the CDROM itself This can be quite difficult to install on anything newer than 32bit XP... definitely near-impossible on 64bit operating systems. You may be best to use some form of Virtualization - VirtualBox, etc to install a complete copy of Win98... FYI - here is the previous Eurobricks thread - and all the videos are on Youtube anyway.. -
Scale
RohanBeckett replied to Huaojozu's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I don't think you'll find many technic sets at minifig scale - they are always far larger just take, for example, the humble minifig seat and compare it to the average Technic seat - in the 80's/90's we had this And most modern sets use a pair of , or to simulate a seat - and of course, once you get to Unimog, or Porsche Scale, it's even more out of whack. I think the closest you will get, are some of the mini technic sets - 8065 - , or even 8067 wouldn't look too bad in a minifig-scale display - maybe it's not surprising that both those examples use system parts! (dumper and crane!)
