REVIEW: Atlantis 8061: Gateway of the Squid
Strand replied to yellost's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Cheers for the review. Really digging the 'Cthulu' minifig. Want to get a murloc minifig army with these sets (for those WoW-inclined) -
Nice review. What a cute little ship, compared to the new Flagship, it's all quaint. Can't believe it was called "Flagship", more like Flag-dinghy.

^Agreed. The 20% off with the "Buy 2, get 1 free" is amazing, and the Myer One bonus points is just gravy. I asked the lady to make sure they stacked and she asked a manager, since there's no "Not in conjunction with any other offer" they let me go ahead. 6 Battle Packs for $73 a super bargain when you consider that Battle Packs retail for like $22+ these days. Edit: Wow, MicroM got screwed. There's no fine print saying that offers don't work together. My clerk double and triple checked it. If they refuse, go somewhere else or female canine to someone higher up. -

Is the Kmart $69 the cheapest price right now for the Neptune Atlantis Sub? Thinking of getting one and even with the Target discount, it's not quite there yet. -

$100 RRP, though their sale price was $70 for a long time at both TRU and Myer, picked up my one with the added sweetness of Myer One credit, and still not sure if it was worth it. The set's kinda big yet nothing great. Cannibalised it for the abundance of sleek black pieces. -
^Refrain from this please. If you want to purchase stuff, go in the right subforum or send him a PM. The chromie seems a sweet bonus, similar to how the chrome Vader worked in Europe, pick up a set and the clerks gives you a Vader from under the counter. I already have a couple chromie magnets but the quality seems a little iffy. Loose joints and such.

I would have preferred a smoke tinted version myself, but it's unlikely the production version is different from the recent pics. Notice the extra bit of printing near the top of the clear piece, looks pretty final to me. Though if it were a sticker, I'd merely apply it to a tinted piece from one of the other Slave 1s.

Godly level of detail. Though I lost the pics of the last version, I'd love to see a side by side comparison if possible.

-Shuttle: Not a big fan of Imperial style shuttles in general, they all seem to have the same basic structure and function (including the Republic one) but this looks like a fun set. And a medical droid -Wampa cave: A big meh from me. Already have a few Snowspeeders and it just looks like more of the same, but with even more premium priced 'white crap' (my term for all the white blocks they throw into Hoth sets for scenery that I never end up using) -Slave 1: Pretty much perfect, the colour scheme is spot-on. Bossk is so heavenly and the carbonite Han is also cool. STILL not sold on Boba (too.. Hasbro) and I'll probably swap out the cockpit piece for a smoke-tinted one. EDIT: The more I look at it, the more I love this ship. It's fixing all the problems and pet peeves I had with previous versions. The wing attachments are 2 paired supports instead of one (last Slave 1) or practically nil (Jango Fett's). The surrounding 'shield' or shoulder is now smooth and solid, instead of the mess last time. The ship also looks like it has a functioning ramp (not a carbonite block holder) and the missile launcher actually folds out instead of aiming inside the ship itself (JF's) or a seemingly useless blue block (last S1) -Turbo Tank: Must buy for me (missed out on first one) and it has a great minifig selection. Cad Bane and first official Twi'lek female, the AT-RT is super cute. -Pro-Koon's fighter: Very sleek looking. Will probably get this even though I avoided Anakin's and Ahsoka's versions. I'm sorry, the blue/white colour scheme is just fabulous. -Grievous: Much, much better looking than I thought. The cockpit piece actually looks alright and will be an instant purchase with me, I avoided the last version because it had nothing I wanted. But a new Grievous (still too Hasbro-y) with a bonus Mon Cal head and his droid flunky are great.

Picked up a couple (The green and red), I'd probably have grabbed Aayla Secura too but I was concerned her colour scheme would be 'off' compared to blue Lego arms, I noticed she's a shade lighter and more aqua in the upcoming official version. Will need to dig around for some sand greens but yeah, they're very nice minifigs, excellent quality and look totally find even with the love handles.

One of the most mind-blowing MOCs I've ever seen. The concept is very cool, sort of like a (if anyone's seen ti) Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds where humans live in a hostile future and inside massive fortresses and move around etc. The execution is amazing and looks very detailed, would have loved to see a lot more of it. Though there are certain technical issues with the concept. I find it doubtful that those few teeny tiny solar panels could have powered the entire thing even an inch. The addition of a landing strip is very cool, like a walking aircraft carrier.

So the magnet figures are essentially the same? If so, I'm a bit peeved that I bought the Separatist Egg ship twice for more Rodian heads if I could buy one in a cheaper set WITH palpatine. That said, some are saying the newer sets are better quality (minus red-eyed Mace Windu etc), but would you be able to distinguish between a magnet minifig and one from a set without knowing? (Pepsi taste test) and would Bricklink categorise them separately? Aka figure X from magnet set and the same one from a real set? Seems a bit dodgy, if you buy something and find out it's some poorer quality version.
-
Um correct me if I'm wrong (never bought magnet sets before), but don't magnet sets have an unsightly Lego Logo on the back of their torsos? I think keychain figs would be preferable, but even they have a big hole in their heads if you remove the metal piece.
-
Agreed. The head for Grievous is far too cartoony, check out the eyes (the old one only had indents). The plastic head shape is an improvement, but the paintjob sure isn't. And the body is far too complicated for a minifig, yes it's more detailed than the previous version but 2 separate colour schemes, what looks like a bendable knee and he will be barely be able to interact with existing Lego sets is a big no for me.
-
I'd agree with some of the sentiment regarding the minifigs. They're become a bit too 'busy', Boba and Grievous are the main offenders here, rest are fine. Boba just looks like it has way too many things going on, the new helmet just doesn't sit right with me, maybe it's just the angle but it. I think Lego minifigs were about the right amount of detail before, Chewbacca's a large and complex furry character but the minifig is just a large brown torso cover and it's just right. Grievous is less a simple minfig and more an actual figure, not sure if the grey and white parts are actually separate pieces of plastic, or there are rubber elements, or if there are additional points of articulation (no knees for minifigs please). Boba went from a simple design and now he has a separate antennae, jetpack, cape, 2 guns and the helmet's paint job is even more detailed than the Hasbro line. I preferred a minimalist look. Will have to wait for better pics.

Does it transform into a giant robot? Huge thumbs up by the way. Amazing attention to detail and scale. -

My TRU didn't have Swamp Speeders but I did take a look at the "Lego Case". It's pretty much a little cardboard box with a few crayons and a pad of colouring paper. I thought it was like plastic folder or something, but it's pretty much like a little freebie airlines give to children (do they still do that these days?) -
Still can't see it happening. Still far too obscure and before people bring in the CW cartoon again, it really must be put in perspective. It's not on free-to-air TV and it's not exceptionally popular. People have to realise that the Eurobricks demographic is not the same as the Lego/toy-purchasing demographic. It's like Transformers collecting, even though the hardcore older fans are the most vocal customers, the vast majority of Hasbro's business comes from well, clueless kids or their parents who have no idea who Starscream or Ironhide are, but Bumblebee? 'Hey mum! It's Bumblebee! I want it!', character recognition is a big draw for toy sales. A huge portion of this target demographic won't have experienced Star Wars EU comics, novels, videogames, ancient scrolls or musicals, let alone stream the TV show. 90% of people who classify themselves as Star Wars fans won't know what a 'Mandalorian' is. Believe it or not EB, we're not 'normal' toy consumers and what we consider run-of-the-mill lore for us may be a big '???' for mainstream customers.

TRU is offering a free Lego case for $50+ purchases I'll pick up the Swamp Speeder to get this probably. -
[MOC] Minifig-scale B-Wing (update) & Rebel Squadron
Strand replied to RenegadeClone's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Love this MOC. I love how the scale is much more accurage than TLG's official model, and shows just how large the B-wing is compared to the rebel fighters, it's designed to take on capital ships! The main guns look fierce. -

Big W. I picked up the Covenant version there purely for the minifigs which are about the right scale with Lego Master Chief MOCs. -

If you can find a Republic Cruiser for $150, by all means get it. I was lucky enough to find mine for $120 when TRU was having that sale, but even at RRP, I'd probably still get it. It's a very nice set, looks great on display etc. -
You guys just got shafted. I ordered one form S@H for $280 AUD, which although higher than the American price, is a lot more affordable than 200 Euro. Though being Europe, can't you order from neighbouring countries? Or simply just buy one over the border? I buy my lego interstate all the time and frequently carrying large Lego boxes on planes ("It's for a young nephew I swear!")

Unlikely, too obscure.

MISB - to open or not to open...
Strand replied to Mister Phes's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
The eternal to open or not open. On one hand, opening a rare, discontinued set is a great feeling. That feeling you get when you pry open a toy that has travelled/stored unopened for years. Yet MISB sets are a finite resource. I find that while I cannot resist the allure of an unopened set I haven't yet played with, there are times I'd rather admire the handiwork and artistry in a toy's pristine packaging. Hence with more desirable sets, I usually buy one to play and display and one for storage.
