Heroica RPG - Quest #11: A Matter of Principle
Waterbrick Down replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
The lightning storm continues to interfere with Atramor's compass swinging it around in circles. -
Actually, I never made that decision, as of the moment it would damage orcs as well. But as QM if I had an orc in the party, I would probably not take any health away from him, if he chose to consume one. I think this whole thing should be left for the individual QM's to take care of in their quests. If he wants to make an enemy strong against elves fine, if he chooses to ignore the health losing effects of an item because one of his player's happens to be an orc fine. Let it be on a case by case basis and don't set a hard rule. If Cronk ends up with one of my Orc potions through a trade or something, I leave it to the QM who has Cronk in their quest next to decide if he should lose health or not. As far as unfairness, of the races, if we leave up the decision to the QM's then it's more a matter of personal decision for how the QM's will treat it, rather than another rule in the game that we have to abide by. Just some thoughts.

As the rain begins to spatter upon the cobblestones, the Party once again make their way to the fish market. Gurnam smiles as he sees the party approach. "Well, well, look what the cat dragged in. Ah, I see you've spent my money wisely haven't you rogue. You come to pay me back already? Or can I interest you in some of my other wares?" What will the Party do? -

The Party stops in the middle of the street half-way between the Apothecary and the Fish Market. The rain begins to fall. What will the Party do? -

QM Note: North is towards the top of the map. Atramor's compass begins to go around in circles, dark clouds start to gather over head and lightning flashes, creating an interference in the compass' signal. -

"Alrighty then. If you see Julian, tell him Mandrel says to keep alchemical spills away from his new turban." Atramor's compass needle points in a west, south westerdly direction. -

"Wait wait, did I tell you that both of us are liars? How about that Cronk is Wren's Favorite? No don't open that door, it leads to the doom of all do..." "Oh shut it Seymour, they figured it out." Atramor reaches to the right side door and undoes the latch. Seconds later doom free, he pulls out the Snow Ruby of Helvetia. Snow Ruby of Helvetia x1 - Quest Item Mandrel reaches into the cabinet as well, "At long last, the last jar of pickled basilisk tails. They've been in that cabinet for 2 years and Mandrel hasn't had the guts to get 'em out. Is there anything else Mandrel can do for you gentlemen?" What will the Party do next? -

"My brother would certainly pick the left hand door as it leads to the doom of all dooms" "Balderdash, I would never pick the left hand door. No matter, we all know my brother's a liar and thus he would pick the left hand door." -

"That would depend if I wanted him dead or alive." QM Note: The dark grey text corresponds to the dark grey statue which corresponds to opening the right hand door. The lighter grey text corresponds to the light grey statue which corresponds to opening the left hand door. -

Mandrel walks over to the party. "Mandrel's asked before, right means "correct" not direction." -
If we left the original rules yes it wouldn't make sense, but if we changed it the Attack/Heal to Special Damage/Spirit Gaurd maybe?

"We are imprisoned brothers of Saint Zalzabar the Barbarian turned into heathen idols" "Since when? My brother's got it all wrong, we're voodoo dolls from the Waldurkian Forest" Mandrel shouts over at the party, "You're wasting your time, that cabinet's never been locked. Mandrel has just never had the nerve to choose a door to open. Just ask those two bozo's. One of those door's will let you in, the other supposedly unleashes a doom of all dooms! One of them is always telling the truth the other is always lying, I just don't know which one is which." "My door is the right one, that rock faced buffoon is just a liar." "No my door is the right one, his leads to certain doom. Don't listen to his lies." What shall the Party do? -
Now, now, can't blame him for trying.

Atramor's search only earns him a stange look from Mandrel, but he quickly moves away to study the potion cabinet with Glorfindel. Inside Atramor spots the Snow Ruby of Helvetia, however the cabinet is locked on both sides with two latches one on the right and one on the left. "Excuse me what do you think you are doing?" "What does it look like he's doing baking a cake?" "Well I was just asking a perfectly reasonable question." "You haven't asked a reasonable question since the Orcish wars." To Atramor's suprise the two golem totems on top of the cabinet are addressing him. How shall the party reply? -
How about if the cleric is attacking it receives Special Damage and if it is healing, then it still protects against the negative effect? Well as of the moment there isn't that distinction and making effects race dependent I believe, would bring too much complexity to the game and might limit the creativity of other new players in their character creation.

"Mandrel Two Toes' is afraid not, Julian bought his hat and flew right out the door. As to the ruby, your guess is as good as Mandrel's, for all Mandrel knows, it could be behind his left ear today! You'll just have to look around, just don't break any of Mandrel's collectables." -
Theoretically you'd be fine, but it was a little complicated to include that condition. So unless we have any half-orcs in the party...

The orc hands the purchased supplies to the party. "Ah yes, Julian visited Mandrel's shop one week ago, he is one of Mandrel's favoritest customers. Mandrel never seen him so excited. He came in here and told Mandrel Two Toes all about it. However, he did not mention the Snow Ruby of Helvetia, I'd of been glad to give it to him too. That pesky ruby has a way of sneaking about this whole shop with no one ever touchig it. One day it's here on Mandrel's counter, the next it's at the bottom of the bone barrel. If you can find it, Mandrel says you can take it." The trick is that you gain back 10 points of health and then you lose 2 from the side effects. So even if you have 11/15 health and you use a potion, you only get 13/15 health back. Simply add 10 and then subtract 2, or in the example add 4 to get to full health and then subtract 2 due to the effect. Orc potions don't sit well in human stomachs, thus the loss of health but cheaper prices.

The Party proceeds to the last shop on the list, owned by one, Mandrel Two Toes. "Come in, come in. Welcome to Mandrel's shop of curious items. Please sit down. Would you like Mandrel to read your fortune perhaps? Or maybe you have heard of Mandrel's home brewed potions? What shall Mandrel get for you, well armed sirs?" "My these bandits are over confident are they not? Six to one and they're still mockin' us. Twill be there undoing I suspect." Skrall targets the Bandit (Axe) from the back row. "Any furious screamin' higher than that Althior and you'll be forcin' me to give up heroing for good and go back to watchin' my kids as a stay at home ogre. What's he payin' you to be his butler Finnegan, half the gold he makes?" Inwardly Skrall winced at his own joke, he'd left home to escape from his children and now here he was betting he'd go back to them. "Alright down to business. Mages let 'em have it with any spells you've got this round, don't worry about yer ether fer now. I'd rather have you alive and safe in the back row, then knocked out and full of useless ether in the front. Especially you Arasmyth, I admire your courage but that chain wieldin' wench could knock you out with one hit, due to yer previous injuries." Battle Order: Althior Namyrra Skrall Dyric Bob Arasmyth OOC: Stat wise, my weapon should be poisoned and Namyrra should be at full health as we both used our venom and potion respectively. -
My apologies to those in Quest 11, this week has been a killer with classes and all. The next shop should hopefully be up in about 8 hours.
