  1. I think that using a real map of the Caribbean unfortunately however unrestricted we want it, does restrict it. For example, Member A makes a scene of a pirate hideout on Cuba surrounded by lots of palm trees. Member B is a know-it-all and points out that Cuba does not have palm trees. (I have no idea if this is the case!). Could lead to all kinds of arguments as to whether this is allowed. However, that said, the Caribbean is the perfect setting. I personally think we could use the map and just change the names of places? This would give us some room to maneuver while us knowing roughly what we're aiming for with the original Caribbean. I think this is also why we need "Redcoats" and "Armada" as factions and not "Britain" and "Spain" - having a specific nation gives a mindset which even subconsciously must be adhered to. Also arises the problem if the Spaniard helmets being from the wrong time period! By all means we could say that "Redcoats are loosely based on the British, Bluecoats France, and the Armada on Spain". This again would give a basic idea of what they should be like without restricting it purely to those original nations. Beautiful things can be achieved in a world that is free for imagination and only loose guidelines. I also agree that this probably wouldn't need a massive amount of policing or even competitions and could just be directed really by whichever direction those taking part take it - MOCs that inspire imagination and replies would almost pull our little Caribbean world in a direction for others to base their MOCs around. This is a really exciting project and I hope that one day it might be implemented
  2. Nice to see a trade ship! I particually like the Minotaur head for a figurehead! I like it as it has the "classic pirates" feel, without actually being pirates!
  3. Well, I have nothing against it being realistic, if someone has the time and the bricks to put into making an ultra realistic frigate for example then all speed ahead! I think that's up to the people contributing to this as to what style as an individual they would go for - comical/cartoony or realistic. I certainly think that factions should definitively be lego-based and not real nations such as Britain and France however - thats more my thoughts on the line of realism.
  4. Wow! Words cant explain how impressive this is! If TLC ever get around to releasing their own Flying Dutchman chances are it will look tiny compared to this one! Well done!
  5. I quite like the idea of something along these lines, but agree that it would be very difficult to do something like GoH without it looking somewhat dwarfed! When I first joined the forum, I remember the whole redcoats vs bluecoats thing was just finishing I think. It all looked rather fun! Perhaps something like that could again be done as a compromise, to encourage people to dabble more in "classic" pirates for a while as opposed to the increasingly popular historically accurate ships etc. Fun MOC's of Redcoats blowing up bluecoats (and visa-versa) are the way to go in my opinion!
  6. Glad you found out the answer! Adventure... a fitting name for a pirate ship!
  7. I think too think that the Skulls Eye Schooner would be the best option for a like for like firing of broadsides. However, though it probably wouldnt be able to completely sink or force a surrender, I think that the Renegade Runner might be able to cause significant damage to the IFS and put her out of action for a while due to repairs. She would surely be able to swiftly manouver and get a few shots away at the IFS's stern or bows before the IFS is able to turn her guns to face the RR. Even facing a full broadside, the IFS guns are rather fixed (I think) and so aiming at a small target would be difficult. In short, the SES would be the most likely to come out victorious, but the RR might be able to do a fair bit of damage before being hit
  8. Mine are probably set around the mid-1700's although could even be headed later than that towards French Revolutionary times - even though I'm completely aware that this is in no way the "Golden Age" of piracy. My pirates are set completely in their own fantasy world and thus the specific time era doesn't matter too much to me
  9. Rather unhelpfully I remember looking for this a while ago - other than consistent mentions of it being the first ship to fly the "Jolly Rodger", no sources anywhere seem to state the name. good luck in finding it out, and if you do, be sure to let me know!
  10. It does seem a logical explanation... although its not like axing Space Police to make way for Star Wars, Castle to make way for Lord of the Rings, or Pirates to make way for Pirates of the Caribbean. The two are so different that it seems odd that Pirates would be seen as a threat to Star Wars - especially considering how insanely popular Star Wars is. Surely, other than having to pay off the license fee for Star Wars, surely it wouldnt matter profit wise if a kid chose to buy a £40 Pirate set instead of a £40 Star Wars set? As I say, I agree that its the most likely! It still seems an odd tactic to me however.
  11. I suppose that if the pirates theme was outselling other themes, they might have felt that by dropping it for a while people would be forced to spend their money on other products - but if a theme is definetly selling well... why risk losing products by dropping it? Even if they'd just kept it as the same wave for a few years while boosting other themes? I would say that they were perhaps running out of places to go with it - but surely they could have just created new pirates or tried a new "enemy" faction (or recycled one). Castle has been going all these years with various incarnations - although admittedly LOTR will see an end to that one for the forseable future unfortunately. I think the most likely explanation is that TLC may, when saying that pirates was the most popular theme, have meant that as a whole the theme was the most popular over the years - not necessarily the last wave with the spaniards however?
  12. Though I have expressed my dislike of the price and also feel that there is indeed a limit to playability of many of the sets, I also do agree that any pirates are better than no pirates! Everyone is completely entitled to their own opinion, and if people really do enjoy PotC sets then thats brilliant and I really hope they continue to enjoy them! If people dont like them, they will vote with their feet, so to speak. I just hope that if they do so, it wont lead to LEGO dropping pirates all together as that would be disasterous!
  13. A point very well made Captain Fortune. You hit the nail on the head. I personally dislike the price of the PoTC sets, and I also felt that there was something else missing, and that's it. Play-ability. They are indeed very restricted. I bought the Fountain of Youth a while ago, simply because I wanted Barbossa's uniform, and Blackbeard. The fountain itself really didnt appeal to me - other than keeping that and the plastic waterfall for display purposes, there wasn't really a huge amount of things I could do with it really. As people have pointed out, there aren't really factions as such. More individuals I would say. Yeah there's A couple of Blackbeard's crew, a couple of Soldiers, a few of Davy Jones' lot and the odd one from the Pearl, but I wouldnt really class them as factions. The British should have appeared a lot more. Two token soldiers and a privateer Barbossa don't really cut it for me. The British appeared in all four films in one way or another. Surely they could have taken a few Jack Sparrows out of the sets and replaced them with a soldier, sailor, Norrington, the governor, Lord whatshisface or any number of British characters, as appropriate. The POTC game is so beautiful, with many characters, clear factions and wonderful locations - I don't see quite why the first wave of PotC had to be so limited - I know that licensed sets are always a tad more expensive, but the amount that your getting for your money seems quite small. I do like the concept of PotC as LEGO, love the films and if they made more sets which I felt were better value for money, I'd most certainly buy them - but otherwise I'd like Classic-Pirates back. Little rant over :)

  15. If not, where did that cannon come from? I ask because when buying a bulk lot off ebay once one of these appeared with it, and I had no idea which set it was from! Very nice review. I remember being a tiny child and wanting this set - I think it went out of production before I managed to gather enough pocket money together though! I like the fact that they gave the sentry a different hat to other bluecoats of the time in that it wasn't a tricorn or a shako! that was a nice touch!
  16. Nice mixture of pics there Caughron - Might be worth putting them in the MOC forum where they'll get more attention than on page 170 of this thread! Just catching up on this thread so a bit late spotting the news about the series not being continued for the time being. Personally I'm not a big fan of the POTC sets mainly due to the pricetag on almost all sets being very overpriced in my opinion. Which if it is indeed true that they haven't been selling well that could be a large factor. My fear is that if the majority of these sets haven't sold well for whatever reason, TLC might not be so inclined to grace us with another wave of "classic'ish" pirates like the '09 series. "We've done POTC, and that didnt sell well, so no one will buy normal pirates either!" could well be the logic that would appear. If they were to do another wave at some point of POTC, I'd like them to make the privateer vessel from POTC4 - I think it would be possible for LEGO to make a decent looking "smaller" vessel that therefore wouldn't cost £85 or £100. I'm thinking more around £50-60. Also, it would give us more imperial stuff to play with! Huzzar!
  17. Wow, a civil war army - that looks really cool! Where did you get the swords for the musketeers from?
  18. Thanks once again for all the positive replies folks - it makes it all worth it!
  19. Hi folks! I can now confirm that filming for episode eight has finally commenced. The episode will feature ships The Sardines Revenge, HMS Uncapturable, atleast two bluecoat ships and those pesky foreign pirates! Large scale sea battle ahoy! I'm hoping to have a trailer ready within two weeks and the full episode out in about a month or so. Watch this space!
  20. Thanks for all the positive feedback! It is much appreciated! I certainly am. Another long-overdue episode of Brickington is my next project - I'm just in the process of repairing ships that got somewhat damaged during moving house - then I'll probably do another short random film like this one before another episode of Brickington. That's my plan anyway which could well change! Thanks again for the comments folks!
  21. Hehe glad you like it Sir Sven! Its such a nice idea to build your character in such a great game... yet so poorly implemented both in terms of bugs and pointlessness that it was crying out to have a brickflick made about it!
  22. Thanks Zilcho! Brickington filming is about to get underway (I just need to find where all the bits went when I moved house!)
  23. Thats really sweet that you get to share Lego as a whole family event! I hope in the future that I can do something similar (although I'm not going to show the missus the video for the same reason as what happened to Sir Sven!), albiet with my own secret collection somewhere thats mine and mine alone! Seriously though, it sounds really lovely, you will have to let us know how it all goes! You'll have quite the collection once all those are built! Welcome to Eurobricks!
  24. Glad you both enjoyed it! Generally, in previous flicks such as Brickington Sails Forth I've always gone for different voices for that reason, to make it clear who's talking - in BSF there are four main characters with four very different voices. On this occasion there is less variation admittedly, as I was aiming for the good old stereotypical british posh stiff-upper-lip bravado but that does indeed mean they've ended up sounding quite similar in the end! Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated
  25. Hi guys, Here's a very small MOC scene. Its quite basic but if you watch the 50 second clip at the end you'll see what its about! So whats going on? Watch the short clip below! Thanks for viewing and let me know what you think!
