You love it or hate it I suppose, I think it's the ultimate ghostship and I like ghostships. But if you give it some nicer colors, white sails and some work on the prow I believe you can make a pretty realistic galleon out of it. The Flying DUtchman is like a ghostship version of a ship like the Vasa or the Batavia. Oh and don't trust what this article sais http://lego-customs.wikia.com/wiki/6234_Flying_Dutchman Someone made that up, it's confusing because the author describes it as if it's a real set but if you look closely he sais it's not real himself. Why ? I have no Idea
-
Sweet, the stern worked out great, there's great acces to the interior as well, love it.
-
The technique loses its charm when building bigger it seems. The hull improvement is a good idea though, bricklink it is ! Go ahead, I'd love to see what you make out of it

Yeah, I had given up hope for an official Flying Dutchman when those characters appeared with the Black Pearl. It's as if they didn't plan to sell a Flying Dutchman set at all. Anyway, the set should atleast include Davy Jones and Will Turner as they both play an 'important' role considering the ghostship. Jack Sparrow is in every set so why would this one be different ? Ofcourse there must be a crewmember, hopefully a new one but it could as well be the hammershark dude or the shellhead guy again. Maybe even Bootstrap Bill. If there are no other sets then the FD coming Cutler Becket has to be in it. I can imagine the FD to have 7 minifigures, the QAR has 7 so why not ? But what I'm more interested in is how the ship itself will look like, making a decent Flying Dutchman that can be sold at a decent price is not so evident. There are so many details to consider, most of them will probably be ignored to keep the cost low. I hope they give the ship two decks, like the Imperial Flagship
-
The fleshies caused a rumble in my collection as well, I keep it simple, there can only be one kind on one ship. So there's no way you'll see Jack Sparrow and Captain Brickbeard / redbeard on the same ship.

[pid][/pid] 116B All right, this is either madness or brilliant, I'll let you decide which one. It's not entirey finished, it need some details such as lanterns and some interior work. Brickshelf gallery (once public) Have you ever heard of the theory 'making it small to make the rest look bigger' ? I have been reorganizing my "shipyard", many ships I was building never got posted before I demolished them to provide parts for my Flying Dutchman. I'm considering demolishing my Big Black Pearl so I can use the parts on Din's Fire which will need them to replace its gray parts (gray parts for the Flying Dutchman). As a replacement for my Black Pearl I made this smaller version (I'm considering giving it an accurate sail plan as well). Anyway, I made more tiny ships, the first one being my trading ship (already posted here a while ago). and a tiny ship-of-the-line (which I will post here later when it's finished). (And believe it or not, this one started as a medieval siege weapon). Can you imagine the possibilities with these ships ? small ships make the port look bigger and ofcourse it's a lot more practical to fill your shelf . So guess what, I made these small ships to make my big ship look bigger! Madness ? Or brilliant ?

Yes, that could work, you'll need quite some jumpers and tiles but it will look better I think. You don't have to use the hinge plates like in Captain Greenhair's tutoral, your hinge bricks are fine too
-
I doubt the Flying Dutchman will be bigger than the Imperial Flagship. At best it will have 3 cannons, I bet the whole set won't be much more then some hulls, an organ, triple cannons, Kraken hammer, masts with sails and some minifigures. Everything that the Dutchman needs to be the Dutchman but nothing more. In other words pretty much similar to the official black pearl, which is a ship with black sails and figurehead but other than that... .
-
here's not much to say at this point but I don't like the inverted slopes you used on the hull midsection, they make the hull curve in an odd manner, you might want to pick a different part for that zone.

I have build an 8 wide ship a while ago, maybe the design can be of use (the picture is a link to a mocpage where you can download LDD instructions, below, just above the comment section) EDIT : Ah I see Skipper already linked to my ship
-
Very nice, I hope the official Flying Dutchman will be something near this Almost the whole weather deck is completely wrong but it's nice too Did you work on an interior ? If so I'd love to see it
-
Yeah, just like the videogame version has, I considered using those arch pieces so I did a little search at bricklink, turns out they are very expensive in the colors I need (gray and dark gray), I tried other colors but they were either also expensive, too few or not suited in my colorscheme That's what I'm trying to do now and you're right, it is hard to be accurate Plates ? you mean like this technique ? the first option would be the easiest indeed, maybe I should consider bringing in some bluish (dark) gray but personally I think old gray and new (bluish) gray don't go well together. There's a lot of experimenting to be done.
-
Nicely done, very interesting that there's no poop deck (deck on top of the cabin). I like those sails, keep it up
-
nah, someone made that up, besides look at the set number, 6234 is an excisting set already http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6234 That costum wiki is full of nonsense.
-
Interesting idea, making a matchup with the same budget, so you can as well get a combination of other ships, like three old imperial flagships against one new IFS. I don't think the IFS stands a chance against multiple ships

Last update for 2011; I need to buy more parts, the problem is that I don't know which parts as I haven't figered out a design for the galleries yet. Maybe YOU can help me with that. as a reference these pictures might be usefull; I'll be concentrating on other matters the coming two months so until then I won't be able to make progress in the build Life gets in the way.

It's still a mystery why they didn't produce more sets, only thing I can think of is that they waited to see how well the first series of POTC sets sell and then decide wether to launch or not launch a second wave... the decided not too I guess ? Anyway, I've given up hope on a second wave of potc sets, we would have heard of it if there were coming more, how realistic is a 5th POTC movie anyway ?
-
I don't care wether classic pirates return or another wave of POTC, as long as there's an actual pirate line. There have been dark years when the classic pirate line ended, many years passed before the new pirates came, atleast 10 years ! If I would have been born a few years earlier I could have bought the Black Seas Barracuda and Skull's eye Schooner or any other classic pirate set, I waited years for a new pirate line to come but it didn't so I had to go through a lot of trouble to get my hands on one of the classic pirate ship sets (yes, I'm still frustrated about it). I just hope they keep the pirate line alive.

it is ? that is very interesting, I'm from Ghent as well maybe I should make a bluecoat - redcoat battle at Gravensteen, as far as I know noone ever made that castle in the brick.
-
The illustrations (LDD images) are great, they really make your tutoral easier to follow, very interesting as well.
-
A very nice ship, it's not the most accurate since it has more masts than the real one but so what ? more masts make a better ship I love the cabin interior picture; it looks so spacy, keep it up
-
Wow, looking great so far, I wonder how much it would have costed you in total (two black pearls and bricklink orders) to get it to the final result. IMO the doors on the forecastle don't fit very well, maybe if you only take only one door piece instead of a pair so you have a door opening of 2 studs width instead of 4 on each side. The stern looks great. Keep it up
-
planty of material for tutorals I'm looking forward to your tutoral(s)

Bart nicely added the decks names (according to him) on my interior sketch (and I find it logical) As you can see the main deck is not the weather deck in this case, also you'll see that the Dutchman is definitely not a frigate. The reason I consider the main deck to be a gun deck is because it obviously designated to carry guns and they run its entire length (except for the galleries ofcourse) the total arnement of the Flying Dutchman consist out of: 20 guns on lower gun deck, 18 guns on main deck, 14 guns on the weather deck (all decks exposed to the outside including forecastle, well deck and quarter deck) 2 swivel guns on the poop deck here's a wip shot of the build, I'm convinced that this ship has 2 gun decks (at least). let me know where I might be wrong
-
Thank you very much, this is exactly what I need, the well deck it is since I'm building from teh waterline I didn't bother much about drawing the draft though when I see this I must say it would be cool if I could build the complete ship...
