  1. Functionality, you can build much more and faster if you ignore the different colors, not everyone has a sorted collection, it takes time to look for the part in the right color (there's also the uncertainty of wether you still have a part in that color or not). As for kids, they have a lot of imagination, they can see what we don't and when you don't have a lot of lego you don't have much choice but to use a rainbow colorscheme. I don't post 'rainbow' creations but I do build them, usually prototypes (purely functional), also for economical purpose, if I intend to build something large which would require a Bricklink order I want to know in advance which specific parts I'll need. Interesting question by the way, I'm interested in what other people think as well.
  2. Recreating scenes with ships is not always easy, especially when we're talking about big ships but I do agree that it would be nice to see some more on-board action. I always try to pose some minifigures on every ship. Now, about that sextant...
  3. There are a few tutorals around here, http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=54245 http://www.eurobrick...?showtopic=3351 But I use recycled paper (paper that's not white but tan/brown -colored) and I use a pencil to draw some lines on them, my sails are not of the best quality (it's just paper after all, they're fragile) )but they look decent enough.
  4. 23 x 12 baseplates (32x32 baseplates) so in studs that's 736 x 384 studs (I hope I've got my numbers right).
  5. I couldn't find it in the cannon index, but there's a rather tricky connection featuring robot arms stuck in the 1x2x3 slope bricks, not possible in LDD I think
  6. The layout was gigantic, my Flying Dutchman looked so small between those big forts. There's isn't really a creative aspect about an army but everyone would admit that the sight of that army was impressive , I had the privilege to pose a great deal of the minifigures . I can only encourage that. Every add is welcome, space (as in 'room') will not be an Issue, There will be more room than we need .
  7. My first Technic MOC, it was a 4x4 with independant suspension and a gearbox but eventhough it had an RC buggymotor It didn't move, it could steer but not return-to-center... Since then I realized it never worked because of the gear ratio, the RC Buggy motor had to be geared down, nowadays I manage to build cars that really work, driving and steering by Remote (because I'm smarter now and I have better parts) But allas they are never finished...
  8. I'm definitely a Mocpages fan, it's very accessible for a MOCer to spread his/her creations, in fact it's where I started in the online Lego community. I'm also on Flickr but the primary reason for that is to stay updated with some of those awesome creations of other builders that cannot be found on mocpages. If I had to choose it would be mocpages, after all I'm a MOCer and mocpages is focused on showing off MOCs. However, the last years I'm much more active here at EB (partially because I found out how the deeplinking pictures thing works but mostly because It's so fun in here ), If there's one bad thing I could say about mocpages it would be the rating competition, every member can rate a creation with 1 to 5 points but those ratings are not always relevant. It has been worked on and has improved since a few years so it might still get better. Another thing, the mocpages community is also slightly censored and restricted in what you can post or can say (for a child-friendly environment) , flickr is not, wether this is a positive or a negative thing...
  9. I'm also a big fan of the hammocks, I'm not so sure wether I like the gun-line overhang or not but I like the bow.
  10. That's right, the source of inspiration .
  11. Update: There are now Building Instructions available, atleast I uploaded the LDD file: AquaShark.lxf It has some slight changes, the backfin and tail to be more precise, they may look better.
  12. I love it, I'm currently very much into submarines, gongratulations on your win.
  13. Thanks. No I haven't, because my design wouldn't support the iconic aquashark canopy and fin with the aquasharks logo... and I barely have any of the pieces in blue
  14. It looks terrific, good job on that pedestal, I like the waterline, a great compensation for the prefab hulls.
  15. It's a general problem I guess, I haven't been able to upload anything at mocpages too, I was going to propose to add a function for pictures hosted at brickshelf, (like the way it used to work on mocpages years ago before mocpages had its own uploading device) but I just noticed brickshelf is down too at the moment .
  16. (The background image was found here) The AquaShark, a one-person submersible, for undetected approach and inflicting critical damage to larger seacraft. It is equiped with two (mini)torpedoes (the shark's eyes) and a double harpoon cannon (for penetrating the hull of an enemy ship). I'm very happy with how its mouth (water jet) turned out (that's a spoiler from a racecar). I'm happy with the tail as well, except for that black hinge plate, I wish I could replace that by another color, yellow if possible. AquaShark docked in secret underwater base. Accessing the interior isn't easy I have to admit (it's pretty hard to get a minifigure in it by only using the top hatch). So I did a little cut-away to show it off anyway. Another picture of the underwater dock: And for the fans a comparison picture with a classic Aquashark: I loved the Aquasharks, dating from the time when a human lego minifigure could still be a bad guy . More pictures can be found in my Brickshelf Gallery (along with pictures of the first version and the hangar). Building Instructions can be found at the end of this mocpage (LDD format). And while you're here you can support this Cuusoo project as well, it's a submarine, not this one but one I'd really like to have. Edit: this submarine is now also on Cuusoo.
  17. Thanks, I always knew that...wait what? Yes, I felt there was something out of place with the headrails, a second and third headrail, I'll look into that, Most of my ships suffer from this issue . Thanks, I'm glad you like the rigging, I wasn't so sure about it myself.
  18. I updated the ship, I renamed her the HMS Marianne. it has now three courses of sails on both masts, I drew some lines on the sails, extra gunports were added (fake ones though) and I opened the gun deck. The HMS Marianne will be ready to engage in battle with Farore's Wind once again. I'm thinking about equiping that ship with new sails as well.
  19. Very interesting, I have my doubts though about the strenght of the hinge structure, atleast it doesn't seem like a good Idea to hold the ship buy the hull sides... I could be wrong ofcourse, my experience with this type of hull is zero after all. I can only support detailed pictures, I may try one too then my own WIP brick-built ship turned out to be a big failure anyway.
  20. Thanks No problem, you can always vary in the color scheme (although I do think the dark red / black looks great). Good luck Well spotted, interior is still a major issue on my small-hull ships . I split hulls to re-combine to this one, which reminds me, there even is a tutorial here at Classic Pirates, Splitting Hulls (I used the one from the old imperial flagship and the one from the Timecruisers ship, at the same time I combined a copletely dark gray hull. Anyway, I would have prefered a totally brown hull but unfortunatly these don't exist for small type hulls, I do know it's possible to make a completely black hull but I have yet to come in possesion of those hulls.
  21. The fort is bigger than I thought, some rocks to place it on would indeed be perfect, I see many great details, like the stairway in the tower and the sliding prison door and plenty of bluecoat flags . Keep it up, it's gonna be good with a port and all.
  22. Yes, let's see if your fortified port city can stand up to my fleet . Almost forgot, I took some pictures that give a clear view of its construction for you, check the spoiler at the end of the first post. I hope they help you in making your own ship. I agree, particulary when I place minifigures on the ship it becomes obvious that the planks are too small. You might still need the uniform .
  23. [pid][/pid] 147D The Tournament of Retrebution is over, it's time to lose the uniform and return to piracy But that nice first prize is getting a good spot in my cabin. The cabin of my last latest ship ofcourse, I present you; the Zephyr. A 12 gun pirate brig with a color scheme similar to that of those fancy frigates of Captain Green Hair and Bonaparte Napoleon (see Captain Green Hair's tutorial). The tumblehome technique however is my simplified version like I used before on my previous ships; (the Beauty, Merchant Brig, Barquentine and HMS Intersector). This ship started as an experiment but eventually it became a finished ship after all. (You might have seen it in my round 2 TOR entry, it had black-striped sails then). The deck of this ship consists out of brick bricks, so far I haven't seen those used for this purpose but that's probably because they aren't that great for it anyway, they make it look out of scale. I saw Legonardo using brick bricks for the walls of a cabin, that looked good. (Just incase you don't know, brick bricks have two different sides, one side are bricks, the other side are planks (how I like to call them atleast). It's an experiment, this ship has 126 brick bricks in it, I know that because it are all of my brick bricks and I bought those on only two different occasions (one being part of LUGbulk). I'm more happy with how the cabin turned out, particulary the galleries. The name is Connor (Assassins Creed reference). Sigh, my rigging really is outdated , While building this ship I've never considered it a keeper so It wouldn't have been worth the effort to equip it with costum rigging (frustrating work with ropes and knots ). But now that it's finished I kind of love it. I hope you like it, more pictures can be found in my brickshelf gallery. I will also bring this ship to Belug's yearly event; Brickmania Wetteren (4 and 5 May), along with other ships (among them the Flying Dutchman with a few modifications) and a small port (which served well as decor for my third round TOR entry), It will all be part of a huge pirate layout.
  24. Well done, I liked how King Kahuka looked after the battle . I still haven't noticed what's in the bag though .
  25. Nice, I loved the bush passing along, I like the fort, it looks more than a decor, do you have any more pictures of that ?
