Pros and Cons of the various types of trains.
Rijkvv replied to Madcat2000's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I've seen jayhurst's steam switcher, but I still think Power Functions are not compact enough. It's impossible to create something like 4563, and I think that's one of the mayor disadvantages, together with the need of reload the battery sometimes. It's a big improvement when you look to the RC system with its big RC base. But I think 9V is still better. The tracks are cheaper, but what if straight ones and curves are sold together? The whole point of cheap tracks is over when you only use half of the tracks (the straight ones). -
Unfortunately I still don't own the set, so I'm not sure if it's honest to say when I haven't seen it in real. According to pictures from reviews, I go for the theatre. The garage is also great, and I love the S.N.O.T. window. But a theatre is more unique, we haven't seen many before.

4559. It isn't very realistic, but at the time I loved the streamlined front.

Seeing the post from 5150 I remember another advantage of the 1991 ports: they had the same size containers, so they could be changed. 6352 is an excellent set that fits well with the harbor, I think.

I totally agree with you. I don't have much space, and because of that my layout will be a simple one. Maybe there is space to create a large shunting yard, but then there will not be any space left to add roads except for a single straight one. If I had room for a bigger layout, then it would be a so-called complex layout.

Now taking YOUR ideas for the future of LEGO Pirates theme

I also want to see less cartoony sails. And better designed yards. I think the design of Brickbeard's Bounty is weak and not very realistic, yust look at the ships of the first Pirates theme, I think they look much better. -
Wow. This looks really great. I agree with Commander Rob. I too wish I had one of those.

A monorail set. Special parts are expensive, and not likely that TLG will ever release new Monorail parts, but look what I found at Brickshelf (not mine): Folder. A brick-built system is very easy to expand, and the costs are lower, because no new pieces have to be introduced.

I would like to see the RC rail crossing again. I also think of other track pieces, like three-way points and the modified points seen in Railbricks. The flexi-track is useful to connect small things that don't fit exactly, but is still not usable to create wide curves I think. At least are they very ugly. Since 1996 the passenger train has always been a small set, with a freight train a big set. I think it should be the opposite, cause freight trains are easier to expand and often create more play value. I would like to see a small freight train below 100

Maybe a big treasure island, with a cave and a place to hide the treasure. Here is what I mean. I know there already have been islands, but I think none like the Playmobil one. -
Count me in please.

I voted 1991. I partly disagree with those who say the 2007 sets are more realistic. The dimensions and the shape of the new ship are more realistic, but the platform pieces of the 1991 sets look much more realistic than the weak-looking bridge pieces used in the 2007 harbour. Another thing I don't like in the new set is the truck. I rarely saw a truck with container directly at the back at a harbour, it is always a truck with trailer, where a much longer container fits. The 1991 truck is small, but it's at least a truck with trailer. Last thing I don't like about the new set is the ship's hull. Sure, with this it's easier to design big ships, capable of carrying 6-wide containers (that are way too short), but to me it looks like it's a Tupperware box. This way every single ship with different dimensions needs a new hull design (and mold). With the 1991 bow pieces it was easy to build ships the way you want. You're welcome.

Never tested a train with two motors, but I think two are more powerful. If I look at big 8-wide 9V powered engines that have to haul a long train, almost everytime the engine has two 9V motors.

I like the 2002 ones the best. They are very useful I think. In a city they can be less realistic. I will solve this problem with adding tiles. I agree with Rick, maybe some additional baseplates that fit with the current ones.

+1. I agree with both of you. More ships, and the 1991 ones were awesome. I hope new boats and ships will have brick-built hulls. At least not the big Tupperware hulls they use these days, that are useless for anything else. That sounds really good. It would be a great set to start, and as you mentioned also great for AFOLs to expand their layout.

Because it will be expensive. I like to see both as well, at least when there is no fantasy, but I don't think TLG will release two historical themes. Not in a single year. Maybe they will release both as factions in one theme, but that sounds not very likely to me.

Best and worst Lego set of the 2000's
Rijkvv replied to alexrider7's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Best: 8275 Motorized Bulldozer. Worst: any Galidor or Bionicle stuff. -
I don't understand all your abbreviations.

Welcome to Eurobricks!

Is it a RC or 9V lay-out? If it's RC, the crossing can be very useful, because it's very compact and you can keep all the long straight parts of the layout. I've edited my lay-out, see below. The red supports are just an identification for me where to place the poles for the overhead wire.

Congratulations Erdbeereis!

I don't get it. If there are more reads compared to replies, the replies that are posted would contain less off-topic posts. Or am I wrong?

They are more expensive. Don't forget TLG is not the only one who has to get money from sold items. The company from the license (for example Disney) also wants to see money. Another disadvantage I think is that there is less room to design sets. Everything has to be based at something. A LEGO designer can build a beautiful space station, but if it never was in a Star Wars movie, book, comic or series, it will never be released as a Star Wars set. And then the chance it will be released at all is little.
