Heroica RPG - Quest #132: The Clans Under the Mountain
Sandy replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
"Here we go, then..." Ellaria said, swallowing the stage fright that started to creep in on her. Ellaria walked to the dwarves, trying to get confidence and poise in her stride. "Excuse me, gentle dwarves. Is your vessel headed to the dwarven cities under Mount Ulysses, by chance? If so, me and my entourage would like to ask a passage with you. I am Doctor Arbour from the Guild of Invision in Eubric, and these people are my guardians. We at the guild are interested in selling our newest products at your cities, but we of course have to familiarize ourselves with the demographic first. What do you say?" -
Okay, so certain animals can hold onto something. Point taken. Despite Zepher's cool "forest friend Heroica" setting, all player characters still need to be minifigure-based just to keep everyone on at least some common ground. It's a coincidence, that's all. No NRA conspiracy behind it. Zepher is right, at least what comes to my hunter NPCs - they prowl, so it is easy to explain their presence just about anywhere.

I hope it's not the same reasons this one guy had, who quit the game because magic was against his religion. He somehow realized it only after he had signed into the game... I still stand by those words. Animals other than apes do not have opposable thumbs, so it's impossible for them to swing swords.

That's what I'm currently contemplating now. Ether would only be spent if the healing or spell is effective, so clerics would not be penalized for healing people who are already at full health, nor mages for casting spells on enemies that are immune to the element. It would require a new kind of thinking from the QMs, but it might be the best solution to balance ether-based classes.

Heroica RPG - Quest #132: The Clans Under the Mountain
Sandy replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
"What if we posed as a merchants? Like the bunny said, the dwarves are willing to buy anything they can't make themselves, and I'm pretty sure alchemical products are one of those things. How would you feel if I pretended to be an envoy of the Guild of Invision, interested in establishing a trading deal with the dwarven communities. You three could be my bodyguards. That's the most plausible background story I can come up with, at least." -
That's pretty much the whole point of having ether cost in the first place. But I will consider applying ether cost per target into the game mechanics. It's going to be a big change that will affect just about every job class with ether out there...

Heroica RPG - Quest #132: The Clans Under the Mountain
Sandy replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
"Yes, I believe we are ready." She nudged Tesni playfully. "Aren't we, Miss Party Leader?" -
The only one restricting your roleplaying here is you. "I don't play ether-based classes"... Pfth! And I'm sorry to say that Lind is far from the first "rogue with a heart of gold" this game has seen.
-
That's on purpose. Shield-rolls are supposed to be battle-savers - they can change the tide of the battle. I don't know if changing the ether cost for all Shield-skills punishes ether-users too much... And Myrddyn is right: while mages can always resort to melee combat if their ether runs out (except for Sage), healing with ether is pretty much the only forte clerics have. If Shield-skills would start consuming more ether, I would probably have to implement alternative Shield-skills for situations where the party is already at full health - it wouldn't be fair if a cleric was punished for rolling Shield several times at the start of a battle by being drained out of ether before anyone needed healing to begin with. At least the 5 ether per revival would only be consumed if someone needed reviving...
-
But it does. It's 5 ether per revival. My first suggestion was 1 ether per revival, while originally it was just flat-out 1 ether for the whole shebang. Except in the beginning I don't think any of the Shield-skills cost ether at all.
-
That's exactly the point of the ether cost - you can't use the skill endlessly without gulping down a tonic every once in a while. Power should come at a cost, and I'm trying to promote that more. I also agree with JimBee that similar abilities should have the same cost throughout the board. Druids shouldn't be more potent at revival than the higher classes, Necromancer and Prophet, and this is a neat solution for that.
-
I get your point, though. What if Chrysopoeia would randomly double the value of one treasure item in the inventory? That way the Alchemist would benefit from having one such item, but not a whole hoard of them.

Heroica RPG - Quest #132: The Clans Under the Mountain
Sandy replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
"That sounds tricky!" Ellaria gasped, raising her eyebrows. "Pretend to not be interested in mythril in the least, but try to find out everything we can about it... Well, our best option is to do some heroic deeds to win over some friends over there, and hope they blabber all we need to know to us. One more question: does the dwarven caravan know who we are, or should we start the charade immediately?" -
Alright, after taking your input in consideration, here's what I'm considering for the changes to job classes. I'll make the adjustments over the weekend, so now is your last chance to say something about them. Shaman: Blood Ritual costs 1 ether. Druid: Roots of Life costs 5 additional ether per revival. Evoker: Summoned spirits cause damage equal to 2x summoner’s level. Minstrel: Nanny’s Lullaby removed, Battle Songs cost either 5 or 10 ether. Sound of Music includes attack against all enemies + free random battle song. Dragoon: Mistrust removed. Pet dragon’s health is 30+Dragoon’s level. Necromancer: Raise Army’s revivals costs 5 ether per revival. Cannoneer: Track Down trait replaced by Perquisite to Dain Almight’s Bomb Shelter. BOMBARD adds the bomb’s power, element and effect to the attack. Barrage uses the same chosen bomb three consecutive times (if bomb was not chosen, three attacks against the target). CRAFT BOMB recreates the last bomb that was used in BOMBARD or Barrage. Alchemist: CHRYSOPOEIA doubles value of treasure items. Beast Warrior: Beast Unleashed causes bleeding with each consecutive hit. Weather Mage: MIST causes additional ”misty” weather that affects all combatants during the next round. High Cleric: Hallowed Ascension costs ether equal to the amount of heroes. Archmage: Magic Cataclysm costs ether equal to the amount of enemies. Mime: Cannot use equipment that are unique to opposite gender, another race or specific character. Prophet: Alea Iacta Est revival costs 5 additional ether per revival
-
The rules for this game were adapted from the original Heroica boardgame, so you can just readapt those for a tabletop version.
-
QM Note: I believe you should be posting actions for Khorne over the weekend, as well.

Heroica RPG - Quest #132: The Clans Under the Mountain
Sandy replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
Ellaria tapped her lips in contemplation. "So, I assume that since the dwarven clans are not welcoming to outsiders, we have to sneak our way into the caravan? And once inside the mountain, should we stay out of sight and eavesdrop all we can, or do you reckon we can move freely? I know we aren't the most covert bunch Heroica has to offer... I still remember the time in Strivvi when I had to stealthily climb a ladder while wearing a flowy dress - that did not go very smoothly." -
I use Photobucket, and pay for the full version so I have all the space I need for my pictures. I have thousands of pics in Heroica folders alone... :blushed:
-
No, it takes quadruple damage, since both types are vulnerable to one element but not strong against either. Come on, the elemental modifiers aren't rocket science...
-
Not me, at least. Feel free to introduce them - as long as their names are not anagrams of the archdemons.
