Electrical Questions
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
133 views and not a single answer? Am I the only one trying to 'resuscitate' a seized motor? -
We all have our own reasons why we use Lego, whether it's a distraction, a passion for gears, or replicating whatever we learned in college. Welcome aboard, and thanks for sharing your 'perspective'. You might find the link below 'humbling' and for sure you'll be able to identify with many of us, as we all have few things in common ... http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=86895

Some of this information might be available elsewhere, though I looked a bit, but thought It would be nice to 'review/refresh' what we already know, and possibly get some new insight from those who've never shared their experience. 1. The old 9V motors do seize and many people have reported this mishap. However, no one (I could find) has explained why this happens and if there was a way to fix this. 2. Old 9V mini-motor - notorious for failing, dis-assembly feasible, but repaired units do not last very long as permanent magnet tends to pulverise and jam motor from inside. 3. Light Bricks - How to open and replace battery? 4. PF lights: one light dead - How to repair? 5. RCX Remote no longer works - Nothing wrong with the remote, all you need to do is reflash the yellow RCX brick, and voila! PS. I know my way with electrical/electronic components, but a different perspective/experience would certainly be welcome.

Who are you calling 'Kids' ? .... grown-up AFOLS who are possessive/protective of their bricks? I did? I was merely voicing a 'personal' opinion The next thing I'd need to do would be to use Phonetic Punctuation ... ... a la Victor Borge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bpIbdZhrzA

There was a thread a while back about parts (and colors) that were never released in an official set, yet somehow made by TLG ( for prototyping) and sold to few lucky individuals. As for officially released parts, I have many of the early Technic (e.g. power puller) and the rare parts that came with them.

Parts Render Quality on Rebrickable

Thank you Jan ... somehow those renders look better than the actual parts. -
Parts Render Quality on Rebrickable
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The element ID, whenever you're showing a parts list for any given MOC. Thank You BlakBird ... good find. -
What I did not read in this thread (I may have missed it) is what is the OP after with the adjustment feature? There are two main reasons adjustable suspensions are used in real life: 1. Adjust the height of the vehicle for ground clearance 2. Adjust the stiffness of the (air) springs to increase load bearing capacity. For #1, a mechanical solution is perfectly feasible/sufficient For #2, you'd need to go pneumatic or possibly a mechanism that pre-compresses (preload) the springs to move the operating point and increase load capacity. Which one are you after?

[MOC] Autonomous Caterpillar
DrJB replied to martijnnab's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great, please check your mail again, I did an LXF for another one of your 'creations'. I can guarantee the kids are going to love that one too. -
This MOC truly deserves to be in the Hall-Of-Fame! @lombardini - Thank you for reviving such thread. Always refreshing to revisit and get mesmerized again by such MOC.

Was not sure where this question belongs so ... if Mods think of a better place, please move accordingly. I've been looking at the pictures/renders of parts on Rebrickable and they are the best quality out there. Were these obtained from the same geometry as those for other sites/packages or were they totally redesigned? (that's a huge task). Most likely the site owner generated those with his own render settings. Anyone knows?

I know how to deeplink photos, but an LXF file, not sure that's possible. Do you know how? -
Noob question about unimog
DrJB replied to 9v system's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Amazing how unfriendly this forum has become. Guys, give the guy a break! How many of you have never made a mistake? No, he's not lazy, starting a topic on EB takes more effort (keystrokes) than it does for a google search. He simply did not think of that and decided to ask the obnoxious lego experts. Back to OP's question: The Unimog is a utilitarian Mercedes truck, very versatile and very capable. Few years ago, Lego made a model based on the unimog. It was one of the most anticipated technic sets ever. Since it is no longer in production, prices have gone up, and those who did not get one are, well, biting their fingers. Below is the official photo from bricklink. -
[MOC] Autonomous Caterpillar

Martinj: Very welcome, Thank YOU for sharing such a unique masterpiece. All: It seems the file is not made public yet by brickshelf. It usually takes a couple of days. If you need the file sooner, send me a message and I'll email it to you. -
[MOC] Autonomous Caterpillar
DrJB replied to martijnnab's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@ Martijnnab Here is the LXF. I made small changes because of LDD's anti-collision constraints. There were also few parts I could not put in the right place, because of LDD's requirements too. Hope this is useful, and now I need to build the real thing. Thanks again for sharing such fantastic MOC. Martijn's Caterpillar.LXF I also found one small discrepancy in the photo-build instructions. The last few pages show a rubber wheel in the worm's head, and such wheel is not there on the instructions for building the head. Fixing this in LDD was easy, but in an actual physical Lego model, one might need to disassemble few parts. -
The other possibility for one making an easy mistake in the build is that the beams that connect to the gear changers have length 6L. One could use 5/7 by mistake, but in fact they are 2x thin liftarms of length 6L. Better yet, can you post a photo of what you built? that way we can help you quickly diagnose/rectify the issue.

[MOC] Autonomous Caterpillar
DrJB replied to martijnnab's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Working on it and should have soon. I already did near 90% and then LDD crashed on me . Have to restart from scratch but will go faster this time. -
efferman's dozer on Ideas
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not sure about the 'licensed' sets comments. There are still few lines within Lego that have not used any licensing at all: City and Creator, so maybe there is a chance there, and efferman mentioned this dozer is at minifig scale. -
[MOC] Autonomous Caterpillar
DrJB replied to martijnnab's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm trying to build the model in LDD. One question: Are all the segments the same or are there small variations? Your instructions give step-by-step for each segment, but I was not able to detect differences. -
[MOC] Autonomous Caterpillar
DrJB replied to martijnnab's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Rather impressive/unique/novel. I tried to build something similar a while back, but was thinking of using a 'wave', a bit similar to the motion of a snake on sand, but in only one dimension. Struggled for a while to get the mechanism to work but gave up. I like what you've done, winches and springs is rather ingenious, let alone the flip switching switch flipping mechanism!. Is this the beginning of Bionic Lego (motions that mimic real-life / nature) ? -
42039 RC LDD

Thank you for sharing. That vehicle, just like the red truck, should have been labeled 'customizable' as well. Good Work!
