Lego Pneumatic Idea
DrJB replied to Rum's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What are you planning to use this for? .. and more importantly, why the many valves/tanks? If you explain what you are trying to power this with, we might be able to give some 'directions'. At first sight, it looks a bit complicated to me, but again, I do not know the details. -
Now I have to ask one question: We all know you can do LDraw files/renders with your eyes 'closed', but seriously, how much time did it take to recolor ALL those parts? I'm thinking, now that we have many parts available in girls' colors (e.g. lavender buckets), one is tempted to build two versions: Original for him, and pink/fuschia/lavender/purple for her ...

Future MOCs
DrJB replied to Epic Technic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, but there has already been an attempt, an entry in the TC5 context. It's a fascinating machine, very complex, and rather 'imposing' -
I started with an LDD version, just to get a feel for the build, and it's beyond mind blowing. One thing for sure, the track frame itself would deplete the worldwide supply of thin LBG liftarms ... Here is what I have for the LDD file. It's been very rewarding to do the LXF, and I bet that is only a fraction of the real building experience. Feel free to download and 'play' at will. Terex.lxf

Can your 8043 do this?
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
+1 This is why hydrostatic power is so widely used in those machines, as it has the highest possible ratio power/weight (or size). -
You can always import the LDraw file (LDR) into LDD, but it will result in many errors because of the no-collision constraints. I did exactly that and I get the following error messages: 1. 1 brick could not be loaded and has been removed from the model. 2. 1573 bricks were not placed correctly and have been removed from the model Now, you get only 50% of the model (Blakbird said it has around 3000 parts) and you can always attempt to rebuild the missing half.

I came across this a while ago at work, as we often scour what the competition is doing Our response was not as impressive, but for sure it was more 'elegant/catchy' So, has anyone attempted to replicate Liebherr's feat with his/her 8043? Some of these construction machines have enough power to tear themselves apart.

Give it couple of days. Somehow Brickshelf files need to be 'moderated' before they get released. Try it now, I copied the file location directly. Let me know if it works (it does for me). -

Are you going for a 'new', 'weathered' or 'totaled' (after a side crash) look? -

Another update. This time finished the body panels. Still some issues with LDD's 'No Collision' Constraints, but overall ok. Building this MOC, even with a CAD/virtual tool, makes one/you appreciate the efforts/talent of the author. I also added the unimog tires as those Nico used are not available in LDD. Also, not all flex tubes are available as well, hence the 'unfinished' look. Nico71's Honda.lxf -

YESSS, Kudos for another no-tires-needed MOC. I loved the video, until the last few seconds ... But, hey, at least it's only 2 tires, not 4! -
Software Suggestion
DrJB replied to nerdsforprez's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
From my own personal experience: 1. Start with LDD, you get a basic understanding of how the whole thing works. 2. Once you've encountered the 'limitations' of LDD (anti-collision, and limited parts collection), you'd want to 'graduate' to something more capable (based on LDraw). For most, LDD is sufficient as the learning curve is fairly quick, and on the fly 3D view/... etc. -

Thank you for sharing such sublime build. I started doing an LXF file, but ran into difficulties thanks to LDD's strict 'requirements'. In any event, if anyone is willing to carry on, here is what I have so far, it is most of the chassis, and just got started with the body work. Where LDD won't allow connections, I've used YELLOW parts instead to circumvent such constraints. Enjoy! Nico's RaceCar (Unofficial).LXF -

[WIP] Perpetual Motion Machine
DrJB replied to Boxerlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
There are three fundamental laws in Physics, that have always proven to be right: 1. Continuity (Compatibility) 2. Equilibrium 3. Conservation These take special forms depending on whether you're dealing with Newtonian Mechanics, electrical circuits, magneto-hydrodynamics, Navier-Stokes Equation, Maxwell Electro-magnetics, or heat transfer/diffusion. Now, most recent discoveries have built upon the past, not necessarily thrown it away. My former dynamics teacher once said: 'The last major discovery in mechanics was Newton's 2nd law. This does not belittle Lagrange's and Einstein, as those are simply 'refinements' of Newton's work. That said, I find it 'amuzing' that in this modern day and age we're still entertaining the idea that free energy is there for us to find and use. The 3rd law (Conservation) has to hold, no matter what. And, if it does not, you're most likely forgetting some factors. As for the sun undergoing a perpetual motion, well, that is only relative to the human's 'time' scale. Like all other starts stars, the sun was born some long time ago, and will die someday as well ... Darn, I love Physics! -
It seems there is a bit of confusion here between the old Control Centers and the Train's Variable Speed Controller. The latter is just a variable speed regulator, whereas the fancier old controllers have more programming functionality. Yes, wall power to energize the PF elements would be nice, but I doubt we'll ever see that. The train controller (below left) was introduced because train motors were energized through metallic rails. Now that TLG moved away from that, there is no reason/need for such element anymore. In fact, the new train remote (below right) does exactly the same thing as the old train controller. = However, the old control modules, as pictured below, were essentially predecessors to the MindStorms brick. These were introduced at a time where mobile computing was unheard of. Nowadays, with the plethora of control devices out there, it makes no sense (in my opinion) to go back to such antiquated technology. If you want smart control and to build some 'intelligent' contraptions, all you need is an iPad/iPhone/Android and the EV3 brick. Do not get me wrong, I have and love both units below, but ... it seems their time has come and gone. =

Come on guys, be more positive. You don't want to to squash his ingenuity at an early age stage. -
Does this mean you've built the model and instructions are already available? Or are you one of the lucky few who get to enjoy an 'advance screening' ?

I always thought/found the gray parts (all shades) rather boring. Glad you could put them to good use. -
Electrical Questions

Thanks, I already gave some of the answers (2/5), and glad we agree / have similar experience, especially for #2. As for 3, I knew of that thread (single post) but it seems old and the link to the video does not work anymore. PS. Why the TradeMark TM symbols before/after? Or is that unintended from the tablet you used?
