  1. Fully agree with this. Would be nice to have an EB contest where no wheels/tires are allowed!
  2. Reminds me of a Meccano humanoid, that came out only few months ago. Though it does not have the same 'flexibility' as building with Lego, it has a promising 'brick' and 4 servos ... and you can get it on sale at some Walmart stores for barely $40. http://www.amazon.co...s=meccano robot
  3. I saw them a while back, though I felt that, at $1.00 a piece, they were rather expensive, especially that they were plain orange and no added cost due to printing (as for the soccer/football balls).
  4. Yesterday I took the kids to this yearly event, and there, almost everyone was carrying these white and blue brickloot boxes. Apparently, if you had bought your tickets through groupon, you get one free box. Brick-Loot also had a display area where they were selling such blue boxes for $25, claiming a value of $40.00. After getting home, we opened the box, and granted, there were 4 mini sets in there. One was made with genuine lego parts, all other 3 were cheap china-made replicas. Needless to say I was very disappointed, as the value to me was $5-10 at most. How can a company such as this be admitted in an 'official' Lego venue, and be allowed to make $$$ off 'unsuspecting' lego fans? This is simply unacceptable, and a shame to the organizers!
  5. For those interested, BrickWorld Chicago is taking place this weekend, at the usual location (Renaissance Schaumburg)
  6. Thanks. I just downloaded the MPD. You guys are fast!!!
  7. Near 2:50, there is a module called 'Wheel & Steps', and I do not recall seeing that in the past from Akiyuki. Of course, there were other similar contraptions by others, but it's the first time (I see) an Akiyuki version.
  8. I like it a lot! I have many of those buckets (50+) and been contemplating building something similar, as in LDD renders below. Note that the bucket per say is not available in LDD, and hence, the use of 'generic' parts.
  9. Was there ever a Porsche in the 007 movies? ... Maybe a spy version of the car could be an option.
  10. Is this possibly a remake with 41999 ... or TLG looking for inspiration ?
  11. Agree about the gearing, but in the video that posted (above), if you look near time 07:00, it's as if two balls (orange/white) are released quickly one after the other.
  12. I think I know why the ball dropped: there were too many of them (crowded). It's an issue with timing, if you look at Akiyuki's video, a new ball rolls down only after the previous one got picked up. You can't have balls waiting one behind the other. You might need to adjust the speed of the motor. I believe the GBC Specification states the rate to about 1 ball every second, and in your video, it was going faster than that.
  13. I'm thinking a Venn Diagram with the subsets: 1. Number of Models in the HoF 2. Number of Models on Blakbird's shelves 3. Number of Models common to both 1 and 2.
  14. Beautifully executed. I can't help but think of Euler Angles and Kane's Rates of Rotation ... Any chance you can post 'static' shots of your contraption, for those of us tempted to build our own copies?
  15. Thank you for a beautiful and entertaining Exposé ... how come the hamsters did not take part?
  16. I have operated a large number of construction and agricultural machinery: moto-grader, back-hoe, skid-steer loader, wheel-loader, crawler excavators, multiple dozers, combine and other harvesters, various tractors ... my interest primarily is on noise and vibration aspects, but it's easy to get drawn-in by the sheer complexity of the mechanisms and intricate hydraulic circuitry.
  17. If there is more than one ring, you need a 'cam' mechanism to shift the many rings. The limitation is that you cannot switch in any sequence as the cam profile dictates the sequence. Most of the sequential gear-boxes out there are based on such idea, and should provide ample inspiration.
  18. Agreed, hence my comment (read up): Beauty/Value is in the eye of the beholder You too, just in case ... LOL I must add this though, regarding the argument of Focus vs Ferrari, and whether those chinese copycats take any $$$ or market share from Lego. The answer is a simple No. Those sets are long discontinued and the people who buy them do so simply because they can't afford (or are not willing to pay) the premium prices on eBay and other places. If any at all, those copycats are competing with the entrepreneurs amongst us. I bought 4 'discounted' helicopter sets (with the Fiorano wheel covers) because I felt there was more value in the extra parts as opposed to pay full price on BL, for the wheel covers alone. I did spend more money, but I have many valuable extra parts.
  19. Cool it off guys. Nothing wrong with sharing experience with others. Whether the OP wasted or saved money is really HIS call to make. Beauty/Value is in the eye of the beholder. While I agree buying off-brands promotes chinese companies, buying overpriced components from bricklink promotes blood suckers as well. Edit: I take that back, not very nice of me (as 1974 replied), though many on BL set very high prices, at least from my own experience. Apologies to those I did offend. If the OP is happy with his purchase, good for him ... After all, it's HIS lego parts (and his money), and he's free to do whatever he pleases with both. Lastly, I was contemplating getting one of those sets as an 'experiment', but now, thanks to the OP, I won't. So, his experience IS of value, to many amongst us.
  20. A while back I saw on eBay, someone selling such sets (do not recall the brand), from Israel. I thought this was more 'legitimate' than the China made, so I wrote him but never a response. What got me interested is, he stated the sets were made by Lego ... It was tempting to try, as eBay would cover such 'truth in advertising/description' issue, but decided not to in the end. The potential hassle was way more than the $$$ savings. If it's too good to be true, then for sure it ain't.
  21. Following the same logic, why are there not technic beams of sizes 1×3, 1×5, 1×7 ... and so on? If you pause and think about it, the reason for 1×3 is unique ... for other sizes, the reason is different.
  22. The more I read, the less I like ... an official apology stating the gear sequence deliberate? Waow, I bet the PR person who wrote that never drove a 4-wheel vehicle Really really disappointed.
  23. Thank you, that is rather refreshing from all the 'orange' threads out there. Yes, there is life beyond the ultimate :)
  24. I can only add my compliments for a very well executed review like others have said. While I appreciate the 'neutrality' and letting us decide what to take away, I must admit I'm rather disappointed by the lack of truly technic/reliable functions this set has. It might be that for the majority of us, we're expecting way more than Technic can truly deliver. The reason here is simple and is in no means criticizing TLG. It is a given that complexity and reliability work against each other, and there must be a 'physical limit' as to how large and how intricate/reliable we can make lego models. Maybe we're pushing the limits unrealistically ...
  25. I've been debating for a while whether this was a must-have yet, but with your honest review, I'll pass. I hope though that TLG will take your bruising comments in full consideration and continue sending you sets for critical/comprehensive reviews.
