  1. Was not a serious request. Just trying to 'prove' that DB gears are made of a softer plastic than old gears ... I think if you'd take an X-acto knife, you could easily cut a DB gear but not the 'old' gears ... This 'debate' has gone on for too long, might be a good idea to stop it here. One thing for sure, most engineers tend to believe 'passionately' in their own ideas ... it's how we're wired. No need to harm an innocent lego gear though, Cheers!
  2. While I agree with most points above, I stand by my noise-based explanation. While I agree noise is the result of a multitude of factors, the dominant one in this case is not shape, but hardness of the plastic material. One more 'clue' is that DB gears can be easily cut with an X-Acto knife. Such is not the case for the old gears. Anyone willing to sacrifice a DB gear? DB=Double-Bevel
  3. Oh I'm calm ... .. and enjoying a mint tea. I worked for a very long time for a German company, and tend to use exclamation points 'easily'. But seriously though. if you take a bunch of old gears, put them in a plastic bag and shake them, you hear the 'classical/distinctive' lego sound. If however you do the same with the DB gears, the sound is way different. Another indication the DB gears plastic is NOT ABS, but something close to Nylon.
  4. I'll rephrase: The NEW gears are made of a DIFFERENT plastic than the OLD gears. I have not done a chemical analysis but it does 'feel' like colored nylon! I'm using 'pointers' such as plastic friction, noise, and local 'hardness'. Would you at least agree to that ?
  5. You may have noticed that the OLD gears 3647, 4019, 3648, 3649 are made of ABS whereas the NEW gears 32270, 32269, 32498 are made of nylon. While Nylon has lower friction, it does have lower grip as well (new gears slide easily on axles). The friction wear I was referring to in my post is not that between gears, but that between axles (on which gears are attached) and whatever parts (beam, liftarms, connectors) the axles go through. Lastly, I think I know why the new gears have low grip on axles: axle holes on ABS gears are 'tighter' than on nylon. This is done for a very simple reason: ABS is harder than nylon, and thus less prone to plastic/permanent deformation. If nylon gears were made with tight axleholes, they may/will take a permanent deformation and lose such tightness/grip quickly. That school set looks promising. Do you have any info on where I can order one?
  6. Looks to me like you're going to have an electrical short with such layout. The two vertical branches on the left, they split (Y) and then loop back (top). The two rails will 'cross' .... If you are running this with the 9V system, you'll have a short. If however, you're running this with PF, then no issue.
  7. Seems it's getting a bit 'pilosophical' here which is alright. My point was that, for hydraulic systems, the fluid MUST be returned to a 'reservoir'. For air however (the way bus doors operate), the air can be simply vented out. Yes, I agree that in essence, the outside air (atmosphere) IS the reservoir ... though we might as well invoke principles from Thermo-Fluids and continuum mechanics ... Would be an interesting debate for sure. Strictly Speaking ... Work = Force x Travel Though for sure, Work and Energy have the SAME physical units, and thus the terminology is sometimes obscured.

  9. Jim, Good Initiative! I asked a question in a different thread few days back and I think it's totally lost now ... but a thread with typical issues/questions about 'packaged/pre-built' features might be useful as well. I'm thinking of the 'Voice Acitvated' option in iPad's EV3 Controller. Very little available on-line ... unless the app itself is a gimmick and not worth much.

  11. I'll add my 0.02 ... Fast motors (non-geared) would cause premature wear of the technic parts. The plastics used for regular technic vs. those used for internal gears are very different. Internal gears (those in PF motors) are made of a plastic that's more resistant to heat and wear. If you look at your lego sets that use the old 9V motors, I'm sure you'd see some whitish powder, resulting from the friction between axles and brick holes.
  12. I've been searching for subject matter for sometime but no success. I was able to control the EV3 with both an iPad, after downloading EV3 Commander. However, whenever I press the button to run voice command, I get an error message. Anyone got a clue as to how to get that to work?

  14. Anyone on here got the Voice Command to work on the iPad EV3 Commander? Somehow I always get the error: We're sorry, there seems to be a problem recognizing your voice command. Please try again. Or is this another flaky option?
  15. As tittle suggests, how does one adjust length of Technic components such as Linear Actuators, spring shock absorbers, mini linear actuators, ... ?

  17. When I started this thread, my intention was simply to get a specific answer ... this quickly degenerated into those who bought more than one, and those being upset at them. While each of us is entitled to his opinion, let us remain civil. We all had our frustrations and hopefully that'll pass. To concur with above post, I got upset few times when I missed out on few sets either from stores or flea-bay ... but such is life, let's move on.

  20. Well, in all fairness .... there are not only zero steps but also NEGATIVE steps .... Rememebr on the crawler where you have to built a large liftarms contraption to align the front and rear tires .... just so that you remove it later? Actually, it is not one negative step, it is rather multiple wasted steps .... to build such contraption. Well, either that or you end up with a crooked steering.
  21. Well, let us rephrase a bit .... how about: The goal of building a MOC is not necessarily to reproduce something beautiful (a maserati) .... but rather, to reproduce / scale-down a vehicle with challenging shapes? ... I am sure the prowler would qualify then ...
  22. Yes I do ... and that is why I was very specific in my comment. To get the search buttons you need to go to the top/home page ... would be nice if the search was available directly from within the Technic sub-page. Problem is, when I am searching for somethig specific while reading a technic thread .... if I go to another page to search, I may get distracted and end up somewhere else ... call it random lego surfing ;)
  23. Well, the file I was trying to convert is Bob Kojima's ball clock. The LDR file loads fine in LDraw, but when I import it in LDD many parts are totally misplaced, and many more are missing. Cannot load a pic on here yet.
