  1. I don't mean to post without adding anything to the thread, but I just had to thank you for the good laugh. This happens to me regularly :) Thanks - lol!
  2. I think you did an excellent job grasping the comic book nature of the series in the scenes. They are bright, playful, and detailed (but not overly in order to keep the simplicity of the comic). The tipped garbage can makes me chuckle, and I really like the tire swing and boards heading up to the treehouse. Nice job!
  3. I really, really wanted this set when ai heard they first approved it, but that car is just so bad. I can't justify buying a whole set just for the minifigures. I guess I am directing this money elsewhere. What a shame. I was so excited at first.
  4. My collection just hit critical mass two days ago when I found out we are having our first little one. I just lost my sports/LEGO room and all my space! I will gladly give the space to my little one without a second thought, but now I have to figure out where to put 75,000+ pieces, not to mention all the built sets and sorting bins/cabinets. I think I need a bigger place!
  5. I am not overwhelmed by this. I like a few of the pieces, and the carousel doesn't seem too bad; however, I can pass on all the little side builds - already have so many little "huts" and benches from the other sets. I would be happier to pay half the price for just a carousel, but I will be picking it up anyway - it's become a tradition now.
  6. I was gone a few days and came back to several comments. I just wanted to take a second to say thank you to everyone for the supportive comments and suggestions. Being my first true MOC since my dark ages, I'm really encouraged. Now, to some particulars... I am really starting to like these ideas, especially since I was leaning towards a park for my next build anyway. I may consider adding this bridge to a landscaped park with a stream/pond and build a new road scene for this section of town. Everyone has really got my imagination running. Thanks! To your first comment, I definitely wouldn't take it negatively. I love feedback so I can make my scenes better. As mentioned just above, I am thinking of adding this to a park now and redoing the street. We will see. To your second comment, I actually agree. I just really liked the Palace Cinema so I bought another one (my wife didn't see the need either, but the theatre in my town when I was younger actually was split between two buildings across from each other). I may take up some earlier suggestions, turning one of the theatres into a opera house or symphany hall to add a mixture to my slowly growing theatre district. Anyway, thanks for the comments! Thank you very much! I'm honored Thanks again, everyone! Keep Bricking!
  7. This brings me right back to some good ol' memories. Makes me want to blow in the game and get playing! I'm impressed with the light and buttons. Nicely done!
  8. First, to everyone, thank you very much for all of the nice comments. That really means a lot to me. I have been looking at all of your work on this site for a long, long time in complete amazement, and I never thought I could build something people would actually like. I came out of my dark ages roughly two years ago, but I have only been collecting sets and bricks; with the exception of my extremely quick build in Februrary for fun, I haven't created anything on my own till now. So, thank you very much. Your comments make me want to create even more. Thanks! Now, to some particulars... I really would like to continue this a lot more, but space is hindering me right now. My shelf is a "U" that goes around the room and is only wide enough for the modulars. So, sadly, I don't have room to put a street in front of the buildings right now. I very much plan to do so once we move next summer, and I have more room. I will be making a park to fit the corner of the street next, and I want to add an old cobblestone street near the Green Grocer with outdoor vendors (possibly). However, I haven't started planning those past the initial idea yet. Like I said in my post, this bridge was even just a free-build over the weekend. I thought about this as well when I got to the bridge portion of the build (I built the steps first, and again, this was free-built so I wasn't thinking that far ahead as I worked on the stairs). Cars fit perfectly underneath the bridge, but I don't think trucks would. I thought about putting warning bars (yellow and white stripped bars) under the bridge and/or warning lights, but I thought that would ruin the look. I can possible raise it a little higher in a few spots, but if I want to keep the stair height uniform, I am confined by the space of a modular layout. Low bridges are not unknown around my area so I don't have a problem with the height necessarily, but I will have to decide if I want to be more practical (add warning lights, etc.) or more decorative (leave it largely as is) as I continue to layout my city. As soon as I can find more space (see comments above)! I will be adding side streets for now, most likely in this style. I am, too! Well, sort of. I didn't plan this as I built, and as I was building, my initial thought was to put a red carpet in that area, but I didn't like a "half" carpet leading up to the cement in front of the cinema doors. My second idea was to put stone benches there, but I didn't like blocking the curved stairway or the walkway (leaving it open allows the drivers to drop off celebrities there). So, my current thought is to consider this an old walkway (that is why I yellowed parts of it) that was there before the bridge was built. Who knows; this may change, but for now, I like it if only for the reason that it breaks up the brick pattern on the street (the color as well as the direction of the tiles). First, I tend to agree with you about the tiles (assuming the green ones) attached to the bridge. I needed an element of color to the stonework, and that's the best I could think of at 5 AM. That may or may not change as time goes on. Second, the staircase is actually rather simple after some trial and error. I will post some pictures closer to next weekend (will not be near my stuff early in the week). However, the bottom few steps are just built using the same technique as in Pet Shop or Market Street (using a single stud to connect the bricks as they turned). I tried using this with the upper steps, but it wasn't sturdy at all. So, I used hinges with the bricks below the higher steps, and at the steps themselves, I took the same idea from Pet Shop and Market Street, but I used flat tiles where the single stud would have been because the single stud system doesn't line up with the hinge system perfectly (in fact, that is why I had to "cut" one of the turning steps near the top). That may sound confusing, but I will post a picture or two later this week. To be completely honest, the hardest part was just getting the right patterns that I wanted with the bricks, plates, and tiles that make up the walls as the stairs turned. Last, you don't ever have to ask to borrow the idea. First, I would be flattered. Secondly, that's why I love this site - to see great builds and learn from each other! Thanks for the kind words from both of you. I just bought and built the second palace cinema last week, and I didn't even have this bridge in mind until this weekend. After I tackle a park and one more street section, I am going to attempt my first modular building. We'll see how that goes (I am intimidated after seeing the beautiful modulars over the years on this site). Once I gain confidence, I really like the ideas of symphony hall and opera house. I am definitely going to keep those ideas close by. Again, thank you very much for all of the comments. I really appreciate them.
  9. So, back in February, a quaint little town was host to my first mini MOC (as well as the Oscars!) in honor of the release of the Palace Cinema. Well, since that time, the town has continued to grow, and after the excitement of the Oscars, they built a second Palace Cinema. However, due to space (on my shelf), they didn't build them together and an old street separated the two theatres. Well, no old, dingy coblestone street is good enough for their new theatre district, so they commissioned me a second time to renovate (i.e. freebuild) their little undertaking. So, without further commentary on my part ...the theatre district's cobblestone street and bridge. Front View Cobblestone street with crosswalk and traffic stop line. Stone bridge with ornaments (statues in honor of their Oscar Night premeire) and flowerbeds with stone. Angled View Side View Rear View The Bridge The Staircase ...with the Palace Cinemas I built one of the cinemas in reverse. I like all of the movie posters in the front. Top View ...still waiting for those two stand out minifigs that will earn stars. Those two dark tan spots are waiting! Angled View ...and finally, the premier night of ...um ...didn't think that far ahead. But, a good time, nevertheless. ...and, a final wave from King Kong. Thanks for looking! PS. I apologize for the pictures. I am definitely still learning (and, yes, the backdrop should be white and ironed ...lol).
  10. I can't wait for Friday's parade! It will be great to see the Cup back in Chicago! Go Blackhawks!
  11. I was SO looking forward to this set. In fact, I just took this picture today... ...however, like many here, this MUST BUY just turned to a PASS, and you can ask the wife, PASS was never in my vocabulary until now. I am definitely disappointed if this really is the final version.
  12. I love the colors, shape, and technique. This is stunning. Nice MOC. Question: how sturdy is the roof?
  13. I love Superman, but I just couldn't fall in love with this movie. It was good, but I don't like some of the changes they made. As many have said, some of the characters are really undeveloped. I may be in the minority, but I also thought the action sequences started getting tiring.
  14. Man of Steel ...definitely have some mixed feelings about it.
  15. I think the limo in general looks "off," and I can see an 80's vibe on the inside first floor; however, I don't get an 80's vibe on the outside. Assuming it was modeled after the Chinese Theatre in LA, it has a 1920s' theatre has its foundation. Most of the theatres around me built in the 80s were big, fairly plain boxes with a standard marquee. I wasn't a huge fan I'd it by the pictures, but once I put it together and saw it in person, I loved it. It may surprise you, especially when it is put together with the other modulars.
  16. I've always been a gamer, and after The Atari, NES, and Super NES, I've owned and played mainly the Playstation 1, 2, and 3 (with the small exception of the Wii which now collects dust). So, I already preordered the PS4. I'm not one of these Sony fanboys; I have just enjoyed my experience with Sony even before all this DRM and connectivity issues were revealed for the next gen. I will say that I think Microsoft is right with where gaming is going; they just may have made the switch too fast and too abruptly, and now they are paying the PR price for it. No matter though, as I said, the PS4 is preordered, and I'll enjoy the next line of games on that system.
  17. I must be getting CMF fatigue if the picture is real because I really am not that impressed by them. The.yeti is okay, and I will get the welder for the equipment; however, I don't find them all that exceptional. Either I am dead wrong; I am CMF fatigued, or I am just tired of seeing bricks after spending the last 48 hours opseparating and organizing 25,000 pieces. I guess we'll see later when pictures are officially released.
  18. 14. Conquistador Entry (vecchiasignoraceppo) - 3 points
  19. 7) hippie entry (vecchiasignoraceppo) - 3 points
  20. I think I am in the minority here. I was really excited about the stagecoach, and I picked it up along with the soldiers set and the teepee set recently. I so wanted these, but I was slightly disappointed after the builds. The size of the stagecoach just seems "off" and the plastic teepee just seems, well, just too "plasticky" (I know. It's LEGO, but... ). I guess I had my expectations too high because these were the first sets I almost regretted buying. Don't get me wrong. They are good sets. I guess I just let all the fanfare set my expectations too high. However, I really liked the set with the soldiers and went out to get a second, and I agree with the post above, the minifigures with these sets are great!
  21. I have all the modulars built (including three pet shops) except for Market Street and have them lined on a street. If you are talking looks, I agree with the post above mine and say that the Pet Shop should be built next as it adds to the residential feel (hence why I have three townhouses built). However, you asked what I had the most fun building (not what would look best next). In that case, out of the ones you have remaining, I would pick the Fire Brigade. The Cinema, while cool, didn't have many "wow" moments for me. The Town Hall is just big, and I while the columns were kind of interesting, I found the build sometimes annoying - just layer after layer of bricks. The Pet Shop has some, for lack of a better word, "cute" moments and it doesn't nearly get as repetitive since there are two smaller units, but the Fire Briigade edges it out with the year, furniture on the inside, door, etc (however, some parts around the bag door can get repetitive). I have to admit somewhat that my feelings may be based slightly in the order that I built these. For instance, I built the FB before the Pet Shop so the signage on the Pet Shop was not as unique to me, the stairs on the Palace Cinema was a "been there did that," etc. Anyway, rambling aside, PS or FB. I lean slightly with FB for the build or PS for the looks.
  22. Thanks again for the kind comments. I really appreciate them, especially with how quick this build was. I have two complete sets, and I split a third one (obviously took the townhouse). I wanted to make a section of the street more residential, and I think it works. It probably would be better if I varied them a bit (that is why I built the one reversed), but I just don't have time right now. I kind of hope LEGO puts out another set that has two smaller buildings. I like how they break up the street. I absolutely loved your pictures. In fact, I have already drawn up plans to merge the two ideas before you even said something. I want to drastically improve my idea while adding your elements - except (while I absolutely love your cars) I may go with cars from the 20s, 30s, or 40s. We'll see how it goes.
  23. Thanks for the kind comments. I just wish I had more time to actually plan and build :( Well, the only other designer in town made medieval costumes. The girls just had to grin and bear it. :)
  24. I haven't had a chance to build in a really long time, but after building the Palace Cinema last week, I wanted to add to it with the Oscars tomorrow. I only had a few hours to free-build yesterday so I threw this together. I am not completely satisfied with the backdrop (fake building), but that's all the time I had. Also, I had to use my cell-phone. If I get more time today, I will take better pictures. Anyway, enough about me... on to the Oscars! Oscar Night at the Palace Cinema After the unfortunate fire in Hollywood, this little town is hosting the Oscars. It's definitely going to stretch the 11-man police force. Let's hope they can handle the chaos! The Red Carpet The little town had to rip up the roadway between their theatre and their emporium, and they had to add a fake backdrop, seats, plants, and of course, the Red Carpet. They only had a day to complete construction, but so far it seems like the night is going off without any major hitches The Local Media The local media is having a field day at the event. Their little three man crew is having a hard time keeping up with all the celebrities, but their doing they're best to snap all the pictures and hold some interviews. They'll remember this for a long time to come. Uh-Oh, Some Trouble Not all of the locals can handle the excitement. This poor sap has had too many "grape juices" tonight. He'll be spending the night sleeping off that liquid fruit at the local precinct. The Fans in the Stands Well, at least the fans and celebreties don't realize what's going on outside of the event. They all seem to be having the time of their lives. Who would have thought that this small town would have ever hosted the Oscars? That's me in the red cap and my wife, the nurse. She wasn't happy that I wore a hat to the festivities :( ..oh, and no shirt. The Unlucky Ones Of course, not all the people in the town were lucky enough to score a ticket to the stands. The small police force is having a tough time keeping them away from the front doors. At least everyone is civil so far. Thanks for Viewing King Kong loves the Oscars just as much as the rest of the celebrities and had to make an appearance. He's just giving a quick wave to all the people for coming by. Thanks for viewing the town's quick little MOC of ...THE OSCARS! THANKS FOR VISITING
  25. By no means do I mean to get off topic, but Amazon actually had the Fire Brigade for $119 for a few weeks this year (was going to order another one, but I missed the opportunity by the time I decided to pull the trigger). So, I guess there's a chance that the Palace Cinema may be cheaper on there one day. If so, I will pick up another one without hesitation. For now, I am enjoying the one I just built.
