The Greatest Collectible Minifigure THANKS AND GOODBYE
MAB replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
He is unique in the sense that none of the parts have been used in any other figure. You may not be able to tell the difference, but he is different from the Hobbit elves. I also prefer the S3 print to the Hobbit ones, so much that I use fleshie heads on the S3 body instead of the Hobbit ones. But of course, you can use the same argument for the Scarecrow. To some, he is just a lower quality version of the multiple Batman Scarecrows.- 2,045 replies

Yes, for a collector, the value is in the packaging. The parts not so much. This is a don't open type of set.

The Greatest Collectible Minifigure THANKS AND GOODBYE
MAB replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
That picture actually shows the versatility of the S3 elf, compared to the Hobbit version of Legolas, although it is the same with the LOTR version and indeed many of the Hobbit elves. hairpiece - it is the only yellow eared elf hairpiece head - it's OK, but nothing special. Easy to switch for army builders. cape - always nice to get one in green for using on any forestmen shield - superb for any forestmen bow - superb for any forestmen, although now more widely available torso - amazing print for any castle / historic / forest type character - better than the rogue in my opinion, as it doesn't have the wolfpack symbol limiting it. Also easy to swap out arms for army building slight variations - they look great with dark green and any of the earth colours. Print is much nicer than the equivalent LOTR and Hobbit designs for elves. Also easily converted to fleshie if required as no yellow skin print. legs - again ideal for any castle / historic / forest type character, and can also be used independently of the torso. The print is consistent but not actually continuous, so that print is broken across the torso and legs. The armoured legs can be used spearately. Compared with the scarecrow crow - OK, but repeated in many TLR sets so nothing special now hat - OK, for one or two characters, but cannot be used in quantity as the patch is fairly specific and doesn't look random on more than one character. head - nice - unique, but no possibility of switching for army building pitchfork - boring, appeared in loads of sets before and after torso and legs - nice print, but they have to be used together because of the continuous belt print. You can just about get away with using the torso on its own, but not the legs. So no variation at all if you want multiple scarecrows, as they no longer look like the random collection of clothes they are meant to be.- 2,045 replies

Actually they weren't discontinued at the time. LEGO pulled a number of Doctor Who projects from Ideas and the rumour was that this was because CB had the license at the time (of course, LEGO never stated the reason). Then they announced that Doctor Who ideas were allowed back again, once the CB deal had ended. Although the CB products were for sale for quite a while afterwards in the UK. In fact, some small independent toy stores still sell them!

I don't believe in your thesis. You only need to look at the modulars to see how there is a range aimed at older builders in which construction is at the forefront, with the minifigures and their accessories taking a back seat. And look at how the modulars have changed - they have introduced many new parts over the years, or changed the ways they used to use older parts, to improve the design asthetics in the modular series. Also what you call basic can be seen as fairly advanced, in the sense of not really necessary but nice for this extra decoration. The quarter circle tile is not really a basic item to me, it is a specialized part for decoration (of a build), just like some minifigure parts are decoration for minifigures. A 2x3 tile, sure it will be nice, but is it really needed when you have smaller 2x2 and 1x2 tiles. They are the basics, extras are not basic. You could also say a 1x5 brick or a 1x7 brick should be made, as these are "basic" (but often unnecessary) but again they are specialised version of the basic existing bricks. Then there are bricks like the masonry bricks, again highly specialised decorated parts for buildings, when the basic untextured brick would have done. I think you are right that minifigures and their accessories have improved, but not at the cost of building parts. Specialised building parts have also been introduced, which make buildings look fantastic, when basic versions would have done the job OK, but not so good looking.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was some sort of train within Friends at some stage, although obviously in line with the theme - so white with dark pastels or magenta or similar. I imagine it would come without track, more like the Monster Fighters ghost train than a true train set.

Nice armies. My criticism would be the mixture of flesh and yellow skin characters. It is not so bad when you mix the other colours (eg. troll heads or fantasy style black ones), but flesh against yellow looks odd. I don't think you should be showing the fake Rohan soldiers as they are direct copies of a lego product and so shouldn't be here. I think the rule is that you can only show such figures when they are something that lego doesn't make, and even then they should be in the special region of Community rather than in regular threads. Although I'm sure I will be corrected if I misunderstood the rule about bootlegs. That said, if you don't say they are fake, how is anyone to know ...?

You have to host the images somewhere first, then link to them. Take a look at the FAQ thread, and search for "image". You will learn how to share images properly.

Character Building also did Doctor Who long before LEGO ... and they did quite a bit more of the history of it too.

And in how many of those sets did you get more than one? Lego don't treat this as a building part, so they will not include so many in one set.

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
MAB replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Lego rarely gives out information like this whether positive or negative. They will give a vague answer that you can interpret any way you like, committing to nothing. If he had said there are no plans at the moment, and then something happened in future, then that would give out information about how far in advance plans are made for such events.- 991 replies

The Future of Lego Space. (opinions, ideas, discussion)
MAB replied to Trekkie99's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
The quote from that page is "With 2018 marking 40 years of the modern minifigure and 40 years of Classic Space, Padda was asked if anything special was planned. ‘You’ll have to wait and see,’ he smiled, cryptically." So both the minifigure and classic space anniversary in one question. I have no doubt they will mark the 40th anniversary of the modern minifigure somehow. Of course, "you’ll have to wait and see", can mean "Yes, but I'm not telling you yet" but it can also mean "No, but I'm not giving you that information".- 991 replies

Nice moc, but I cannot see lego ever making it as a set with so many separators in it.

I'd also be against votes for mods. It is simply not necessary and would completely change the way the site is run with each "government". There is an alternative if you want to be a mod of a lego fan forum - start your own, build it up and police your forum's members as you like.

That was a problem at the time, as the picking staff were apparently unaware of the error, or indeed the existence of the corrected part. I think by now they know about it, and have only the correct ones. I know at the time I got sent a wrong replacement. Someone else I know had three incorrect ones sent before finally getting the correct one!

I have one similar to your first one, it is just about useable although I use 1x1 round bricks for the pawns so they don't fall apart so easily when moved. I doubt you'd be able to play with the smaller version. It will be just too fiddly to move the pieces, especially if there are pieces on neighbouring squares.

Quarter final 4, tough one for me as I cannot believe either of them made it this far. So I'll have to vote for the Bagpiper, not because I like him but only because the Scarecrow knocked out the Spartan.- 2,045 replies

The Greatest Collectible Minifigure THANKS AND GOODBYE
MAB replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
There are two definitions. One as you say, a soldier armed with a musket. The second definition is a type of soldier in 17th and 18th century France, which is what this one is. I thought the latter was well known due to The Three Musketeers. That would probably just be a measure of the popularity of the theme, rather than the minifig.- 2,045 replies

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Future Series Rumours
MAB replied to r4-g9's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Or (more likely) we'll get nothing more from The Simpsons. I believe the house and Kwik-E-Mart were well received by AFOLs and some older kids, but I haven't a clue how well they did financially. I think it has been too long between Simpsons CMF series for them to do a 3rd series. If they do a 3rd, they'll have to repeat a lot of characters to get new people drawn in. If people didn't already buy S1 and S2, then presumably they won't be interested in S3, so the pool of potential buyers drops. -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Future Series Rumours
MAB replied to r4-g9's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I don't believe they will do a series 3, as it has been too long since series 1 and 2, and the D2C sets. The list is pretty much the important second tier characters we are missing. They would probably redo more of the main Simpsons family though, although these could be good if they did maybe Halloween / Treehouse of Horror versions, or some of Homer's various outfits (Stonecutter, Mascot, Mumu, etc). Obviously, the ones missing are the controversial ones - especially the alcohol (Moe and Barney, with Lenny and Carl) and drugs (Otto) ones. -
Lego Licensed Parts available from Bricks & Pieces

You are probably also on their list of people that abuse the missing parts system. There is no way the retail sets would be missing those three animals. -
The Greatest Collectible Minifigure THANKS AND GOODBYE

Yes, and it is good to allow 24 hours for all time zones to vote. I was not implying that all Americans should vote for Liberty, but it wouldn't surprise me if she is relatively more popular in the USA than she is in Europe or elsewhere just because of what she represents. I think she is a lovely minifigure, and minus the flame and especially the tablet, makes a great statue for historical MOCs. But when it is head-to-head, she lost out for me.- 2,045 replies

It is all down to timing. If the vote started just as America was coming online for the day, she would have built up a large lead and then lost it (if everyone still voted the same way).- 2,045 replies
