It also depends on what the builder wants. One of the best ways to help builders not lose inspiration is to comment on their work. It doesn't have to involve money. There is a whole spectrum here; some people expect financial reward, others don't. At one extreme there are MOC builders who do it because they enjoy building and showing their MOCs, at the other extreme there are people that create electronic instructions for money without even building the MOC in real life. Only if LEGO are the IP holder, which often isn't the case. Eg. If someone makes a Star Trek MOC that Lepin produces, it has nothing to do with LEGO. By the way, some people are trying the crowd funding route right now. There is a NASA / Apollo Mission set on kickstarter right now. They are doing electronic instructions, paper instructions, or complete set with parts. They look a bit expensive to me but it will be interesting to see if they make their goal. Seeing as they already have the instructions (as they have the digital model), I wonder why they set the price (of both the instructions and the threshold) so high. Setting a lower threshold would have almost guaranteed that they make it.

See also this thread, where something similar is discussed.

And the other point here is that it doesn't help get a foot in the door if everyone else's foot is already in the door. If 1000 people get to 1000 votes, each of their submissions is still buried in with the 1000 other projects with 1000 votes.

It doesn't say that. "In August, the Harry Potter series was the best-selling toy in the UK, based on quantity sold." The CMF part is based on quantity sold. "two regular LEGO Harry Potter sets still managed to make the top ten best-selling toys, taking into account total value sold rather than total quantity sold." The two sets (Great Hall and HE) are based on value sold.

Read the last two pages. Supporting other people's projects not because you think they are any good, like them or would buy them but because you made a pledge to do it in return for votes for your project is bad because it does not raise "good" projects - that is, ones that people actually like. It raises all projects that join the thread. If 1000 (well 1001) people join the thread, they should all get 1000 votes. There is no selection between them based on merit. They all get 1000 as they pledged to vote for each other. What good is that?
-
Not that it matters, but it comes down to what you interpret this means: pledges to support all other projects in the thread. To me, if you pledge to do something then you have to do it or you have broken the pledge. Here, the pledge is to support all projects that are added. That is not all projects you like, but all projects. To me, that is essentially buying / selling support.

I think you are right about the design. Heartlake would have a 60051 style bullet train, in white with magenta and dark azure accents. And it would be really, really clean.
-
I've copied the post that was suggesting it above. I think the part I bolded makes it clear that you sign up a project and by doing so you have to vote for all other projects that are in the thread. If it was a "this is my submission, please vote for it if you like it", then I see no problem (at least from the Ideas side) although of course EB prefers any such posts to be mainly a discussion of the MOC with a discreet link to the ideas project.
-
I don't see any problem with that at all. If the other person (B) designs a project they (A) like, then they (A) should support it. However, A supporting something that they don't like just because B supported their entry seems wrong. It also seems a logistical nightmare. Someone has to keep the list of projects that everyone has to support up to date, and contact the members whenever a new one is added to ensure they vote and keep their end of the bargain.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Future Series Rumours
MAB replied to r4-g9's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I disagree. The frame alone would not tempt me to make a $75 purchase at full RRP. I'd buy what I wanted elsewhere with a discount instead. -
I'd go for 12! I reckon 12 would fit comfortably and make the table make more sense but any more would be too many at this scale. To me, the table looks too big for just four people. It might also look a little better with banners / flags/ pennants hanging on the walls to add some extra details (like the shields do).

Can't you print it once, then measure the corner to corner distance of say the standard cape both on the paper and a real one. Then scale the image by a factor equal to the real measurement divided by the print measurement. This should then give you the correct sizes.

This does not follow the rule as written. "While you may promote as you wish online, we do not allow independent contests and giveaways to be run or promoted on our website for legal and privacy reasons. Product Ideas engaged in the above activities will be removed without notice." So you are allowed to run contents about your idea, just not on their website. For example, if a youtuber submits an idea then runs a competition on youtube to giveaway a smaller version if he gets to 5000 votes in a month, this does not appear to break the rule. The competition is run on youtube, not on LEGO's website. There are other things that the rules do not appear to disallow. For example: vote for my idea and I will give you 5c (or donate 5c to charity) if I get X votes per month. I'd imagine most people would be against the buying of votes but the rules don't seem to explicitly stop it.

Methods for metallic silver/gold lacquering elements.
MAB replied to curtquarquesso's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
Well I know they do this to torsos after inserting the arms and legs after assembling them with the hips, as these have "shadows" on the inside legs and under the arms where the coating doesn't reach. A fairly expensive solution that works for gold is gold leaf. -
If LEGO saw something like this going on, I'd hope that they shut down all the projects involved. If you see a project you like, then vote for it. If you don't like it, then don't vote for it. Trading your vote isn't really going to work. 100 extra votes will do nothing. You'll need to get 1000-2000 or so to even be noticed by anyone looking for "good" projects sorting by the number of votes. But even if 1000 of you all vote 1000 times across 1000 projects, then that is 1000 of you on 1000 votes. So many that none will get noticed.

Yeah, MegaBloks ... minus the real head.

Yes, just one of those figures would have been good. But all six and the scenery too make it brilliant.

I cannot really think of much else that they could have given us to tie in with the Batman 1960s TV series. So they have already done themes based on TV series (multiple times) and they have already done large sets and polybags based on live action TV series. Doing a theme based on a live action TV series is not that big a step. But what does it matter? Something is always first if it is done. They hadn't done an evergreen licensed theme based on a popular movie franchise before they did SW, then they did SW. They hadn't done series of collectable minifigures until they decided to do the CMF series. Just because they haven't done a whole theme based on a live action TV series doesn't mean they will never do a whole theme based on a live action TV series. If they only did what they have done in the past, there would be no future. If there is a good business case for doing something, then they will do it.

Lego Financial Results January-June 2018
MAB replied to Khscarymovie4's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Yeah, highest grossing film of 2017, and pretty excellent critics reviews and decent audience responses but less good online reviews which were apparently attacked by the anti-Disney brigades. The movie was well received and the sets not so well (compared to past SW sets). But as you say, the SW merchandising machine has completely oversaturated the toy market. -
Such as the "Batman Classic TV series - Batcave". There can be no denying that set is based on the TV series.
-
Me neither, but they have possibly been tricked into believing it is real.

AFOL designer program
MAB replied to anothergol's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
This would need a very significant change in Ideas, in that the designers would have to upload their instructions and parts lists, or these would need to be generated by LEGO for every model. And they would have to give the rights away for others to build. This would essentially be bricklink's (failed) MOC shop. The other thing, if you read what they have announced carefully, is this statement: "For a limited time". Why go to those substantial changes in Ideas (when designs can hang around in Ideas for a couple of years) for a limited time.
