[MOC] Yet another orrery
R0Sch replied to Davidz90's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Coo! I can see some complex brain-work went into making this orrery so accurate. I like the elliptical one too. Here is something I did for an Ideas contest a few years ago. Was really hoping it would win and become a GWP, but sadly the Galileo Tribute was chosen instead. And they didn't even bother to correct the mistake on the clockwise orbit. Earth: 1:19.5 turns => 365.25 days Mars: 1:37 turns => 693 days / 687d Venus: 1:13.5 turns => 253 days /225d Mercury & Sun: 1:8 turns => 150 days / 88d Video link -
[MOC] Sun, earth and moon orrery
R0Sch replied to EWay's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wow, that earth is spinning fast! Good work with the accuracy of the rotation periods. I didn't even know Earth-Moon had a barycenter that is offset by such a great distance until a couple of days ago. -
42164 Off-Road Buggy

You are right that it cannot be inside, but it's clearly a 5L with stop in red.brown on the left side as all images show. Anyway, I corrected the error in the file. You're very welcome. That's why I do it. So people can build the models without waiting for month for an instruction or having to buy everything new all the time. You are right, this definitely needs tail lights. And most importantly a steering wheel... :) 42164_improved.io -
I don't want to continue this endless philosophical discussion, which makes more sense in the General Discussion thread, but I guess no one here has inside knowledge of the exact cost breakdown of a LEGO set. Based on the totally random prices we have seen so far we cannot say that a license makes a set automatically more expensive or which license costs more. It could be anything from material cost to how much the lowest wage employee in the chain has to get.
-
To be honest, it shoudn't matter to us consumers what deals big companies make. The end product and price has to match the individual expectations of each consumer and that alone is very subjective. For this set we'd probably have to ask some random kids on the street what they think of this "green tractor", but since adults buy the product it's not relevant either. So we reach a conundrum.

That part is trickier than I thought. I can see under the main turntable two large black gears (probably 36T) and at least a 16T lbg gear underneath those. But can't find a viable connection to transfer the rotation to the main turntable. Maybe @Davidz90 or @aeh5040 can figure it out. I'm going to bed now. The file is updated.

I see now, thanks for the explanation and photo. I made the corrections. Here is a better diagram showing the two axles and what they move and how the sun is geared. The only thing I'm unsure is if the lowest gear pair is a 36T + 12T or a 28 turntable +12T. Never mind, it's not a 36T gear but a small 28T turntable connected half to the rotating beam and half to the lower fixed frame.

I believe the reason they chose a longer axle only on that side is because the rubber band is pulling considerably more on that side of the assembly and the 2x4 liftarm could wiggle out after a few clamping and turning plays if using only a 4L axle. The other side also has no space to fit a longer axle. 5.5L would almost touch the ground so too long. The thing that bugs me about this model is a lot of axles sticking out without a half bush to cover it up. Just look at the rear. So ugly.

Good work! It only has the same beauty defect as the LEGO version had: it's not all metallic silver. :) -
[COR-FB] Harbor Defense Sloop, Wullham

Looks nice! I would have put some bars through the 1x2 round plates to secure the ropes firmly, which would look better with thicker brown string.
