Just got mine for $AU220 with a free Galaxy squad something or other. Happy face. They might be rethinking their Australian pricing in order to better compete with imports from Amazon and friends: 8110 $330 9398 $290 42009 $280 41999 $220 Good time to be Aussie.

It's 10 minutes in to August here in Australia, and the 2nd half sets have just appeared at http://shop.lego.com/en-AU. No sign of the 41999 though. Sigh, I guess I won't be getting one...

Custom power supply - an idea
Hopey replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It's really a matter of opinion I guess, but I'd say that the distinction is whether or not it's reversible. I can simply pull it apart and the parts are all in exactly the condition they started with. -

Like this: Not my idea, someone posted it earlier in the thread. I too noticed that it didn't work and was about to cut up some cables to make an adapter when I spotted the above picture. For some reason, I could only get it to work on the light grey end, although by all rights it should work on the other end too. Which would mean the end wasn't just dangling off. -

Nice work. I like the mix of old greys and new greys. The only thing that catches my eye is that the seat is too straight (IMO), although I don't have any ideas on how to do it differently. -

So this got me thinking, and I think I might have come up with the smallest possible PF IR setup without modifying parts: Although nothing's modified, I have used the "hack" of putting the two pieces of aluminium foil on the top of the light grey end of the adapter cable in order to power all 4 pins. Also note that I've only used one end of this cable, the other end is just sort of dangling off uselessly. I even whipped up a quick little car: It seems to go well enough, although I'm not sure how well it would do under a more significant load. It's not significantly smaller than the 8878, but given that I already had all of the parts (the battery pack was from one of my pre-dark ages sets), it's a better option for me than spending $100 or so on an 8878. -
yeah, but for some reason I'm doubting that is going to be available. Given that 42009 and friends have been on the European sites for a couple of weeks now and still aren't on the aussie site, I'm worried that by the time they get around to putting it up down under they'll all be gone. It could be that they'll go on sale at exactly midnight Danish time on August 1st worldwide. I hope so. But I have my doubts.

Wait, it's only AUD$219.99? The regular 9398 is bloody AUD$289.99! I'm going to be absolutely devastated if I don't get my hands on one of these...

Concept for new Technic parts
Hopey replied to D3K's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think there's some complications with this. There'd be 2 possible ways of dong this; either offsetting it 60 degrees clockwise or 60 degrees anticlockwise, or in other words, a right handed and left handed version. Would yo propose producing both, or just one? -
Yo. I recently got hold of some of my pre-dark ages sets. The wheels from my 8868 "Rebel wrecker" were rather badly yellowed despite being in a box for most of the intervening 18 years or so, and I thought I'd have a crack at whitening them. I found some 12% peroxide at the chemist and some Oxy-something laundry powder. The peroxide has some other stuff mixed in (ethanol, sodium laureth sulfate, some other stuff) which gives it a consistency something like shampoo. This proved to be a bonus, as I could apply it with a brush without having to muck about with xanthum gum or any of that in the retr0bright process, I just poured out about half a shot glass, mixed in a small sprinkle of oxy-whatever and applied it with a paintbrush. I left them out in the Australian winter sun all day, and repeated it the next day. Here's the before: And here's the after: Not bad, in my opinion. Before, the part that was beneath the tyre was clearly much whiter than the part that was exposed. Now it's difficult to tell the difference. They could possibly do with another day, but I don't think I'll bother. Now to do the wheels of the 8880 I picked up last year...

I really hope this will be available in Australia. Is there any word on the price, for those of us without the foresight to have entered the competition? presumably it'll be more than the 9398, if only for the extra motor and lights.

Ahoy. I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but here goes. I've started the process of attempting to fund my Lego habit by importing cheap sets from various overseas sources and (hopefully) selling them at a profit down under. Not yet sure whether eBay, bricklink, or some other avenue is the best way to go, but however I do it I'll need to post them out. One thing I didn't fully take into account is the cost of proper packaging. I don't think I can afford to buy new cardboard boxes for every set I post, especially since Australia post charges by volume rather than weight. So my current plan is to wrap the set in a layer or two of bubble-wrap, then cover that in brown paper, and mail it like that. I've never received anything in the mail that was so badly beaten around that this wouldn't be sufficient, but I'm not sure what experiences others have had. Is this an appropriate way to package sets to be mailed? Will it sufficiently protect the boxes? If you were to buy a set and receive it in the mail packaged like this, would it likely affect the feedback you'd leave? Cheers.

In terms of total units sold, I'd be very surprised if big flagship sets like 8110 would top the list. I was browsing somewhere recently (I can't for the life of me remember where, so no link sorry) which had a kind of leaderboard of sets with the little 7741 police helicopter at the top, which kind of makes sense, as it is a small set which was released in 2008 as far as I know is still available. I imagine the all-time best seller would probably be a collectible minifigure of one series or another. Bricklink tracks actual sales (through bricklink only, of course) and records how many wanted lists each set is on. Brickset also has stats of how many people own and want each set. These of course are also probably skewed in a similar direction as Rebrickable. For every 'serious' collector who voluntarily self-reports their inventory on one of these sites, how many kids are there out there with just a handful of smaller sets, who doesn't? And how many of these kids have unimogs? I don't know if TLG would release their own sales figures, so we may never know.

Cool. It appears you have the hard springs from 8110 / 9398, but on black shocks, not yellow. Are these available like that or did you assemble them yourself?- 44 replies

Old Shames: Your worst MOCs.
Hopey replied to Saberwing40k's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I came out of my dark ages while I was living abroad in the UK. I've recently moved home to Australia, during which I picked up a box full of lego from when I was a kid which my parents had thankfully held on to. I opened it up to find this monstrosity: See, I'd been into this box once before, mid-dark-ages (about 10 years ago), and I'd decided to try and build a 4WD car. I had 2 uni joints and 2 diffs, which would have been enough if they were of the same type, but one was a 28 tooth (from 8850) and one a 16/24 tooth (from 8858). So I had to construct my own centre diff, by drilling out the centre hole of a 64 tooth gear. If only I'd known about bricklink back then... -
I don't expect it to be particularly cheap regardless, I'm more concerned about availability. Will a certain quantity of the 20,000 be allocated to each market (and hence each website)? Or are orders from all the global websites going to be fulfilled from Billund? I imagine that they're going to sell out pretty quickly once they're available. I stupidly didn't enter the contest, so missed out on a chance at getting a free one, and I don't want to miss out on buying one just because I live in the colonies...

So how do I buy one? I'm in Australia, so should I be monitoring the Australian lego site, or the Danish one, or what?
