I'm not exactly crazy about a troll set either; the molds will probably be exactly the same or similar to the Cave-troll from Mines of Moria so it wouldn't be anything new or special.

If I remember right, in the books Thrain died in Dol Guldur before or at the very least around the same time Gandalf met Thorin for the first time. It's hard to know what Jackson could do, the time framing is kind of iffy in that part of the story.

Yeah, I think Jackson would like to end each movie on a satisfying conclusion instead of leaving a cliffhanger; in AUJ the tone was deliberately made lighter with Thorin finally accepting Bilbo and the 'I do believe the worst is behind us' speech. Like Fives said, I'm going to guess that DoS will probably have Bard killing Smaug, the Company celebrating at his death, and then preparing to explore the halls for treasure and the such. I doubt we'll get 8 sets though.

Well in that case I suppose you could just avoid this thread for a month or so, but I do kind of see your point. Plus I get the feeling we've exhausted talk on just about everything in the second LOTR wave with the possible exception of Orthanc.

I think it would depend on how much of DoS takes place in Mirkwood; if there's another big showdown like at the end of AUJ with Azog and the Company (79002), we might get a set like that. I think they'll focus more on Lake-town when it comes to a set of 79002's magnitude.

Don't worry, if you read fast enough you can be halfway through ADWD by March. :P Judging by where Season 3 ended, I think you'll want to at least be finished ASOS before Season 4 starts again.
