Flagships 1990-1999
SheepEater replied to SheepEater's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Guys, I'm looking at the results and I think the 8479 badly need more love. I'm guessing it's unpopular on this poll only because few people own it - believe me, it's far more than just a simple dump truck; the mechanisms inside are terrific and the automatic grabber arm works great. Consider this: Our own EB member blakbird, who AFAIK owns every single technic set in existence, has chosen this as his avatar. Good set, love the alternate ATV model. -

You have better self-control than I do. I voted for all but 3. But them again when it comes to Lego, 90s is the decade for me, when it comes to Technic/Town/Trains  -
Superb MOCs! While I've never been a big fan of the series, I've found Kane to be the most interesting main character among all RTS games. (Eat this, Kerrigan)

About the metallic green - it's funny how popular that color is now - back then in 2002 people complained how ugly it was. Little did we know we'd never see it again! About the latest 8070 'supercar' - I have it, it's nice, but a shifting gearbox was REALLY missed; 8448 is miles ahead. I'm gonna make a 90s poll soon but it's gonna be slightly different, I'm gonna include 2 sets per year for some years. -
Beautiful, but I find it a little bit disturbing that so far most of the biggest Friends MOCs are all done by men... C'mon girls, this is YOUR theme... impress us!

What I liked about it is that it's the first time (to my memory) that we Canadians pay the same price as the Americans: $4.99 CAD. UPDATE: TRU finally has put it on its website. It has a full description, and believe it or not, the actual name of the set is "Frodo of Bag End". http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=13215033 Product Description Head home to Bag End with Frodo and this LEGO Lord of the Rings Frodo of Bag End (30210)! Considering the John Candy character was based on Chewie, ... yeah. Ditto for teenager Leia looking like princess Vespa from Spaceballs. Luke looks like Marty McFly  Yoda as physical educatiom teacher.. brilliant. I wonder what subjects are Obi-Wan and Tarkin teachers of.

BRILLIANT! I recognized every character except the guy with blonde emo haircut on the bottom right of the stormtrooper/vader/boba fett picture, and the punk guy next to Lando. They all look like they are straight out of a 80s teen movie!

Darn... your city feels bigger than the one I've seen this year at the local LUG's toy fair show. Impressive.

I took a few PrintScreen's anyway for the heck of it.

Thoughts: Didn't expect 8043 to be so popular. I own it, and while I acknowledge the main mechanism is wonderfully complex (especially the treads being driven THROUGH the turn table), the shovel mechanism is way too weak But then again, I hate linear actuators. On the other hand, I hated 8436 and 8297 and I am glad they are unpopular My inclusion of 8461 was debatable since it was a re-coloring of 8458, but I remember 2002 vividly since it was the year I came out of my dark ages. And no new technic sets (that weren't re-releases) came out that year. Only 'racers'. I liked the RC buggy 8475, but it was no flagship. 8421 Mobile Crane was one of my votes, but over the years I remember many people slagging it for its weak lifting power out of the box - and they are right. However, it's an easy fix, just use a standard 24T gear instead of the (stupidly included) clutch 24t gear for the main winch drive - it will then almost lift its own weigth -
Nice! Is this a Gondorian catapult or a generic Castle catapult?

I agree, Eowyn is ADORABLE!!

How many The One Ring's from sets 9470&9472 did you use? Just curious.
-
Ha! Love it. Is that Han Solo's freshly-uncarbonized torso?
-
Excellent. Can't wait to see some more of your future MOCs.

All I see is a msxbox logo. Anyway. These figures look fantastic. I expect them to be kind of pearl silver in real life. And it looks like Gollum will be playable after all!

Flagships 2000-2012

Well, if it was full RC, sure, it would rival 8275. But we're voting for sets as they are out of the box. Plus, there can only be 1 flagship per year and 2009's is 8258. I actually bought 8265 (and didn't get 8258), I like it, but it doesn't have that many functions. 8459/8464 has all the same functions, operates more smoothly (better steering + pneumatics with air tank), with about half the parts. -
Yup, as I found out earlier, curly hair looks great on female minifigs. Gives them a "soccer mom" look
