  1. Thought I'd update my previous review now I've received my Xeno fig (Thanks Blacktron!). Wow!! The Xeno looks even better in the hand than it does in the pics. Great detailing. The head and hands can be rotated and the arms and legs move freely like a normal fig. The claw feet give the Xeno just enough extra height for the correct scale so they're taller than a man - and they even have a stud hole in the sole allowing them to be attached to a plate just like a regular figure. Awesome attention to detail. I also received some new improved marine helmets. The original helmets tended to be a bit loose on the minfig head - but the new ones have totally solved that problem. Blacktron has used a clear rubbery layer inside the helmet which grips the minifig head very firmly. No more problems with helmets accidentally rotating or falling off. Some of the helmets even have an infra-red sight over one eye which is actually made of transparent plastic so you can see the minifig's eye thru it. Very cool. Looking forward to mocing with these great new figures. Highly recommended for all Aliens fans.
  2. Looks cool. Nice idea to have two drivers. I suppose one controls the upper arms and one the lower arms? Could make for some interesting accidents if one driver doesn't know what the other is doing!
  3. Thanks all. I used powerfunctions for the APC lights and iPads displaying flat fields of blue and red for the ambient lighting.
  4. Scene from James Cameron's 1986 movie 'Aliens': The marines approach the colony complex in the APC. The atmospheric processor glowers in the distance
  5. These look very cool. Great job on the design and molding! Good idea to make the ribcage and back pipes like body armour. And that's cool the hands and head can still be turned. I'll have to start thinking of cool Alien scenes to moc now.
  6. Great job. The three characters are instantly recognisable.
  7. That's a very sad capitulation from TLG. But regrettably understandable: The Greenpeace campaign, however ill-informed and unjustified, was an unwanted headache for a company that just wants to get on with selling its toys (made from oil ) in peace. But it may turn out to be short sighted: The environmental extremists won't stop there. How long before they start targeting Lego directly - along with other companies that rely heavily on oil to make their products? Maybe this will be a lesson for Shell who have gone to great lengths to flatter and bow to the extremist environmental movement - even helping to fund them. Time to wake up guys: they want to shut you down. Time to stop grovelling and apologising. Time to start fighting! Shell should be getting out there and publicising all the many benefits of fossil fuels; how they provide billions of people around the world with essential heat, light, power, transport, fertiliser, plastic feedstocks, semiconductors etc etc. Time to stop apologising for creating our modern world and time to start celebrating it and taking credit for it.
  8. Impressive scale. To add pictures click the box thing then select medium size (800 wide) then 'grab bbcode' and copy paste the contents here like so: Minas Tirith (front 3) by TAG Style, on Flickr
  9. I think it's worth it. Seems better value than the BTTF and Ghostbusters sets: GB £45 for 508 pieces = 11.3ppp BTTF £35 for 401 pieces = 11.5ppp Exosuit £30 for 321 pieces = 10.7ppp Guess there's not much in it. Maybe it just feels better value cos of the overall price is lower. Plus it contains lots of small grey pieces which are useful for sci-fi moc-ing.
  10. Flickr user Oliveseon has did a mega moc combining Orthanc and Orc forge plus a whole lot more: Here's a link: PS. Flickr seem to have fixed it so you can't embed someone elses pics anymore. Annoying.
  11. Great job Deathleech. I like that Grond battering ram. Seems to me the LOTR/Hobbit sets are seriously lacking vehicles and play value - so a set like this with a gate to smash open would be very popular with the kids. Much better than the recent 'bit of ruined wall' sets.
  12. Thanks for the very thorough review. Speaking as someone who bought all the 1st wave LOTR sets (even Weathertop!!), this is a definite pass for me: 2 bald orcs, a bunch of unposeable fixed-leg figs, another Legolas, another Uruk Hai Army Ballista and some uninspiring buildings. No thanks.
  13. Great job. Really like the details and texturing on the front facade. Similar idea to the guy who used the Krusty heads as masks for his bankrobbers. Great way to reclaim and lego-ise the Simpsons figs which never felt like proper lego to me.
  14. The alien looks great. I like the 3-fingered hand. I'd also be interested in trying that head piece on a Larry Lars brick-built body: The brick-built body is very fragile and can be frustrating - but with some patience you can do some interesting running and crouching poses that aren't possible with a standard minifig body:
  15. Thanks. I think I could have improved the 2nd shot with a bit more work: adding some more floor grates and suspended lights on the ceiling and better light on Ripley. Also the jar on the right would be better if it didn't overlap the fire extinguisher. But you can only spend so long fiddling with a scene before it becomes a chore and you think 'Dammit. That's good enough'. I was pleased with the way the triangular glass doors came out. I think they look pretty close to the ones in the movie scene. My next Aliens moc will be a big outdoor scene - so please stay tuned to my flickr channel if you like Lego Aliens.
  16. Nice to get the white hand prints, but the thing that bugged me about the set design (apart from it being rather ugly) was that the light brick surround is constructed in a way which causes stray light to leak out between the bricks in an unrealistic fashion. Easily fixed but to me it constitutes 'bad lighting design'. First thing any kid is going to do with the set is draw the curtains and fire up the light brick and look for a realistic fire effect - instead you get an unrealistic beam of light shooting straight out the front. Ugh. Call me a perfectionist but that kind of thing really bugs me.
  17. Thanks all. Here's a follow-up scene in which Ripley and Newt get locked in the lab with facehuggers on the loose:
  18. Here's a link to my Aliens MedLab moc, using Blacktron's custom figures, over in the sci-fi forum: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=99177 PS. Just noticed this thread has had over 17,000 views! Nice going Blacktron!
  19. Thanks for the positive comments! Re the lighting: I built powerfunctions LED lights into the table top under each jar. The wires run under the floor. I would have liked to have more detail on the facehuggers but 2 droid arms was all that would fit in the jars.
  20. Scene from James Cameron's 1986 movie 'Aliens'. -------------------------------- Hicks: Oh, it likes you Burke. Looks like love at first sight to me. Bishop: Two are alive. The rest are dead. "Removed surgically before embryo implantation. Subject Marachuk J, died during procedure"... They killed him getting it off. ------------------------------- Thanks to Matthias for the custom Aliens minifigs: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=57638&st=50
  21. Wow! Those troopers look great. I really need to play that Colonial Marines game sometime. I hear there's a new Alien game coming out soon too - based on the original movie... I like the new Bishop & Gorman figs too - although I'm still fond of my mark1 versions. Just putting the finishing touches on a new medlab moc using them. Ever thought about making an alien head piece? Larry lars made a great brick-built Alien, but the only piece that didn't really work was the 1x3 curved slope for a head - too blocky. It would be great to have something a little more accurate for the head - but keep Larry's brick-built body design. Just an idea.
  22. Some good advice on here. Start small. If the moc is minifig based then try to come up with some interesting poses or action first - maybe try some test shots with minifigs only - then build the moc around thoses poses or that scene. And don't be afraid to steal ideas from other builders. Most will be flattered if you give them a credit in your photo description.
  23. The aim should be to avoid purchasing unnecessary parts. I recommend you start building your moc with the parts you have - if necessary using temporary pieces and colours as place holders. Only make a Bricklink order once you've established exactly what parts you need. Often you'll find an alternative way of doing something using the parts you already have; Or one of the pieces you need will just turn-up. If you decide you need a particular part, a good trick is to use the Bricklink catalogue tool to list what sets contain the part; you might discover it's in one of the sets you already have - in which case you might be able to pull it off the set. Also make sure you have all your existing parts sorted and grouped: There's nothing more frustrating than Bricklinking 10 curved slopes only to discover you had a bag of 20 under all your other bricks!
  24. Nice work. I like the extra floors. Top 2 floors are a little cramped (I just made mine a solid block) but nice to keep the armoury display I guess.
  25. Got mine today from the Lego store in Bluewater - they had a shelf full - at least 40 sets. Not much consolation for you guys in the States - but still plenty for us Brits if you can make it to a Lego store. I must say it's an excellent little set. It was fun to put together from the box art without refering to the instructions. I really like the dinosaur, and was impressed with the printed star chart (no pesky stickers). Also make a great parts pack - lots of useful small pieces.
