Sorry - I'm not familiar with LDD. However, it should be pretty easy to copy from my flickr pics - especially if you have the original set in front of you for reference. Actually, for me, copying and trying to improve on other people's designs is the most fun part about Lego. You might spend a day building an official set, but you can spend weeks tinkering with it and trying to improve it. Looking forward to seeing other people's Orthanc mods.

I was going to ask how you got the horses to move...maybe magnets under the track or something... then I spotted the technic reels at the finish line. Q. Does this mean the race is 'rigged'? Nice job with the build.

Very nice. 6 sets? Impressive. Needs a Barad-dur with a flaming eye in the distance. Perhaps a small one using forced perspective.

Updating with pics of the complete tower: Here's how it comes apart: Once the two halves are locked together the join is pretty seamless:

Review Review: 10237 The Tower of Orthanc
Missing Brick replied to Rufus's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Just finished the complete tower - with all four walls. Looks totally awesome. The top floor with the petals is a work of art. I'm not completely happy with my wall split points yet ( a couple of bricks normally pop off when I push the two halves together ). I may need to add a row of plates/tiles somewhere to make a more robust split.... Anyway way, props to the designers at TLG for a great set and a hugely enjoyable build. Now for a £200 Minas Tirith or Minas Morgul please.- 138 replies

Review Review: 10237 The Tower of Orthanc
Missing Brick replied to Rufus's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
This is an epic, epic build. I must be up to 12 hours over 2 days now - and only just finished the library with the wizard portraits. All these people who say they completed it in 5 hours must have had the whole familly working on it. I've been making some minor mods as I go; swapped the huge dayglow stair mount for some nice small black clips and added a dungeon cell. Still working on integrating my removable back wall. It's difficult because there are not many places you can spilt the walls... Will update my back wall thread when I'm done. PS.. I absolutely love the throne room. And a cool thing no-one mentioned yet: The throne has been cleverly designed so that Saruman can sit on it without crumpling his cape. Unlike the 'Gandalf Arrives' set.- 138 replies

Thanks for the link. Looks great! Couple of improvement suggestions: The DBG roof might look better in another colour; Dark brown? Maybe dark red? Also, maybe one of the small buildings could be angled using jumper plates to get a more natural off-grid look.

Review Review: 10237 The Tower of Orthanc
Missing Brick replied to Rufus's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Thanks for the excellent review Rufus. One part of the design i'm not that keen on is the stairway mount: It seems to gobble up the entire area behind the warg sticker panel - which I was planning to turn into a nice little dungeon with door etc. I'm thinking it should be possible to mod the mount to use regular clips instead eg. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=30237 and http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2921 Although it might be a bit tricky getting the top of the stairs to line up nicely with the wedge plate and you'd get some slop on the angle of the stairs - but IMHO worth it for a bigger dungeon area.- 138 replies

Mine's going in an Ikea Billy bookcase with glass door (40 x 28 x 202cm). If you take out all the shelves in the top half the tower fits with about 25cm space above for a couple of eagles to fly in.- 138 replies

Hi, I get a youtube message that pops up saying "The content owner has not made this video available on mobiles". Please can you change this setting so we can see your video on mobiles? Thanks. PS. I do all my browsing on an ipad now. PC's are just too prone to java viruses as I learned to my cost when mine was infected by ''windows defender' ransomware via a malicious website script. -

I plan to fix it at 3 points: 1) At the bottom using technic pins 2) Where the snot skirt overlaps the two sections around the base (using a 1x1 with studs on 4 sides) 3) At the top where the roof fits on and straddles all 4 walls. The rest will just interlock using tiles where appropriate. I'll post an update when I get the full set. The only part of the design that was tricky to figure out was the snot base section because the fixings aren't shown in any photo...

Thanks for the positive feedback guys:) Yes, the official set cheats by extending some floors a few studs beyond where the back wall would be in reality. They did it to create more play space. So I will need to trim back a few studs to make the back wall fit. Eg. the secret 'trophy room' at the top will probably have to disappear completely because in reality that 'room' is only 2 studs wide! > How much did it cost you I spent about £35 bricklinking extra parts for the wall + using my existing of black bricks - so probably about £50 if you had to order all parts from scratch. I got a good deal on the 10x1 curved slopes (x28). Only 2p each!!

Project: Aliens - Colonial Marines
Missing Brick replied to Blacktron's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
Catsy on flickr made quite a good version of the M240: "Materials used: BA M4, BA M6 Rocket, BA PSR, BA trans-blue bayonet prototype, sprue, kneadatite (green stuff), styrene tube, and paper clips." -
UPDATE: Please see pics of completed tower at the bottom of this page. I made quite a few changes from my pre-release prototype... ----------------------- Here's my attempt at a back wall for Orthanc - based on a close examination of photos and videos of the official set. Some mods will be needed to make it attach securely: *** Please see updated pics below ***

Project: Aliens - Colonial Marines
Missing Brick replied to Blacktron's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
I received my 3 colonial marine minifigs from 'Blacktron' last week and I can confirm they look even better in the hand than they do in the pictures above. The molds and painting are excellent. The parts seem pretty tough so no worries about breaking them. I liked them so much I ordered some more. I will post some pics of my APC crew when I receive my Vasquez and Apone figs. Highly recommended. -

Very nice. Cool to see the 4 sets side-by-side. Unfortunately they're just too darn big for me to display with the space I have here :( -
Press Release 10237 - Tower of Orthanc
Missing Brick replied to Bonaparte's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
@ SMC. Indeed this appears to be wasted space. There's a 6x6 void behind that panel with the warg sticker. I guess it would be hard to access from the rear so they decided to just brick it up. I plan to replace that panel with a door to create a real dungeon cell or, with some imagination, a secret entrance to the mines below. -
Please can you post an html link for ipad users. I just see a big black unclickable square on my ipad. OK - found it:

Press Release 10237 - Tower of Orthanc
Missing Brick replied to Bonaparte's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Having built the back wall for the tower I can confirm it's an enjoyable building experience. It reminded me of the rockets I used to build when I was little. It's alot of fun as the building gets taller and taller and you wonder just how much higher it can go. There's alot of interesting exterior details. I love the snot skirt around the base and all the barbs and greebling on walls. Of course when I was little I would always give my lego rocket a test flight: and enjoy the resulting explosion of bricks when it crash landed. But don't think I'll be giving this bad boy a test flight. Not unless I want a hole in the floor. -
Nice little MOC. Although I can't see TLG releasing this particular execution scene :)
-
Thanks, but in fairness to TLG, a 5-wide would never pass play-testing: Too fragile with lots of parts only held together by one stud. Also, the doors on my 6-wide could do with a stronger fixing. That being said, there's no excuse for the original design ( Those wheel arches! OMG ).

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=50945 + http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=51011 + some snot mounting to lower the car slightly. Nice. Thanks for the tip Good idea. The problem then becomes how to fill the gap between the front edge of the door and the wheel arch which is currently filled by the inverted slope. Tricky but I'll give it a try. Thanks.
