Finding Parts for Technic MOCs

Is the 9398 one to pass up??? I'm considering getting it, but if I can simply buy a few motors, that will make me very happy... -
Lego Technic 2h 2013
Porty replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Three years is also my reason, but also because every other year, they do an RC set...2009-Huge Set 2010-RC Set 2011-Huge Set 2012-RC Set 2013-Huge Set So judging by logic, I can accurately say that 2014= RC set. At first I thought maybe just a bulldozer, but I doubt it... Also, don't say that lego is incapable of making a RC car...- 902 replies

Lego Technic 2h 2013

Crane looks awesome. Any more news??? BTW, After 2 hours of speculation of past technic years, not using the computer even, I think I know what TLG is planning for 2014--- An RC Supercar. Some of the specs I think it will have are these: -Working V8 -Hubs from 42000 -The new reinforced 8 tooth gears -A four-speed transmission -1 IR Remote, 1 IR Receiver V2, 1 L Motor, 1 Servo Motor -Possibly licensed with Mercedes Benz -Probably ~1400 parts -Blue, Red, or Orange (Hopefully Blue) -New Wheels To back up new wheels from Niels on TB: "Whether we get it or someone close to it back again is not in our scope yet, the only thing I can say and promise is that there will be new wheels & tyres in our assortment already in 2013 and again in 2014." Who agrees- 902 replies

I'm also trying to decide for me. Although I have a large collection, I would like to make it even larger. I'm definitely going to be spending over $500 on my EV3 collection, so I won't have a ton of money to spend on Technic, but which of these are best (Pick 2 or 3): 9397, 9398, 42000, 42009. I have an 8285, do I need 9397? I have 8043, do I need 9398? As for Boo, I think these: 8258 8043 8110 9396 9394

Sorry, I believe some one took yours and copied it in SR3D Builder. That makes yours the only real reverse engineer.- 902 replies

Lego Technic 2h 2013

Nice 42001. 42008 has been done twice, dokludi has a fantastic 42009, Junkstylegio has an outstanding 42001, and I believe my new 42005 is accurate. I didn't have the red micro panels, and a few things I didn't have in that specific color, but other than the panels, the parts are correct I believe.- 902 replies

I have many sets(8285,8258,8969,8043,8110,8051,8067,8261,9392,9394,9396,8081,NXT 2.0+rechargeablebattery+compass and gyro sensor+ FLL board from 2011) but not near enough parts and not the right parts to build EVan... With 2 retail sets, you will have 2x the software. Maybe you could send me the extra. And I could save $100... I could give you an e motor for it... BTW, sounds like you will have a superb EVertime!
-
Wow. Why doesn't Lee do something like that which you could build from only 10 core sets, and 20 expansion kits? I have decided that this year I will be buying the education edition of EV3 with software, 1 expansion kit, 1 IR Sensor, 1 IR Beacon, and 1 more Medium motor to fill that Port D... All for a grand total of $615...

Wow! I love it.... Did Blakbird help you with those renders or are you just that awesome??? EDIT: RIGHT CLICK, SET AS DESKTOP BACKGROUND

"You probably won't.......talk yourself out of it " @Gekke Ted: You were right. I decided to spill out the cash and go for it. At $220, its simply irresistible... 8.4 cents per part... wow... For me it looks like this right now: 31313 Mindstorms EV3 W745501 Mindstorms Ev3 Rechargeable battery pack Extra Ev3 Touch sensor EV3 Ultrasonic Sensor 8836 Sky ranger (already ordered) Ev3 Expansion kit 2 25cm Ev3 connector cables 42009 Mobile crane Maybe 8480 Space shuttle And a partridge in a pear tree....- 902 replies

Lego Technic 2h 2013
Porty replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Totally agree here. 42007 = 15 cents per piece!!! 42005 might be even worse! You are smart with your wish list: 42009 = 8.4 cents per piece, better than the unimog which was 9.7 cents per part. 42008 is about 10 cents per part, 42000 = a mediocre 11.4 cents per part. 31313 = 58.2 cents per part, but for what you get it's fine. Over all, lego has done good this year. I don't judge a set by the model presented, but rather by the parts therein.- 902 replies

Never Ending Struggle?
Porty replied to Porty's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
As a side note, what made me think this is Allanp's post about 42009: "Real cranes? Real cranes don't have LAs either, the mechanisms were clearly NOT inspired by real cranes. Comparing 42009 to real cranes? What a joke Oh, but maybe I missed your point, maybe you meant that only it's appearence were inspired by real cranes, I forgot that technic is now only concerned with looking authentic as opposed to actually being authentic. Ah, remember when tehnic had those three core pricipals? Authenticity, Functionality, and Challenging building Let's look at 42009. Authenticity, the first and foremost core pricipal. If it's intentions were to just look like a crane then, maybe. I don't think real cranes have colour coded bolts and gears and drive shafts which does spoil what authentic appearence it has slighty, but they did get the shape of the thing (apart from the arm pivot being too far forward) and angle of the wheels when steered right. But this is not model team, it's technic, technic is about mechanisms and working models. The only authentic mechanisms on this crane are the ones made of bits of string. Not one mechanism that's not made of string is true to life. So is it authentic? NO. Functionality? It does have some good functionality. Nothing is manual apart from most likely the slewing maybe, didn't look geared in the video. All the controls are in more cetralised places away from the functions. So, YES. Challenging building? Too early to tell, but with the current trend of colour coding all axles and gears and pins to make it look awful and having 5 or 6 manuals for one model and learning from past experience everything points to NO. So, comparing it to real cranes is a joke, and now it seems it's a joke compared to Legos own set standard having scored only 1 out of 3." I like what Lipko said in reply: "It can be a toy, it can be an exact replica* or it can be art. I prefer the art, and that the overall model should be good. Perfectly balanced in terms of function, look, building style and building experience. Stuffing as much stuff as you can, or being as authentic as you can (abuse Lego) won't make a good model for me." -
Never Ending Struggle?

Thanks guys, VERY good answers... Ok, makes me feel a lot better about my Lego addiction... -
I have a few questions... First of all, are there any MOC's which are completely realistic in authenticity and functionality, or sets even? Because it seems like even the best of the best (like Sariel in his book) say that basically 'perfection isn't possible'. Or am I reading wrong? Secondly, I have a phobia about batteries losing their charge. How long (about) would it take for a 8878, Nxt Rechargeable battery, or EV3 rechargeable battery to get to where it cannot hold a charge very well?
