Guilds of Historica Introduction/General Discussion Thread
Gideon replied to I Scream Clone's topic in Guilds of Historica
I think a colonization storyline would be a great candidate for a new set of challenges with great potential to explore new cultures and wilderness, but I wouldn't want to abandon Historica anytime soon...there's just too much of this diverse continent to put into ABS plastic! In any case, we should wait and see what the official story after Challenge VI will be. Even though I'm not going to have time to make an entry (heading to Ireland for a while now with no access to my bricks), I really like the idea of either a continuation of the war in some form (like SKs entry) and/or rebuilding Historica. The idea of some kind of low-medium tech industrial revolution is also interesting, what comes to mind for me is somethink like the manufactories of the late medieval/early modern times - think water wheels, blast furnaces, larger scale textile manufacturing - but no steam engines or anything like that. The Mpya Stedor golden window company was a great start! All of this could easily give raise to a wide range of challenges/mini challenges. I like the fact that the future of Historica is being discussed, that alone makes me believe more in a great future for this project! -
Impressive interior, I will have to look closer at your pictures when not only on a phone. I really like your open ending with Revolword being betrayed and removed (along with the elemental menace?) but still leaving Historica with an enemy to fight during a rebuilding phase. Definitely a top candidate for the official ending!

Guilds of Historica Introduction/General Discussion Thread

I agree with Ska that we shouldn't take GoH too far from the high medieval/high fantasy air it has now. But that doesn't rule out more advanced shipbuilding or limited gunpowder use in my view, I'm just afraid it will limit the castle building techniques. For me as a bit of a fortification nerd, knowing that the enemy would be well supplied with reliable cannons would dampen my desire to build beautiful high thin stone walls and instead make me want to build ugly low earthen bastions... But that future chapters of GoH moves technoloogy forward seems to be a logical choice, I have always been a bit puzzled by how fantasy worlds almost always seems to be stuck in technological development for millenia. If you want to reinvent your sigfigs by jumping 100 years forward it doesn't sound like a bad idea to me (my half-elf got plenty of years left ;) ), we just need to concider the implications of advancing tech too fast. -

In this case the lady in the shop told me that it would have been better if they had written on the bags since people seems to ask for specific figures. I agreed and told her I was looking for the "elf girl" and had to buy a few suspect bags to hopefully get one, even though I was quite certain I had found 3. -

I overcame my shame and squeezed through a couple of boxes of series 9 minifigs the other day in a gift shop aboard one of the ferries over the Baltic, managed to find some 2x2 tiles which supposedly belongs to the roman emperor. I think his torso and legs seems very Kaliphlin -
There is just so much to like about this build! My favourite is the chimney on the side with smoke

I have to agree a bit as well, DG you had some really good skills and a good feeling already before GoH (not least shown by your Crown Knights build), but GoH has of course been a way for us to admire your versatility And maybe for you to try out a few more techniques and ideas? -

I hadn't seen that de Gothia, do you mind sharing a link to that? (I suppose it is in Swedish, but if someone else wants to read it there is always Google Translate ) -
I really like both the gate and tavern, they have the right Cedrica feeling both in style and size. And your base design is awesome! A final word of praise for nice usage of the Hobbit minifigure parts as well :) But to me the last picture of the palace looks like interior, not the tavern?

I had seen "commercials" for GoH over at our Swedish LUG forum ever since Challenge I when primarely DG (and a few others who sadly seems to have become inactive) have been posting their MOCs there as well. But same for me as for Carson Haupt, I simply finally got around to joining now. I had been lurking here for a good while but were separated from my bricks for more than half of 2012 when I worked in another country... -

I am definitely jealous of you americans who seem to have a Lego store with PaB in every city worth of notice :P Here in Sweden they havn't opened a single one yet (Not even in Stockholm!), so my closest one is in Copenhagen 670 km (416 miles) away... Good thing I had enough creativity when raiding the Orlando PaB a year ago to pick up a few smaller tan plates, great for landscaping now :) -
Welcome to GoH! Great to see more people joining to make the next chapter of Historica's tale a vibrant one! And supposedly coming here to develop further and advance your boundaries as a builder? :) I like your composition of sigfig very much as well! A friendly word of advice (from someone who is struggling with the same issue) is to try to mind the direction of the light while taking your pictures, to avoid washed out areas of reflection. Once again, great to see more new people joining!!

Another great build from you! And another great build showing resistance to Revolword's forces! The houses are really nice, but I agree that the dark red and reddish brown is a little to close in color to really stand out.

The open ended nature is great with GoH, and I would prefer to keep it that way in the future as well. What I was thinking was that it's good when devising my own stories that I'm not contradicting what's already been built and accepted as some form of canon. Regardless of how much or little information we manage to put into the wiki I think it's great to have that as the canon of GoH so we can both use that to check for some form of coherence, and even more important as inspiration to build new innovative MOCs Great idea by the way to build in the past, I have been so absorbed by all the possibilities to build "in the present" and not really thought about that. -
Guilds of Historica Introduction/General Discussion Thread

One thing that held me back a good deal at the start (and I suppose still does to some extent) is that it is quite hard to know what can be built, and even more what can be written about the builds, without going against established knowledge about the Historica world. The wiki is a great thing, but feels a bit underused. For example the article 'Drow' doesn't seem to exist and I had a hard time with a lot of digging in the threads to find out what it was. Maybe a good idea for a start of "volume II" or whatever happens after challenge VI would be to sum up the more important lines of what has happened during the first part of GoH. Some more information on the races and culture of Historica would also be a good aid when creating main/side characters and MOCs. The most obvious way as I see it would be to do it on the wiki, but some sticky threads as today would also work. Of course it doesn't have to be a perfect or in any way complete summary, isn't there always a lot of conflicting facts and gaps when studying history? -

Well, we could always speculate in what is coming after challenge VI? Has there been any discussions as to how the GoH project should reinvent itself? I think it would be great if something could be done to make some of the people who were part of the start of GoH come back. Maybe do some more challenges on the scale of Challenge I which seems to have attracted a lot of people to produce entries. -
Wonderful concept with the resistance movement, I almost (but only almost) hope for a victory for Revolword in the official outcome of Challenge VI so we can have more time building stories like this when I see these builds

Wonderful tension you have captured there! The threat of imminent bloodshed is really present, there is so much to like here

Beautiful color scheme and structure of the walls! I really like the arch with rounded ends, minifig legs? -

Looks great! I like the size of the bridge, it truly feels to scale for the minifigs. Appropriate for the most important crossing of the Arkbri River. I am also working on build situated on the banks of that river (or maybe the Red River), remains to be seen if my build will be up to good enough standards to qualify as a challenge VI entry. -
Fantastic introduction! I especially like the first picture :) And welcome to GoH, nice to see more people like me step out of lurking, better late than never!

Wow, that's great news for us latecomers! However it also means that I don't have an excuse for only posting a few "one night builds" -

One of the many murals in the palaces of Petraea, this one depicting an equestrian hero in some famous or forgotten battle long ago. Built for another competition, but I figured it seemed Kaliphlin enough in style to be shown here (supposedly I'm a bit inspired to build Kaliphlin style right now) -
Both the color scheme and the almost total lack of straight angles are fantastic! And that wine press is just brilliant :)

Nice build! I always enjoy seeing civilian builds, since it usually takes some more creativity than my habitually militaristic approach to lego. Are the external trans-clear cheese slopes supposed to be diamonds or ice? To me it looks as a nice way of building some "winter's last melting ice" if that was the intention. I agree with SK that the fact that the water is higher is disturbing me a small bit, but then again mines often have dams for various purposes and the grey shoreline could be interpreted as a low dam as well ;)
