Nice lively scene, I agree with above that you have refined your building style in a good way...even though I think the old build uou showed here was really nice as well! Favorite detail in the new build is something as simple but elegant as the snot stairs into the water :)

Challenge VI: If only peace would come now...
Gideon replied to de Gothia's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great ch VI entry, both excellent builds and a good story! I like the ending with the joy of the marriage but still with a hint of darkness on the horizon with Murgol on the loose ;) Same as you my plans for Ch VI were derailed by the arrival of a little one (our first) stealing my time away from building... And same as you my plan now is to rush a fp third build and see if I can put the finishing touches on the other ones before the deadline. But thanks for showing that it can be done! :) -
Ooh! I sense some inter-guild tension building up, can't wait for the continuation! And great interior, I agree with DG that a full interior is a nice approach.

A Call to Arms: The Battle of Queenscross
Gideon replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Fantastic job creating and documenting the history of one of the pivotal points of Book I of GoH! Even though this wasn't a challenge-related entry I think that well done "events" like this should easily be included in the established canon of GoH :)- 123 replies

Really nice Varlyrian builds! It definitely makes me want to set one of my coming builds there, good thing I got hold of some conquistadors recently :) -
Darkmire Mill - Dark Isle Saga: Chapter 1, Part 6
Gideon replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great build as always! In addition to a lot that has already been mentioned, I really like the door on the house. Really nice effect with the ironwork on that one! But at least on my phone I can't seem to recognize the piece usen for the handle? -
A Call to Arms: The Battle of Queenscross
Gideon replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
I am just amazed at how much work you've put into this battle! Great work with the minifig posing, the game mechanics (had me biting my nails a few times there!) and the photography. And nice to see the tide finally turning in our favor, and that the merfolk did such a good job in rescuing my sigfig I'm trying to put together some last-minute ideas for a short challenge VI story, I assume that the notorious survivor Falconi managed to survive this as well since I didn't see him die? I will wait until you have posted the aftermath until I know if I should include him or not in the story. By the way: Be sure that slaying of the cyclops king isn't enough vengeance for Sir Gideon when his oldest friend was killed, he will now forever hate the cyclops and it remains to be seen where that will lead...- 123 replies

Great build overall, and especially great woodwork! I love the mallets on the roof :)
-
Great entry! I love the minifig posing, you've really captured some action there! Looking forward to the rest

Nice build! I like that you have made up a good story around it, and at least I can really feel myself zooming in from the birds eye perspective

I totally missed series 7 and 8, and honestly didn't buy so much CMFs in store before that either... So I'm pretty much stuck with buying overpriced CMF:s over BL, just paid around $10 each for a bunch of romans. Not a good deal at all, but I figured that it was now or never :( Having no lego store even in the country and no good supply in any other toy store either (the toy store in the town 1 hour away always has wrinkled bags from some other local AFOLs getting there before me ) Enough whining, now at least I found a few boxes of unsqueezed series 9 a while back while on a ferry over the Baltic sea, which got me a bunch of forest maidens, cyclops and some other assorted figs Series 10 has me totally worked up, not too excited by the distribution so far I've seen though... -
Nice little tower! The story makes me want to hear more of the AAG :)

Nice, I especially like the crumbled stonework and the irregular base with wedge plates (a technique I've started using recently as well, happy to give you credit for that if it's your previous work that sparked that idea in my head :) ). On a close look I agree that it looks a bit weird with brick pattern bricks on the horizontal SNOT part, but on the slanting top part it looks absolutely brilliant!

Excellent build, I love all of those uneven angles! That tree is just wow :)

Nice vignette, i really like your extensive use of SNOT techniques to make the terrain in your builds! I'm a little puzzled about the sloping water however?

A painting has been found, depicting another of Historica's beautiful cities being harrowed by the Hand of Corruption. One can only hope that some people got away, and not only as servants or slaves to the Hand... -
Really nice and diverse army! Has a very Kaliphlin feel to it :)

Thank you! This looks really simple and efficient :) But how stable is the rotation of the shield? Is it hanging straight by gravity or do you need to adjust it prior to shooting your pics?

Challenge VI- Not really an unexpected journey
Gideon replied to Maxim I's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice interior that fits well into your Mpya Stedor building style! Do you have an easy technique to surface-mount the shields like that? The one I used on my last build (first time I tried to hide the "shaft") was relatively piece consuming.- 45 replies

Yea, I could proably have put some more effort into the edges of the roof but didn't really consider that at the time I built this. At least if I could have bricklinked some black cheese slopes or other useful pieces and smoothed the edges or jagged them in a less blocky way What I did for the background was to cut away all the background with GIMP (carefully following the edges), which probably took closer to a quarter of an hour. The automatic functions however make it easy to do a decent job in just a few seconds if the backdrop color (in this case a white sheet) is far enough away in color from the objects to keep. I suppose I'm a bit too much of a perfectionist when I've put a larger number of hours into building, setting up and shooting the pictures so I find it worthwhile to do carefully. Anyway, when I'm finished with the cutting (or rather setting of transparency of the foreground layer) I just applied a second layer in behind with the background color(s). What I find hardest to make nice is not the top edge, there it is just to be a bit careful to keep a good edge, but the forward edge. I still havn't found a good technique to keep the shadows around the object to make it more natural. I would have preferred to have semi-transparent shadows which can look natural on whatever background nuance I choose.

That's what I suspected, the resolution is rarely the problem with today's cameras (or even smartphones). Its other factors that one has to be aware of, for example even though I've had a DSLR for quite a few years it's only recently I learnt to handle the depth of field reasonably well when photographing things like Lego... My advice is to do all editing on a copy of the image of the original size, and only reduce the resolution on the final edit when preparing it for publication. Nowadays I usually let Flickr do that for me

Thank you all for the encouragement! I would also appreciate some feedback on how to improve my building/presentation (on this or in the future). After all, isn't one of the main drivers for GoH to improve as MOC builders? At least for me it is. For example: In this case, I cut the edges quite sharp. Would it have been better to make them slightly fuzzier to keep more of the natural shadows, at risk of keeping some of the background material? And what do you think of this plain light gray background vs the graded background I used for Falcon's Nest?
