Making holes in custom capes
AmperZand replied to Solscud007's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
cetanhota, I suspect that PVA works just as well as Modge-Podge but costs less. It's important to use pH neutral PVA which is sold for DIY rather than PVA sold as school glue which is quite acidic. Amps -
Lego Minifigure things they can improve?
AmperZand replied to BrickG's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Short articulated legs already exist, you just have to be willing to go with third party parts. Brick Fortress ( http://www.brickfortress.com ) does excellent ones. -
As both a fan of the Lord of the Rings and of yellow minifigs, I had to mod my minifigs of the Fellowship of the Ring to change their skin tone. Along the way, I also added some third party pieces such as the BrickForge staff and sword for Gandalf, and the BrickArms sword for Boromir. I actually created these minifigs a long time ago but have only recently got the IT necessary to post the pic below. Since the picture was taken, I have made a few additional changes such as removing Frodo's tear. Hope you like the minifigs!

Didn't know the croissant was available in white. Looking forwards to seeing your pictures of these columns in LEGO.

I think that the minifig is based on the Wukong character from the computer game which was inspired by the character Monkey from the Japanese telly series from the late '70s (which itself is based on Journey to the West). The Monkey character in the telly series could look pretty angry at times, especially just before a fight, so the minifig seems fine to me in that regard. The minifig's hair is great by the way.

Here's my Uruk-Hai army. It's just one group of minifigures but shown in two shots. I'm not a purist, so you'll see some custom parts such as some BrickWarriors helmets and BrickArms pole arms. Saruman wanted his army back, but I told him to #~@I< off! http://www.brickshel...y_-_montage.jpg And here's my Uruk general and champion: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/AmperZand/Fantasy/uruk_general_and_champion_-_cropped.jpg

Although I really like the Dragon Mountain set, I wasn't crazy about the open access from the front to the chamber on the left side, so I modded it. I built up the front but didn't want to block access completely, so I turned it into a secret entrance/exit. Apologies for the poor picture quality. My camera is a bit rubbish.

Copyright/design rights subsist on top of existing intellectual property. The owners or Marvel comics and TLG could stop you from commercialising the design but in the unlikely event that they did allow it, you would still have rights in the supplemental creative expression.

Excluding online stores (e.g. BrickLink, BrickForge, BrickWarriors, BrickFortress), my favourites are: - Brickset - Classic Castle - Brick Fanatics - Brickish Association - YouTube YouTube isn't in the same mould as the others but it does have some great set reviews and other information of interest to FOLs. And yes, I left EB out on purpose.

Quick check: LDD or real bricks?
AmperZand replied to Mataroa's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Funny you should say that Mataora because LDD seems to get too much love at EB. I have lost count of the number of threads about LDD MOCs that aren't marked "[LDD]" and the mods do nothing about it. LDD is fine as a step towards creating real MOCs but should never be an end in itself or pass itself off as the real thing. -
Pilgrims would be cool. I'd change the head, give him a mallet & stake and voila: a vampire-hunter.

Horror Stories - Lego you bought off flea-bay and BL
AmperZand replied to DrJB's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I order from BL quite a lot and very occasionally from EBay. I only ever order new parts. I once got someone else's order from a BL seller instead of the one I had placed. I returned the wrong order while the seller sent the right one, so it all ended well. He was very apologetic. Another time, I didn't get the invoice from a BL seller for a couple of weeks. I tried to reach her several time during that period but didn't get a reply. Eventually, she responded saying that she was on holiday, had forgotten to change her BL site and would send me the invoice in 10 more days. She made it clear that she thought it was all very funny. I didn't agree. The parts were fine so I didn't leave negative feedback but I was very tempted. I sometimes get different parts from the ones I ordered but the sellers have always been cool about sending the right parts ASAP. My experience of both BL and EBay has been almost always positive. I've had more problems ordering directly from TLG. Their customer service team are really friendly but their pickers are less than competent. -
fred67, You forgot the Revolutionary Soldier as having a US vibe. But I've got to disagree that the Sea Captain is distinctly American. That trope is common to many countries. Birdseye, the frozen food company, used to advertise fishfingers in the UK using a character who looked very much like the minifig. I doubt many people will begrudge the inclusion of Lincoln as being too American any more than they would resent Shakespeare's inclusion for being too English, or from earlier series, the Samurai, Sumo Wrestler, Geisha and Ninja for being too Japanese, the Viking for being too Nordic, the Leprechaun for being too Irish, the Highlander and Bagpiper for being too Scottish, the Lederhosen Guy and Dirdnl Girl for being too Teutonic etc. Apologies if the above is a digression. I didn't mean to threadjack.

How do you wash your LEGO... Seriously?
AmperZand replied to DrJB's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Perhaps unusually, I wash new parts (I don't buy used) but only when they're BAM parts from the Lego store or have an odour from BrinkLink/EBay. For those who think that cleaning BAM parts is neurotic, I have found bits of cookies and sweet wrappers among the LEGO parts. Yuck! I wash parts in a small plastic tub using washing up liquid and warm water. I rinse the parts by running them under a tap then dry them by shaking off any excess water, patting them with tissues (the kind without added oils) and then air drying them shielded from sunlight. I really like Dragon Mountain - it's going to be one of the highlights of my collection. Apart from the catapults (that never impressed me in Lego) and the open access from the front and exposed treasure chest on the left of the structure (which I modded to create a secret entrance), this is a classic set. As for the recolouring, with respect, I prefer the red & black colour scheme. Somehow red and black are more sinister than dark green. And I really don't like dragons wearing armour. Dragons are supposed to have impenetrable hides as it is, so no need for armour. Besides, armour is heavy and would make flying harder. Amps

How Many Mirkwood Elf Army Sets Do You Plan on Buying?
AmperZand replied to Deathleech's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I bought 2 UHAs (one full price, the other discounted), over 30 UH polies (through a newspaper promo), and some additional elves and elf parts on BL. I also traded a couple of superhero polies for a couple of Mirkwood elf polies.- 102 replies

In the UK, retailers only have to tell you where something is made/produced if asked. In practice, almost all products indicate where they are from. In the case of LEGO, the box/packet lists all the countries the contents are from but not in detail which elements are from which country. The law may be different in Switzerland.

How Many Mirkwood Elf Army Sets Do You Plan on Buying?
AmperZand replied to Deathleech's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
One if I can get it at a significant discount (from Amazon or Argos). I'll consider an extra warg through BL or EBay, again, depending on price.- 102 replies

BTTF and the Elusive White Minifigure Hair
AmperZand replied to MKJoshA's topic in General LEGO Discussion
If you're willing to go with 3rd party products, BrickForge does high quality hairpieces in white such as: https://www.brickforge.com/store/product.php?productid=17121&cat=421&page=1 Arealight also does white hair, e.g. http://www.arealightcustoms.com/shop/White-Breezy-Hair.html Hope those help! I totally agree. The point of the scene is lost without Merry. In online fora and in face-to-face discussions, it surprises and saddens me how few people understand what Tolkien intended this scene to be about.

I contacted TLG's European customer service team as both arms of my dragon from Dragon Mountain 70403 had a cosmetic flaw at the shoulder: four black dots arranged in a square shape. They promptly sent me a pair of replacements at no charge. Unfortunately, the replacements had the same flaw, but I can't fault the customer service team. They were fast and friendly.
