  1. Congratulations, ablake90! I was going to suggest Arwen even before I saw that you had already thought of it. Although it's completely Tolkien, it sounds Welsh (not by coincidence), so will not sound geeky except to those who are LotR knowledgeable. If I had a daughter and if my fiancée agreed, I would consider calling her Arwen.
  2. This thread http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=84191#entry1637106 got me thinking about AFOLdom and education. Are AFOLs more educated (formal number of years in education or highest qualification held) than non-FOL adults? I suspect that they are but that's just conjecture on my part. Does anyone have any empirical evidence? Do you have suspicions one way or the other? I'm guessing that because LEGO is putatively a kid's toy, non-FOL adults think AFOLs are educationally sub-normal, but that the reality is just the opposite, i.e. we're educationally above average. What do you think? Hope I'm posting this in the right forum. Apologies if not.
  3. Great MOC, Dr lisqr! Very creative and brilliantly realised. Do you have a link to the comic? PhD does indeed stand for Piled High & Deep. It comes after BS - Bull $h!+ - and MS - More $h!+ Dr AmperZand
  4. I'm a Dwarf . Makes sense; it's my favourite race in the fantasy genre.
  5. The odour will fade over time by itself. I live in an old building and my downstairs neighbour's cigarette smoke sometimes wafts up to my place making my LEGO smell bad. After a few days, there's no more odour - and I have a super sensitive sense of smell.
  6. Brilliant! I don't know if anyone has ever turned Mondrian's paintings into sculpture before (in any medium), but if not, this MOC is inspired.
  7. 6020 Wizard Shop http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6020-1 I was already collecting fantasy themed toys (and still do). I saw this set as well as a Castle accessory set and thought they'd make a great addition to my collection. Gradually, the number of minifigs I was getting grew and grew. And eventually collecting LEGO minifigs and buildings turned into a hobby of mine in its own right.
  8. As I already said, I suspect the Yeti's head is two parts. One of the reasons I think that it's two pieces is that printing the eyes in a recess is more complicated (and therefore more expensive) than printing them on a flat or protruding surface. Also, the overall size of the head suggests a standard head inside. If it were one piece (like the Minotaur's) is could be smaller or more shaped. Lastly, the area around the eyes is flat suggesting a standard head. But as I said previously, I could be wrong.
  9. With respect, I disagree. I only have the picture to go on so I could be wrong, but I suspect it's two parts: a standard head in blue and a separate hair/beard/lower jaw piece in white. I hope I'm right as I've already ordered a white hair piece on BL to create a variant Yeti (in addition to the standard one in S11).
  10. Nice job, Karlson! TLG's sets, while often great, are not as substantial as the subject matter warrants. Your doubling up of the Council of Elrond set elegantly illustrates that. The way you have done it makes the scene complete. By the way, if you would like to seat your dwarves and if you're not a purist, you may like to know that BrickFortress produces articulated short legs.
  11. Cool! Although practically any minifig could be Mystique. I have about 600 minifigs of Mystique in my display collection including her as various LotR, DC and SW characters.
  12. Great review and pictures, oo7. Thanks for that. "...the two light bluish gray inverted slopes on the far end of the wizard's hut mirror the two on the other side supporting the bridge but don't attach to anything..." I suspect there'll be another set later this year or next that connects to the seemingly useless inverted slopes. If not, you could use them with a second Dragon Mountain set to mirror the existing structure (sans wizard's hut), i.e. tower-bridge-hut-bridge-tower. Amps
  13. I pronounce them: AFOL: ah-foll MOC: mock Vignette: vin-yet Lego: leg-o with AFOLs and other friends, but lay-go with family. My ex-brother in law is Danish and a former TLG employee. I've been trained in the Danish pronunciation! Ninjago: ninja-go Bionicle: by-on-ik-ul CUUSOO: koo-soh - I actually pronounce it as the Japanese word it's meant to be. It's tricky to represent Japanese phonetics in written English.
  14. I have only ever hung small MOCs. I either use black or clear non-stretch nylon beading string. I use two loops, one under each wing and attach them to one fixing point. By using different loop lengths, I can adjust the roll. Adjusting the up/down angle is simply a matter of angling the MOC. If you're hanging minifigs, you have to make sure that the rope (string) is the right length. Too long and the head will come right off, making a mess all over the place. Too short and the minifig will die slowly from strangulation which is "cruel and unusual". Note that only fleshy minifigs should be hanged. Yellow minifigs deserve to live forever.
  15. Thanks, Gremer. Below are my favourites. I've gone up to 10 but feel free to ignore 6-10. 1. Elf 2. Medusa 3. Ocean King 4. Cyclops 5. Musketeer 6. Minotaur 7. Forest Maiden 8. Gladiator 9. Evil Knight 10. Werewolf
  16. Gremer, Very cool topic but you should have left the poll open longer. A week or so would probably have been about right. I would have voted but saw your thread too late.
  17. No, it's not just you, Captain. If memory serves, BrickQueen said the same thing in her YouTube review.
  18. If they're not already, I'm sure the minifigs will become available on BrickLink. Some of them won't be cheap, but they will cost a lot less than buying all the sets. I'm planning on getting Dragon Mt mostly for the dragon and minifigs.
  19. I'm not keen on the catapults (or any LEGO catapults) but otherwise I completely agree. I regard the buildings as backdrops/props for the minifigs & dragon. Yes, the price is a bit steep but it does contain the best dragon TLG has ever produced in a new print. I'm thinking of getting two copies: one for me and one for my nephews. And I have recommended it to a friend for his son.
  20. Not just any old MOCs, these are works of art. Fantastic in every sense!
  21. That would be funny and would warrant a smiley face if the OP hadn't already accounted for it.
  22. If you'll be in London next Thursday evening and are interested in swaping/buying/selling minifigs and other Lego parts, a group of AFOLs is meeting on Oxford Street. Details here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=82244
  23. Please join me and several other AFOLs for the May 2013 London Minifigure Swap-Meet. We will be trading S10 CMFs, older CMFs, other minifigures, third-party (BrickForge, BrickWarriors) pieces and general LEGO parts. When: Thursday, 16 May 2013, 6.30pm Where: Meet at the LEGO section, Toy Department, John Lewis Oxford Street, London, UK. After making a few purchases from JL, we will be moving to the café on the floor above. If you're after a specific S10 minifigure, please post below ASAP. We can likely help with most of them except Mr Gold
  24. Ray Harryhausen, creator of classic movie special effects including the cyclops in the Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, the medusa in the original Clash of the Titans and the skeletons in the original Jason and the Argonauts has died in London at the age of 92. You might not think that Harryhausen has anything to do with LEGO, but I'm guessing that Harryhausen's concepts inspired the S10 Medusa and influenced the S9 Cyclops. I will be giving my Medusa a bow and quiver in tribute to Harryhausen.
  25. The thought of a kitchen MOC didn't really appeal to me when I saw the thread's title. I'm into fantasy/history/super-heroes. But now that I have opened the thread and seen the pic, I am seriously impressed. This is a brilliant piece of work! The detailing is phenomenal. I especially like the dish rack & dishes and paper towel roll & holder. Thank you for sharing!
