What sets do you think are a good investment right now?
AmperZand replied to Lasivian's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I don't buy LEGO with a view to reselling it in future, but do look at prices out of curiosity. In addition to AFOLguy1970's excellent suggestion of paying Brickpicker a visit, you may want to pick up a copy (hard or PDF) of Blocks magazine. In it, there's a Review Chart with scores out of 100 for about 150 current sets (pages 66 & 67 of Issue 25 for example). Any set that: 1. scores at least 80 and is either 2a. from a perennial or recurring theme such as Pirates or 2b. from an enduring popular culture franchise such as Star Wars or Marvel Super Heroes or 2c. includes a unique or rare minifig, bigfig or moulded monster is a pretty good bet. Examples include 76057 Spider-Man Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Battle, 76058 Spider-Man Ghost Rider Team-Up, 75112 General Grievous, 70413 The Brick Bounty, 31052 Vacation Getaways, 75827 Firehouse Headquarters, 21304 Doctor Who and 71016 Kwik-E Mart. -
Will Blu Tack/sticky tack stain LEGO?
AmperZand replied to AmperZand's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Yes, that would be very much appreciated, Wolfpack Bandit. I'm intrigued what you find out. By the way, you have a cool user name. Sounds like you tried it, Giantorange. How long was the sticky tack there before you removed it, and did you use soap and water to remove the stain or did it require something stronger? -
Forum Upgrade - One Month Later
AmperZand replied to Bonaparte's topic in Forum Information and Help
I used to find interspersing responses between quotes on the old desktop version quite a bit easier than now. I did it a couple of days ago in response to a series of questions about some CMFs I MOCed and I struggled to get it right. I managed eventually, but it really wasn't straightforward. As for the mobile version, the old main Forum index URL now goes to News forum from which it is pretty difficult and sometimes impossible to get to the other fora. If you have the old index URL as your favourite, you need to update that or you'll get stuck. Until I worked that out, I was using Google to navigate the new mobile version. -
Will Blu Tack/sticky tack stain LEGO?
AmperZand replied to AmperZand's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Thanks, dr_spock! That's very helpful. Blu Tack can leave what appears to be a grease stain or dark patch on walls. Was there anything like that on your second hand Spidey? -
Blu Tack, the adhesive putty normally used to put posters up, can leave stains on walls. If you use it to hold two ABS pieces of LEGO together, will it leave a mark on the LEGO when you remove it? Even after a long time?

Latest CMF series impact on Historic themes
AmperZand replied to SirBlake's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
The sword is LEGO. The scabbard is by SI-DAN as is the waist piece to which it is attached but you can't see well in the picture. Yes, the berserker is MOC. The wolf-skin hood and battle axe are BrickWarriors. The head and torso are S15 LEGO. The legs are also LEGO but I can't remember where I got them. The samurai is mostly an S15 kendoka but with BrickWarriors parts: their samurai helmet, Roman plume and katana. If you were hoping my creations were purist, I'm sorry but they're not. -
Looks really promising! I especially like the appearance of the ship. If I may offer a couple of suggestions: there should be a Trojan horse as well as more identifiable characters such as Odysseus and Menelaus.

ABS, the plastic from which most LEGO parts are made, is pretty acid resistant. It's extremely unlikely that storing LEGO in baggies would damage the parts in any way. I suspect that the figures damaged by bags in the wider toy collecting world aren't made of ABS. For the record, I'm neither a chemist nor a materials scientist. I have stored some LEGO parts in grip-seal small component baggies for 15+ years. Not only have the parts not been damaged by the baggies, they have been protected from dust and scratching by them.

Lego Catalogs from Japan or Australia?
AmperZand replied to moschino's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I have definitely had a Japanese catalogue but it was about 10 years ago and was current at the time. I got it from a store in the outskirts of Tokyo. I'm not sure if I still have it. I'm not aware of any Japanese LEGO catalogues from the '80s or '90s, but that's not to say they don't exist. Perhaps the best person to ask is JapanBuilder right here on the EB boards. -
What few people realise is that minifigs are small, cute Autons. They're dormant now but will indeed be taking over the world when they are activated! Cue Doctor Who music...

Latest CMF series impact on Historic themes
AmperZand replied to SirBlake's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
My MOCed historical/fantasy Series 16 CMFs with some thematically appropriate additional figs. -
Ooooh, Sauran's headpiece is cool! If you made it available separately, i.e. without the minifigure and Brickforge weapon, and in black, not bley, I would be very interested.

How does water effect Lego bricks?
AmperZand replied to Tracytron's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I'm not a materials scientist but as far as I know, ABS is not directly affected by water in the sense that there's no chemical (e.g. swelling or softening) or mechanical (e.g. absorbing) effect. You could keep a piece of LEGO in distilled water indefinitely without any damage to the part. As you point out, there are biological concerns such as algae and mould. I don't know if they can affect ABS. I suspect not. You can probably remove algae from LEGO with a quick application of vinegar followed by a rinse of distilled water. And mould is killed by sunlight - though that might discolour your LEGO. If LEGO is exposed to hard water, it will eventually become dull and may even show carbonate deposits, i.e. limescale. But the calcium/magnesium carbonate from water is superficial on ABS. Again, vinegar followed by a rinse of distilled water will restore your LEGO. As an aside, liquid aspirin (and maybe even aspirin dissolved in water) and liquid paracetamol will cause ABS to swell in theory. In the extremely unlikely event that your LEGO were swollen by either, I reckon the damage would be irreversible.- 8 replies

It may be obvious to you because you're clearly quite skilled in CAD/rendering so know what to look for, but it isn't obvious to everyone. And it's not a matter of intelligence. It has to do with knowledge of CAD/rendering and LEGO, and one's ability to see the images well. As this is an AFOL site, perhaps we can assume a certain knowledge of LEGO (though even that may be unfair to newcomers to the hobby). As for knowledge of CAD/rendering, there's no reason at all to suppose that being a FOL is related to it. You don't have to pass a CAD test to buy LEGO and discuss it online. And some people may be viewing the images on mobile devices with small screens or may have visual impairments. For all the people who can't immediately determine they are renders for whatever reason, you should state it up front. I'm sure it wasn't your intention to deceive, but that can be the effect with CADs/renders. Rendering LEGO is not strictly speaking part of AFOLdom. The hobby definitionally involves LEGO, but CAD/rendering doesn't. One could be a CADesigner/renderer of LEGO and never have even touched a piece of LEGO in real life. A CAD/render may be a useful step towards completing a MOC in LEGO, but it isn't LEGO. LEGO is a physical product. CAD/rendering isn't physical, it's digital. If sufficient numbers of people switched to CAD/rendering LEGO instead of getting the real thing, either TLG would go bust or would have to change its business model. CAD/renders may inspire people to buy LEGO, but if not and sufficient numbers are content with CADs/renders alone, that's bad news for TLG and for hobbyists like me who value real LEGO.

I don't keep an inventory or catalogue, but I would guess about 600 - 700 in my display collection and a further 300 - 400 either assembled or in parts in my spares. Without wanting to trigger a digression, it does beg the question of what counts as a minifig. Do bigfigs count? Skeletons? Brick-built robots? The new babies?

That's very well designed but is it real? It looks like it may be CAD (LDD?) renders. If so, you should state that up front in the thread's title.

[MOC/mod] Series 16 Collectable Minifigures
AmperZand replied to AmperZand's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
BrickForge. You're right which is why since taking the picture I have replaced Spidey's legs with dual-moulded ones that I got on BrickLink. I don't have an updated picture of him though. -
I do that too! I do mirror to keep MOCs symmetrical and try to hide even the tiniest imperfections such as separation marks. My most obsessive behaviour when it comes to LEGO is never exposing my display collection or spare parts to sunlight (except when I'm deliberately resetting the colour of white pieces). My aversion to sunlight exposure is so strong that I only build at night and keep my collection is a windowless room. Unlike some OCD-AFOLs I'm not a purist: I do use third party pieces. And I use LEGO anachronistically such as when I recreate this 1981 set. The front lights are supported by the newer, sturdier kind of modified 1 x 1 plate, not the thinner one from the early '80s.

Why do torso neck pins have a printed rectangle?
AmperZand replied to TheBear's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Are you sure? I could be misremembering - it was a long time ago after all - but I don't think the earliest minifigures had their necks marked when they were released in the late '70s. I had some of the Classic Space minifigures back then and recall being intrigued by the neck markings when that started appearing some time later. -
REVIEW: 71013 LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 16
AmperZand replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Wow, well spotted! I wanted to see how close the LEGO map was to the real thing, so I created a side-by-side and it's very close! I wonder if the hiker's map is a real place. Obviously, there's no track called the Greeble Trail but I can imagine that the rest might really exist. -
My guess is that there will be a soft opening in early November with no hullabaloo or event-specific promo items, but that's purely conjecture. As already noted in this thread, the grand opening will be Thursday, 17 November. I'm further guessing - and it's only a guess - that the grand opening promo will either be a Lester minifigure or minifigure/key-chain.

REVIEW: 71013 LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 16
AmperZand replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Great review and pictures, Fangy! Your review may have been later than some hoped, but still very much appreciated. The swashbuckler could be added to your Different sea encounter line up. His belt buckle is a ship's steering wheel suggesting a maritime connection. The rogue is also my favourite of Series 16, but he should have come with a cape. It would have made him just a bit more complete. No, it fits a bar/light sabre blade. You can't use it to create a microcephalic minifigure. I recall seeing some funny creations here on the EB boards of a minidoll and Scooby Doo with their heads swapped with the baby's. I'm not sure who posted those pictures or exactly where. @CopMike, It's "rogue", not "rouge". "Rouge" is blusher make-up from the French for "red". -
LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 16 poll
AmperZand replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I agree! I MOCed the rogue more than any other S16 minifigure as seen in this thread: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=140048 . I'm not going to re-post the pictures here unless requested as I've probably posted them too many times already on the EB forums and might get in trouble with the mods if I post them again. -
Digging thru the history about LEGO...
AmperZand replied to LEGO Historian's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Apologies for reviving an old thread, but I thought this would be the best place to post this. I visited a toy museum in Denmark last month, hoping to see lots of LEGO. Unfortunately, this is all the LEGO they had: I think it's 306 or 1306 but with a second black car instead of a red one and with the parking sign replaced, or is it a different set altogether? The labelling in the museum just said it was LEGO from the 1950s. -
Great pictures and review, Fangy! It's not a bad set, but I've never liked Buck House all that much. Now if LEGO did an external St Pancras Station...
