  1. i've always associated this set with 6929, the Voyager. they're of the same timeframe and more or less the same style. 6927 is without any doubt my favourite ground vehicle of space. it was pretty simple, but it was such a creative set. the stories you could tell with this model... g... most defenitely in my top 5 of space sets...
  2. i'd say the galaxy explorer is one of the only sets that made legendary status, next to yellow castle, the first big pirate ship and the red monorail... it's difficult to explain what's so great about it. is it the color combination? the roomy cockpit? the playability? ... I don't really know... you just look at it and see that it all fits... every piece of the puzzle is exactly where it's supposed to be... You don't just design this, at some point you recognice it's there, at some point, you realise you've created a legend... Sure, Lego could easily produce models that are far better detailed, not as heavy, in a larger variaty of colors and they'd probably add a bunch of technic bricks in there too. And it's even not the most popular set of all time, according to the popularity charts on the internet. but still, there's something that makes this set timeless, not only through the eyes of space fans but to the entire community of fans. The Galaxy Explorer has reached cult status... Often people build this set in other colors, with other techniques or different sizes, but the essence remains the same, everybody still recognices the classic lines of the Galaxy Explorer. It's not a coincidence that this model is part of Lego's own museum in Billund, it's more than a classic, it was the first star of Lego's Space line back in 1978, it turned the entire line into a huge success. The impact of the set not only on the fans, but also on Lego and her products cannot be overestimated... In fact, since then, every space ship has been compared to this spaceship and none came close. If there's one thing I wish for Lego and the space fans, let's just pretend it's New Year, i wish for a talented designer who can create a set like this for all of us to be releaseed next year... The Galaxy Explorer has become a cult model, it's no longer seen through the eyes of critical fans, it's a model you don't question anymore. it's an icon.
  3. hmmm.... i probably would not have bought this as a kid in 1987, unless i had money to spare or the shop had no other set from space or castle, the two other big lines in 1987, and no better set in the town section. i think it's a great parts pack, but the model itself does not look very attractive. I never really liked those wheels, honestly. They're from the basic sets, mostly, and they work pretty well in those, but i'm just not a fan... the roof, on the other hand, was very popular and the blue modified bricks at the front were quite rare in those days, but generally speaking, this was not the star of 1987. gave it a "3"
  4. first, what i liked sooooo much was the cover of these plates, with this large picture of a classic space scene. I still have a '306' misb just to keep that nice feeling of taking it out of a plastic box, and look at it... there were different versions of the cover though. second, the markings of the landing platform changed at some point. i'd have to check it later when i'm at home, think it had something to do with the interupted yellow lines...
  5. ah... so it seems i was too late then to get you into buying some older than MM sets... i've always been very fond of the 'life on mars' trike, the original trike set, not the MM trike, which was basically a reproduced, but less refined/sophisticated model... i guess the dropship isn't that bad, it just doesn't do it for me. In any case, it seems Lego is dropping the MM all together, so if you really want MM sets, now is the time to get them...
  6. well some of the bases are mobile, so you don't have to stick to a base. but yeah, it's not so easy to construct something really good looking and original... i haven't built a space base since i was 12 i think... they're just so .... boring...
  7. hm.... this vault is basically just a VIP vault, imo. it's not Lego's archive. I've been there a few times now and sure, it looks as if this vault has quite a lot of sets, but several are missing as well and it's not entirely sorted per year. The story goes that all sets lego produces for the global market end up in this room. The vault is "owned" by Lego's legal department, in case Lego needs to be able to show/build specific sets in the context of a law suit against piracy,... So it's not Lego's archive where they keep all documents and sets ever created, but it's most defenetely worth a visit. Still, only a few people get in...
  8. 17 euro? i'll let this one go then... after all, for me, it would basically mean 17 euro for a red space dude... hmmm...
  9. i bought this one at the event in Billund. it's not all that interesting, honestly... I guess it's nice to look through once in a while, but nothing more...
  10. i'm a bit confused as to why everybody seems to love this set. to me, it looks like a fairly basic model, even for a playset... Looks quite expensive too...
  11. do you know how much a set like that would cost today? a set this size with these type of bricks and monorails could easily reach a 200 euro price tag. no way a set like that would sell well, not even as exclusive. Sorry people, but monorails are something of the past...
  12. when i saw the first pics of the set quite some time ago, i thought it looked pretty nice. I'm not so convinced about that anymore, now that i've seen it from upclose. they tried to turn it into an "ice planet - the next generation space ship" but it lacks some degree of sophistication. It's not just the giant wing, it's the large number of big parts in general... And swooshing this thing around, in the nude or not, is just not on...
  13. think this is a pretty nice set! a good way to get lots of tracks and it seems to have loooots of playability. i just have my doubts about the commercial potential of the series all together though. it seems to me that all sets are simply "stand alone" sets.
  14. i'm surprised it's that much of a problem, honestly. Sure, the tracks and the engine may be a problem, but all the rest looks like normal stuff to me... in any case good luck with it!
  15. i'm just not sure if you can create this shape in reality, honestly. the reason why some didn't connect may have something to do with the angles of the sections....
  16. the two sets are here in belgium as well... didn't buy them though with the event coming up, but they look pretty cool... didn't see the price of the tracked vehicle, but the space ship was 90 euro...
  17. saw Indy 4 last evening. great entertainment but nothing more. i don't think it'll be the best or most unforgettable film of the year or anything, just a nice film, that's all. i was kinda surprised to see how much Indy has become an old man... The young, dynamic hero of the past looks tired and ready to retire... at least that's the impression i got from him... disappointing really the story itself is bollocks, obviously... this film is basically a mixture of all sorts of modern and ancient myths, like El dorado, Roswell, UFO, Nazca, a supercivilisation as a base for Mayan culture, ... but at least i wasn't bored or anything...
  18. great to hear everything's going the right way again for you! life has these moments when you really feel you're pretty close to falling into the deep... just remember, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger! and btw, you don't owe us any explenation, Eurobricks is like a bar, you'll always be welcome, even if you've been away for quite some time, no worries... we're not your mother-in-law who's looking over your shoulder every second of the day, we just come here to relax, complain about Lego decisions and have a ball...
  19. well, Indy sets are licensed sets, they're always ridiculously expensive, no question there... in the case of the space sets, it's basically "let's take as much money as we can on a couple of exclusive space sets" and sure, probably on a few others too. right now, the price difference between dollar and euro doesn't even have anything to do with any rational costs, like VAT, it's simply that dollar has decreased in value against euro, but Lego in return, did not change the euro prices... until now, so it seems... On the other, i just read on Belug that Lego is going increase her prices of several sets due to rising costs of production... Oil, for instance, has become very expensive...
  20. well i'd go for the LDD... i don't think the sets are worth the current price either. good parts, nice models, just not what i'm looking for as a space fan
  21. me too, but i guess they'll have it at the park too, so i'm not worried...
  22. well i'd be happy with a mixed package of classic space, pirates and (classic)castle but now that we do have a classic space dude back into the production line, i'm kinda hoping for a rerelease of an older space set in this 50 years of lego project. same goes for the firefighter
  23. well i think it's good news, honestly. the price settings of these sets were pretty weird after all. I mean, they both cost 100 dollars/100euro, even though everybody knows 100 dollars does not equal 100 euro. I think Lego just realised they pushed it a little bit too much with these set prices, hoping space fans would buy them at practically any cost. They changed the price to a more realistic one when that didn't happen.
  24. well i guess it's kinda obvious why they're not into these small things anymore: smaller profit, less attractive and just as much effort needed to market them...
