Welcome to EuroBricks!
-
Hey, welcome to EB! A lot of my LEGO/internet friends seem to be from Australia, oddly (), so I hope you can become one of them! I've never been to Sydney, sadly. I've visited Cairns, it was beautiful, I hope to make another trip someday and hit Sydney and some of the other sights outside of Queensland. So again, welcome to EuroBricks! Enjoy your stay!
-
Wait, you recommended Historica but didn't mention Heroica RPG? I'm shocked, I tell you, shocked! Anyway, welcome to Eurobricks, and as you might have guessed, you'll likely want to join our awesome Heroica RPG in the Games section. I hope to see you there!

On the contrary, I find it interesting how similar or dissimilar our Heroica characters are to the results of the survey. D&D is, thematically, quite similar to Heroica, so the survey really puts things to "how similar are you to your Heroica character?"
-
I actually joined EB because of this and the LDD set index. I'd lurked on and off for a while, and when I saw Heroica my decision was made. EDIT: Check the raw stats, I found that Arthur/me is only one point shy of being an Elf and another point shy of being a half-elf. Even more interesting was the close scores in the alignment category--all but the Evil alignments are within two points of each other, and the spread was very erratic. I guess you could say I'm hard to classify. (I'm surprised it didn't just spit out true neutral, though, perhaps it only considers "deliberate balance" to be true neutral.)

Wow, this is eerily similar to Arthur... I Am A: Chaotic Good Human Bard/Wizard (2nd/1st Level) Ability Scores: Strength-10 Dexterity-14 Constitution-9 Intelligence-18 Wisdom-15 Charisma-14 Alignment: Chaotic Good A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him. He makes his own way, but he's kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations. He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do. He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with that of society. Chaotic good is the best alignment you can be because it combines a good heart with a free spirit. However, chaotic good can be a dangerous alignment when it disrupts the order of society and punishes those who do well for themselves. Race: Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like. Primary Class: Bards often serve as negotiators, messengers, scouts, and spies. They love to accompany heroes (and villains) to witness heroic (or villainous) deeds firsthand, since a bard who can tell a story from personal experience earns renown among his fellows. A bard casts arcane spells without any advance preparation, much like a sorcerer. Bards also share some specialized skills with rogues, and their knowledge of item lore is nearly unmatched. A high Charisma score allows a bard to cast high-level spells. Secondary Class: Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells. Ooh, time for a TV Tropes link! Also, I'm really pleased with the good roleplaying I've been able to do lately. Although I'm constantly paranoid Doc will pull this on us...

Heroica RPG - Quest #17: The Lion's Share
Flipz replied to Brickdoctor's topic in The Heroica Archive
Arthur decides to write in his book. To his surprise, De'kra has already written him. Arthur waits a moment, then begins to pen his response. Arthur shuts the book, pauses in contemplation for a moment, and then goes to find Althior. He finds his master in discussion with Arasmyth, the other Mage who accompanied them. "Althior, I need to ask you something...what do you know about scrying? Do you think it would be possible to scry on the party of Heroes accompanying my friend De'kra? He says one of their Heroes recently lost their memory, and I think...well, I had a gut feeling...that somehow it's related to...him." With Arasmyth present, it would not be prudent to discuss Abraxas and the Mark, not directly. "If it is, if he's making a move, we may have more than Elves to deal with." -

*COUGH* Could someone pweeeeeeeeease post links to the afterlife and/or scum writeboards? Thanks! -
Not to mention, something that hard and that pointy would be sharp--and if it was so brittle it broke off in the wound...

Hmm...*scribble scribble* Yeah, that's the quote. I probably would have tried to sneak a Princess Bride reference in there, but I hadn't seen it recently enough to think of one. I've remedied that now. Well, I hinted at some stuff (and I think there's some stuff in the first few days I'll sweep under the rug retcon anyway), but I never posted a full explanation; I always wanted to reveal stuff over time. I'm still not going to reveal everything, but I'll add some notes in a spoiler. Most of this is true backstory, stuff that either Arthur doesn't know about or just wouldn't ever think to tell anyone. And, in case anyone's wondering where the "different" perspective is showing up, note that Arthur is generally kind and gentle, and yet he had no qualms whatsoever about killing someone, nor about making these horrific death weapons. Food for thought, anyway!

I basically took every epic motivational line I could think of from film and literature and then stitched it together with my own material. There's a Dinotopia quote in there as well, though in a far more epic use than it in the original (which makes sense, given the Dinotopian pacifism, though I digress).

Arthur looks to Althior, nods once, and shakes Althior's hand. He was ready to learn. -
How about this?

I suddenly envision children en masse wearing band-aids over fingers they punctured with the tips of hard plastic shurikens... I do want some shurikens in black and gray, though--gold can get old. Actually, now that I think of it... "A mysterious sorcerer is stealing the color from Ninjago! Only the five Ninja and Samurai X can stop them!" (Sort of off-topic, but will Nya continue to go by the name Samurai X after the identity is revealed, or will the name become "Samurai Nya"?)

Heroica RPG - Quest #17: The Lion's Share
Flipz replied to Brickdoctor's topic in The Heroica Archive
Arthur thinks for a moment. "I think we're here so we aren't alone. I don't believe that the gods control our destiny any more than one person can control their own fate. Rather, it's by the connections we make that we change the future." He pauses, trying to choose his next words carefully. "I don't think we can make a difference, Althior, at least not the way most people think of it. In the ultimate scheme of things, we're just tiny cogs in a great machine. We can't change the world...but we can change each other. If I can bring even a little joy to just one person's life, then I face death gladly; that's all the difference I need to make." He turns his head toward Althior. "I envy you, you know. I see what you have with Alexis. That's more than a little joy you've brought to her, my friend, it's a veritable flood. And if it's the darkness you're concerned about..." he glances at Althior's hand. "Dark and Light are opposites. Dark and Good are not. Dark is not evil, and light is not good. Look at the Hinckwells. Almost everyone in Heroica sees them as light, good, heroic, even saint-like. To some, the Hinckwells can do no wrong. And yet, even more than the Shadeaux or even the Brobric, they are responsible for this war. Their greed and secrecy allowed evil to flourish. I doubt even the god of wealth everyone on this island seems to worship would see that as right. And look at Heroica's rogues, like De'kra and Atramor. Their profession is as dark as can be, and yet they are among Heroica's most honorable Heroes, truly living up to that name." Silence spread across that part of the fort like a mist. Both Mages heard the shouts of others below as the Lion Knights and the other Heroes prepared for the next battle. After some time, Arthur again turns to Althior. "I wish that none of this had happened. That none of this warfare were needed. That the Lion Knights could be spending their strength growing food for the hungry rather than gearing up for war. That Heroica were unnecessary, that the people of Eubric had the courage and honor to deal with their problems on their own. I bet you wish that Mark had never appeared on your hand, but that is not for us to decide. All we can do is decide what to do with the time that is given us. Don't lose hope, Althior. Even though Heroes like us can't do much on our own, one raindrop raises the sea. Few realize this within their entire lifetime. Even Heroes die, not knowing how much they've given to those around them. You've given far more than you realize, Althior. Take solace in that." Arthur returns his gaze to the horizon, thinking in silence once more. -

As William tried to follow Althior, Arthur raised an ice wall in his path. "Unh-uh. Unless our Knight teaches you people his Diplomacy, this is a problem for us Mages." He followed Althior back up to the tower, conjured up an ice boulder, and sat in complete silence. He made no secret of the fact he was there, but neither did he indicate he was trying to pry, or even that he wanted to talk at all. He simply sat, staring across the horizon, along with his mentor. -
Tanma, I would LOVE it if De'kra randomly wrote stuff like that in the magic book... EDIT: Agreed! That's something I've been trying to figure out for my own Star Trek RPG, as some of my current players aren't really fans of fighting, so I need a way to integrate good roleplaying into the "stat" system. I think I have something good set up, but I'll have to see how it goes.
-
Yeah. I'm trying to balance my Quest stuff in preparation for my Quest pitch to Sandy, and it seems to be seeping over into my character (i.e. explaining exactly how inferior this Slice N Dice is to the real deal instead of trying to use it to its fullest, most epic extent. )
-
When I first chose Mage, that was my intention, but now I think I'll just go for utility gems (Opal, Topaz, Amethyst, maybe Diamond) and then use Scrolls.
-
I swear I think of the Bowser Baddies in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga every time I hear read that phrase.
-
Why do I feel bad for trying to make all these crazy siege weapons? Is it a bad thing to try to be OP when you know the enemy will do the same? Question for everyone, but mostly QMs: when you're playing a Quest (instead of hosting one), do you tend to try and keep your character "balanced", or will you try to snag every opportunity to make your hero stronger (within Role-Play reason, of course) like any other player?

Heroica RPG - Quest #17: The Lion's Share
Flipz replied to Brickdoctor's topic in The Heroica Archive
OOC: I was gonna save this to use against Heroes in the future Quests I plan to host, but since we're in need and we actually have the materials for a VERY nerfed version... Arthur stares tiredly into the distance. Suddenly, he becomes highly animated, and runs back downstairs. He finds a felled tree (I think we cut down a few earlier...) and cuts a wide slice off the trunk (i.e. this part in brown). He then cuts off a second slice, but makes this one thinner and pares it down so it's only a fraction of the size of the big "wheel". He cuts a groove in this smaller piece and nails it to the center of the top of the big "wheel". He cores a small hole in the center of the wheel assembly and attaches it to an axle (stake), using pins through the stake to keep it in place even when it rotates. He fashions a base out of planks, with places for stakes to secure it to the ground. Next, he cuts four small pieces of rope and firmly attaches them to the outside of the "wheel" (note: these put into the pin holes of the wheel with a 1x1 plate on the end folloed by 1 or two of these is the best LEGO solution I can come up with). Finally, he looks for four old, unused, or even broken swords; if he can't find them, he instead sharpens the edges of planks to substitute. He prepares a similar assembly but only half the height, without the swords, and with the other half of the "axle" attached to the outside of the wheel as a handle. "There! Once we decide where to put it, we use this rope I've reserved and tied into a loop to act as a belt between the crank and the device. A fella I met in Eternia--I think that was the name of the place--showed me one of these once. It's called a Slice and Dice--its WP is very low to start with, since the blades are spinning slowly, but after a few rounds of continuous use, it'll get pretty powerful! A well-constructed (OOC: read: sold for a high price/used by enemy NPCs) one would actually be Hastened after a few rounds of continuous use, but I highly doubt my feeble imitation will do that well. Oh, there's some other safety information, let me PM the QM to see if he thinks it needs more limitations or if it's OK as-is find that parchment the Squire wrote that on..." "Oh, and another thing: this crank business is non-standard, so that's another reason it'd be weak; a properly-constructed one of these is usually made of stone and metal, is a lot tougher and more dangerous, and runs off its own power supply, likely some magical or alchemical fuel--the Squire refused to tell me the full details since I'm not a Knight." OOC: Yeah, if I'm going to try to improvise one, I might as well give more information out so QMs can use it to massacre Heroes in their Quests. -
