Lord of the Rings Ongoing Discussion

That Scouring of the Shire idea is great. I don’t think WB even has the rights to the Children of Hurin though. Rivendell might be my favourite Lego set to have ever existed, so yeah, that’s that. The only thing that could beat it out is the potential UCS Jabba’s Sail Barge that might be coming down the line. -

I’d gladly spend $650 on a Sail Barge. (Well, not gladly, but I’d want it more than I’ve wanted any other Lego set ever.) And it’s a ridiculous argument that Lego wouldn’t make a $650 Sail Barge, because they already made a $600 Razor Crest, which is a ship that appeared in 14 episodes of a show and is significantly less iconic than the Sail Barge. It’s also just a less appealing build with less minifigs. Also if Lego is going to do a UCS Sail Barge, it would be really annoying for it to not be minifig scale. The Barge is 5 metres longer than the Razor Crest and 4.5 metres shorter than the Millennium Falcon. So they’d need to make it a really large minifig-scale set, or else there’s no point in making it larger than a $200 playset. For clarity, I’d absolutely love a large MBS Endor set, but Jabba’s Sail Barge definitely shouldn’t be any smaller than a $600 set if/when it’s released. -

Well I think this probably means we’re getting a full-time return for LOTR at some point in the near future. Since if they’ll bring back sets from old Indiana Jones movies to go along with a single final movie, they’d definitely be able to sell a bunch of LOTR sets to go with movies coming down the line. But yeah, since the movies are still a ways away, the theme might not hit full stride for another 3-4 years or more. -

I guess since it’s based on A New Hope we’re less likely to get an unnamed pilot, since Lego has created plenty of unnamed rebel/resistance pilots, but all of the X-Wing pilots have had names so far. (Or at least clearly been a specific character if not named on the box.) -

A Lego Evaan Verlaine would be amazing, although I’m not holding my breath. It’ll probably just be 2 generic pilots. -

Sounds like the Swamp Speeder is basically a battle pack. But Lego might avoid naming it a battle pack if it includes named characters, since some weirdos got all up in arms about the Jedi and Clone Troopers Battle Pack and the Bounty Hunters Battle Pack a few years ago. The Cantina in fall of 2020. Although since then the Razor Crest and AT-AT essentially function as MBS sets, since they’re both very large sets at roughly minifig scale. I definitely agree that the Jedi Temple needs to be MBS, since having the full exterior shape is a lot more important than the Massassi Temple or Petranaki Arena. Plus there’s a lot more going on inside it. -

It’s not boycotting, it’s just not paying money for something I don’t want. Plus it’s not like clones are close to my favourite part of Star Wars, so there’s a decent chance I wouldn’t be buying the sets in the first place anyways. -

I feel like we’re getting way off topic here. If it’s gonna be like this, I might just leave the forum and wait until 10 months from now when we’re closer to when Barad-Dûr might release. Since we’re almost certainly not getting anymore LOTR sets this year. -

I’m talking about the printing being all stylized to make it seem like it’s animated with those weird grey cheeks. No other Lego Star Wars figures have those weird concave chest curves, and it makes the clones look completely out of place. I don’t completely hate the new helmet mould with holes, but it’s just laziness from Lego, and contributes to the clone figures looking bad. (Cody with his comically oversized visor, rangefinders being at wonky angles and locations) In trying to make a helmet mould that worked for both Cody and regular P2 clone troopers, they made one that worked well for neither. And like yeah, the clones do look like they’re trying to be clones, but Lego doesn’t deserve a pat on the back for the figures having a passable resemblance to the characters they’re attempting to portray. If you like the clone design I love that for you, it’s just not something that I can personally stand, and certainly not something I’d personally want to spend money on. -

I’d assume Luke would be in his yellow celebration outfit. And if it shows the celebration scene and has 12 minifigs, my guess would be the big 6 and something like 2 fleet troopers, Dodonna, a pilot, and a technician. -

Yoda’s Interceptor is a really weird set to remake, although I’m not complaining, since I missed out on the original. Although if it included a third figure, a Force Priestess, Dark Side Yoda, Darth Bane, or Rig Nema, that would make this set well worth the remake. -

I’m back after being away for the weekend, and wow that was a lot to read through. The Young Jedi Adventures set is cool, nice to be getting some unique minifigs. The build probably won’t be great, but I’ll probably try to pick it up on clearance when it inevitably ends up there. Yavin 4 is nice and overdue. The amount of minifigs is crazy. This might end up being something I want to get if the build looks good and the figs are somewhat interesting. The Swamp Speeder is likely a pass unless it includes a Jedi I really want, since I’m trying to avoid paying money for Lego’s awful current clone design. Microfighter, Mechs, and Chewbacca are meh. Not for me. I’m interested to see how the Chewbacca set ends up looking like though. And if one of the sets ends up being the Home One, that’s an instant buy for me. Still don’t have an Ackbar figure and he’s one of my favourite characters. -

Judging by the ridiculous amount of racism and misogyny the show was met with before it even released, I’d be extremely surprised if ROP wasn’t review bombed. -

I don’t think the issue about getting Lego sets based on the Rings of Power is how good the show is perceived to be. The issue is that Amazon seems like they don’t really care to make any merchandise for the show, nor do they care about marketing to children. Which doesn’t make Lego sets very likely, unless Lego goes out of their way to try to get this done. But due to the fact that it’s a TV show on a streaming service that isn’t the most prominent, it would be much easier for Lego to make sets based on the Peter Jackson movies. Since kids know about them and there aren’t any barriers to merchandising. You could probably do a moulded head, but the Balrog is too big to be a big fig. Plus the surroundings are pretty lacklustre, so you wouldn’t get a Balrog unless it is the main build of the set. -

I’m assuming it’s just in reference to the Eye of Sauron appearing in the scene when Gimli tries to destroy the ring, just like in the 2013 Council of Elrond set. -

Seripas and Durge are the perfect characters for this style. (They’re also ridiculously niche and Lego would never make them) But in all honesty, if these do exist I’m sure they’ll be bad sets with common minifigs. But hey, at least they likely wouldn’t have exclusive/desirable figs, so most people won’t have to or want to buy them. -

I think my issue with the skirt piece is that their outfits don’t drag on the ground at all. Maybe they could do printed bricks for legs like they did for dresses in that one Harry Potter advent calendar, but that just seems like it’d be weird to me. Plus their dark red arms are hidden for the most part, and a poncho would do well to hide them a bit more and complete the look. -

We’d probably have to get pretty deep in the theme before Lego started considering something like that. And pretty much the only thing not from the movies that’s really a possibility would be Tom Bombadil. But again, extremely unlikely. Although if we were getting any other solely book characters, I’d love to see a Saruman of Many Colours. -

The dress piece definitely fits better, since he doesn’t have pant legs on the outside of his outfit. It’s just that up until this point it’s been more important to have him be able to sit down in sets than use a dress piece. I feel like Palpatine with a cape is one of those weird Lego things we’ve all gotten used to that actually doesn’t make sense when you think hard and compare it to the source material, like Obi-Wan being a redhead. And it would be weird to see it change for the first time, but I’m sure we’d all get used to it after a bit, like the new Vader helmet mould. For the Royal Guards I feel like a fabric poncho would work better than a cape, since they’re another one of those characters that has a cape that doesn’t really make sense. -

I’m glad there’s no GWP, then I don’t feel bad about not buying the set right away. Better to wait until I have some more disposable income and double VIP points. Rarity doesn’t matter unless you’re planning on selling the thing you’re talking about. If it’s something you actually want to collect and hold onto, I’d rather everything be less rare, so then more people who also like said thing can get it more easily, and the market value is lower. It’s stupid to gatekeep people deriving joy from a collectible because you want to feel superior for owning a rare version. -

I mean there’s ups and downs. The building techniques are getting better on average and arm printing is becoming more common, but at the same time they also have put out a lot of the atrocious new clone design and have opted for cheaping out or being careless when it comes to some easy choices for sets. I hope we get a new montral piece as well, although knowing Lego I really doubt we do. I’m cautiously optimistic for the summer wave & potential Ahsoka sets. (Even if I have mixed feelings about the show itself) Although honestly I wouldn’t be too upset for an uninteresting summer wave, since my wallet really needs a break. -

I mean maybe if Rivendell sells really well, plus other sets, I can definitely see it. The issue is since Lego is hesitant enough to make LOTR sets, they’d be more hesitant about making a Hobbit set. So IDK, it’s up to you. -

I’m talking long term. Obviously it takes time for things to change, and we’re only 3 years since stuff hit the fan, so you’re not gonna get massive changes in demographics right away. It’s hard for people to give up on something that was such a big part of their life. But the overall trajectory of HP definitely seems to be more of a downward facing parabola, since the former expected growth has a huge damper on it now. But yeah, we should probably just keep this discussion off the LOTR forum, since it’s off topic from the point of the forum. -

I mean Harry Potter has the issue of being tied to bigotry, so its fandom is definitely not going to be continually growing, with a bunch of people who used to like it actively avoiding it. (And making sure their kids do the same) I’m definitely not saying they’re on the same playing field now, especially with younger people, but LOTR definitely has a much brighter long-term future than Harry Potter does. But that doesn’t have any effect on the short term popularity of Lego sets. On the topic of the arguments about how fewer kids are into LOTR, my question is, how many AFOLs don’t like playsets? Because the vast majority of us like Lego for the minifigures and love the playsets, since that’s what we grew up on and got us into Lego in the first place. Even if most of the people interested in sets are adults, I’m sure most of us would be very happy with playsets and they’d sell well anyways.
