  1. Thanks for featuring! I'll finish the lower hull instructions this week.
  2. Yeah, I tried to keep a lot of carryover with 21322 Barracuda Bay so that you have most of the parts already!
  3. Cheers! I see 2 plausible scenarios to explain her being in Pirate hands: 1. An imperial post ship/brig was attacked by the pirates and in the captain's chest was a set of blueprints from the admiralty detailing a new type of frigate design. They used the plans, adding their own improvements by way of a local defected naval architect (now the ship's carpenter/naturalist/lieutenant). They constructed her themselves at the Barracuda Bay dockyard, her materials purchased via Redbeard's expansive treasure stores from 30+ years of raiding. 2. She was an imperial ship that was hunting the pirates. They lured it into shallow waters unknown to the foreign captain and crew. She either beached or otherwise became a victim of tide and wind and was stuck overnight. Faced with a decision to be stuck indefinitely or seek reinforcements, they set a long boat out to the nearest outpost. Meanwhile the pirates returned to her under cover of darkness with as many men as would fit in their ships and took their prize off the skeleton crew, cutting her out before the empire returned.
  4. @Sebeus I I keep coming in to drool over the rigging! What is the longevity like on these types of shrouds for instance? I know it would be possible to adjust the standing rigging to remain taut with age, but do the shrouds ever have issues eventually deforming or getting saggy with age?
  5. I would never be so cruel on my own! @Mister Phes put me up to it For the lower hull? A "backbone" of sorts with modified bricks to mount the hull sides which are built SNOT, then brackets in that construction to allow the 2 sides to get tied together via 2x8 plates up top in the recesses of the prefab hull pieces.
  6. I've wanted to do these for a while and I finally made the time. Had to finish this week for @Mister Phes or he would ban me.
  7. Indeed, she will be ready. Thank you! Thank you so much, I feel least confident in my story/characters so I appreciate this, I will keep on going! My “seamless” at the moment is 2 pieces of white foam core on my table up against a white wall, 2 lamps plus ceiling lighting and a professional designer’s worth of photoshop to remove the seams and blemishes. A bit arduous, but it works. I wish I had the space to dedicate for a little corner of the studio but Covid has condensed both mine and my gf’s (also a designer) work in the home studio and I can’t find the space for a permanent setup. The trick is to use one lamp as primary light source the second lamp as a fill against the wall (I have one with exposed soft white bulbs) so you don’t have a dark shadow between base and wall opposite your primary light. Thank youuuuu. I agree but wanted her to feel like a kit in-theme so I’m stuck living with these molded ladder shrouds. I think what I’ll ultimately do (or never be happy) is a “UCS” version of Fer Maiden that’s a slightly larger scale with a bit more detail and some custom rigging and accurate mast stepping, etc. edit: ah thanks re: stern. I love the British frigate standard of arched outboard stern windows. Especially on a French hull design (a la Endymion, nee Pomone).
  8. Cheers! I have a few updates below: First, a new lower hull with shallower draught. This change ended up being a little difficult but nothing a few late nights couldn't figure out. In the end I think this subtle difference works better proportionally as a full model. Let's have a closer look at her (not yet completed) crew: The Quarterdeck: the Captain on the helm - where he likes to be, the ship's cat, the Lieutenant/Carpenter/Naturalist (a pirate crew isn't as segregated as the stuffy Admiral's Navy after all), the Lady at Arms (a ruthless killer), and the Quartermaster/singer/newfangled Spanish "guitarra"/chordophone player. The Waist and Foc'sle: here we have the Gunnery Sergeant/Cook disciplining one of his Waisters/Gunners for missing training. The Forecastle Men look on with amusement, as the Sergeant's wooden leg makes for an entertaining chase. They share memories of the battle in which he lost his leg aboard the Black Seas Barracuda as a part of Redbeard's crew. And finally we have a shot of the Captain and his Lieutenant plotting their course in the great cabin. These are still just the sea trials, so where could they be headed? Here she is in the water running on a broad reach. Note: the Top Men aloft, a tight-knit bunch of able seamen who pride themselves most on their efficiency in maneuvering - a bond they have forged with the Captain and misc. deck crews over previous erm... endeavors. Part of any high performance machine is maintenance and upkeep. Under sea trials it was found that a few pieces of her copper had come loose and really needed re-caulking. Due to other projects' keels already being laid at Barracuda Shipyard, they careened in a nearby shoal bay for repairs. Unfortunately she was already trimmed and laden with guns so the crew decided to take the full effort to unload and make camp for a few days. Here she is getting scrubbed and prepped for repair. I'm thinking about how best to update Rebrickable with the lower hull. Do I add it to the main model as another update or just offer it as an independent (free) MOC? Your guys' feedback is appreciated as always. For what it's worth there are a few changes to smooth some stuff out at the bow but I'm missing those bricks and instead of waiting even longer for some Bricklinks to arrive I decided to use what I had on-hand.
  9. Instantly I thought to myself how nice the subtle colorway of reddish brown gun stripe on dark brown hull looks mixed with all the grey... a nice nod to the "everyman" pirates. A hold full of glistening gold is a nice touch as well haha! Is that bounty to be divided purely between the crew or was there an... investor for this raid? As someone who has come around more recently in the MOC realm, I've intentionally tried to stay away from your style of ship and hull solutions purely as a point of difference. However, I wanted to tell you how wonderful and complete your designs are, especially your standing and running rigging and sail accuracy. Perhaps our various ships' paths will cross one day.
  10. Special thanks to @cehnot for letting me (digitally) abuse such a beautiful ship. I was playing around with some gunfire techniques. "With the devil's vessel off our larboard quarter we readied our gundeck battery and braced for engagement... then with swift manoeuvre, the pirate frigate quickly yawed, beating towards windward, crossing our wake and violently raking our stern. Amongst the mayhem below deck, the crews had not yet run the stbd cannon out and thus we had no reasonable course but to strike our colors and accept our fate..." The Capture of the Galleon Camilla by the Frigate Fer Maiden.
  11. I love it! But you know that already. I hope you don't mind that I painted her below the waterline for this, artistic license and all... 12. I'll make the final hull changes this week so it can finally be "done" for posting. Finally. Maybe. Yes. I dunno.
  13. I think you're right... I've messed around tonight and I think I can modify it to remove 1 brick's worth of height whilst still retaining some accurate shaping. I never noticed that my original version I blocked in grew during shaping refinement and I never went back to my original height that was referenced from plans.
  14. She’s ready to hunt some 7 Seas East Indiamen/Galleons ...
  15. I love the story! Race built galleon for long hauls certainly blurs the line with East Indiamen and one could argue that a fleet of these quicker more seaworthy transports could have been a more effective treasure armada for Spain, historically speaking. In the same vein, my world adjusts the timeline of the Golden Age of Piracy to include later naval designs (some forward-thinking shipwrights, haha) or adjust the centuries/decades a bit so piracy as a “faction” spans the whole Age of Fighting Sail. With regards to colorways, are you proposing that the black/white/gold BSB/7SB livery is for the Armada instead of a paint job specific to Red Beard? We should iron it out, because if I make some Imperial coastal defense ships for instance, maybe they uh, align with the direction we choose. Re: armament I think you have her very well gunned for a merchant/race galleon. If you removed stores space and crew size perhaps you could have a larger armament but then at that point you should razee her upper works to let her eat more wind. What I’m saying is that I think she’s perfect for your story. Re: rigging, I think a lateen on the mizzen is key for your Mediterranean Spanish-style architecture. If you wanted to, you could update the prow and beakhead to a Dutch style design (became ubiquitous in the 18th c.) and then a gaff spanker and t’gallant on the mizzen would fit well. I also think your plan for the fore and main are great: course, tops’l and t’gallant. 3 sail stacks are great at this scale. Stepping more masts and adding more sky sails gets a little extreme for the limited “legal” Lego shrouds etc. Exciting project, can’t wait to see her built!
  16. This is absolutely killer! The crew of the Fer Maiden have heard whispers in the wind of her riches and word is they have set sail to find her in open waters, hopefully without escort. I definitely feel like our ships can live in the same universe. Wonderful take on the full hull, really gives it that Galleon shape - nice and fat under the waterline. She won't do 14 kts but she can sure haul a ton of precious cargo. One thing I struggled with the Fer Maiden is interior space in a frigate more or less being dominated by the gun deck and missing out on space for all these amazing details like an armory and crew accommodations; the way you've detailed this out is terrific.
  17. Cheers, I appreciate that. I built the lower hull in bricks recently. Finally got around to some pics. Really happy with how it turned out! She also got a crew! Well, at least the start of a crew.
  18. Thanks for the comments, really gave me some motivation to work on my brig and sloop designs whilst waiting for Bricklink deliveries.
  19. Haha for real! It’s not the ship’s/design’s fault though! Sané was a master. It was actually ahead of British designs (as were most French vessels) but errr, between artillery practices of aiming at rigging foremost and cutting the heads off or disbanding most of your admiralty, I’m surprised the French navy (MNF) lasted as long as it did. And then eventually Napoleon completely misused or even abused his naval strategy that further reflects poorly once history is written. The Royal Navy liked the ship though! Hahaha. They took quite a few as prizes and even built new RN “classes” based on her lines (named after the prize ships the had captured). Most famously they captured Duguay Trouin like 2 weeks after Trafalgar and she became HMS Implacable - whose stern is on display at the National Maritime Museum. Unfortunately she was scuttled in 1949 - what a waste! Such a shame, a surviving 74-gun would be a wonderful thing to see in the 21st century.
  20. 74 gun 3rd rate! Since you’re adept at historical research and accuracy - I think French Temeraire class ships are the perfect balance for ships of the line and their proliferation in 18th century navies (mainly French and English) yielded something like 120 ships constructed to this specific design, let alone the various other 74 gun designs. IMO 74s proved that 1st and 2nd rates eventually existed purely as flagships and chest-beating not as efficient weapons. Further evidence being the age of HMS Victory even by the time of Trafalgar - it obviously was neither economic nor effective to build 1st rates over 3rd rates. Now, Pirates getting their hands on a 3rd rate - that’s something I’d like to see!
  21. That works, Eddie! The colorway and pharaoh headdress (neme?) are an ode to the Powerslave album artwork. Eddie is a pharaoh/Sphinx. Personally it’s a toss up between Number of the Beast and Powerslave album for me as their all time best. Yes! I’ll have the hull bottom finished by then as well. So I could potentially create quite a few scenes for you. Plus I’ve got these island and dock pieces burning a hole in their containers to help portray various vintage feeling “box art” shots.
  22. Cheers for the warm welcome, guys! It's nice to get detailed and converse on the forums, finally. I made some interior/cabin renderings for our collective viewing pleasure. Minifigs coming! I have been trying to sort out a final crew, not sure what's taken so long (busy) I should order some more parts now before I forget. Bonus points if you can name the reference between figurehead and the ship's name.
  23. Working on the modular lower hull for Fer Maiden. Hoping to have it completed over the weekend but, such is life building MOCs in reality vs Stud.io, I of course had to make revisions that required further brink link orders (and damned waiting....) So far so good for the overall structure, but obviously the SNOT sloped sides being sturdy enough to handle will be key.
