  1. I love it! Such a well done design especially the stern. More pics!
  2. Agreed about the small nitpick - either remove the offending upper gold flourish or scrap the aftermost gun port and bring some black forward to “blend” the gallery in with the sides. She’s a beautiful build, really well done. Love to see the various frigates, especially since real life had so many different designs as well.
  3. This hopefully ticks the boxes for playability as well as build style for you/your kids’ fleet! I know we spoke about Fer Maiden’s gun deck height (4 bricks) but L’Anubis is a slightly less comfortable work environment for the average seaman in a gun crew. Such is the life of a line ship though. Thank you Vane! I appreciate that a lot. Let’s hope she retains it as I start building out the finer details of the hull construction.
  4. Both be causing headaches sure as day, with the Barracuda recently disrupting a stores resupply to an Imperial Outpost. But the survivors’ tales of a lightning fast frigate of unknown origin - described as wearing her lines suspiciously similar to the most recent Société de la Marine Impériale blueprints - is something that has sent rumbles up the Admiralty. Diverting a line ship for anti-piracy duties is one thing. Locating and intercepting “le fantôme rapide” that be at the heart of this, however, is another challenge altogether.
  5. Hahaha, cheers dude! It’s going to be a wild to see her with the full hull, I’m not sure if I have room for her in the house yet lol. Ah yes, the Egyptian mythology is my little nod to the Battle of the Nile - plus, all the Greek mythological names were already taken during the Age of Sail! (Haha). How cool is that Anubis headgear from Lego!? The printing on the pharaoh/mummy sets is fantastic.
  6. I made some progress last night and updated the images in the first post. Only visual difference is the upper gun stripe is moved up 1 plate to accommodate some torsional stiffness midship because I added her waist steps. Also added nets at the waist opening along the spar deck. Here's a shot of how I'm blocking out her interior so far. I haven't added any hatches yet - I will most likely concentrate on the structure a bit more. The lower gun decks are quite cramped for the crew - such is life in Broadside's Navy.
  7. Haha, indeed. It seems the disruption to the Bluecoat merchants has lead to the admiralty sending over a display of force, lead by their brand new ship class.
  8. Here’s a love letter to one of my favorite ships of the Age: the absolutely terrific Téméraire-class 3rd rates by Jacques Noël-Sané. Without doubt this is my main inspiration for L’Anubis - god of the Underworld. The main obstacle for building larger ships in theme-scale is obviously the age old question: to prefab hull or not? Building the lower hull to Fer Maiden that mates up w/ the prefabs taught me a few ways to do a brickbuilt hull that can at least live in the same universe as them. That gave me the confidence to try this. I then used Fer Maiden’s dimensions to get a theme-scale equation and have my 3rd rate at 70x18 studs along her gun deck. Total width at her waterline is slightly more due to the SNOT curved slopes. Anyway, enough of that - I know you want the goods. This is still very much a work in progress with some gaps and test techniques so bear with me! I feel like you guys enjoy seeing a bit more of the process. This project has been progressing super quickly thus far (surprisingly) but I will really need to build her in real life and the instructions are going to take a massive effort.
  9. Yeah, that's why I think building the sheer with a rise/run method of the plate works best. Whilst it does initially seem too "blocky" in a 2D side view, when it's combined with tumblehome slope and hull plan view tapering it at least gets removed from the "unorthodox" building techniques that are quite weak like you said, for the hull of a ship (especially this size). These are the plans I've referenced for Diana: https://prints.rmg.co.uk/products/ship-plan-of-hms-diana-1794-lines-j5535 I've overlaid them with some lines in Adobe Illustrator and color coded them for discussion: - Pink outlines the gunports and 2 rails that define the gunport stripe (ochre/yellow/tan) - Light Pink is the gun deck - it does not have as much shear as the hull, as you said. - Green is horizontal lines to use as reference (note: especially the one intersecting the bottom of windows and top of waist gunports) - Blue is water line (horizontal) that denotes her coppering as well Here's some additional reference after reading my post: https://modelshipworld.com/gallery/album/2040-completed-model-of-hms-diana-by-jotika/
  10. I see... so it was not an illusion but actual hogging (technically, haha) - always a sign that she's in need of a refit or repair! jk I love the detail you're capturing at this scale. The double capstan is done beautifully, as-is the beakhead. I revise my unsolicited advice: maybe something like 1/10 or 1/12 for the rise/run. I noticed this is basically 2x the size of my Fer Maiden (built at theme scale) and I am using 1/6. Diana also seems to have some decent shear at the bow as well (looking at her plans). I'd at least consider adding 1-2 plates of rise at the bow and 3-4 plates at the stern especially. Again, looking at Diana's plans, the bottom of her quarter gallery windows is in line with the top of her waist gunports, so it's definitely there! Looking forward to the progress, this is a massive project.
  11. Agreed, but at your scale adding a plate or 2 of shear especially at the stern would help (in my opinion). Right now I do think it looks a little hogged (human eyes don't like straight lines). I'd look at maybe adding something like 1/6 rise/run ... anyway - again sorry for the unsolicited opinions.
  12. Thanks! The Fer Maiden would lay absolute waste to a sloop of this size hehe. LOL yeah we will have to save something for April Fool's 2022 haha. Cheers! I wanted the deck to be 1 plate higher but it would make building later versions more difficult so I left it as-is. In the vein of something like a Cruizer-class (over 100+ built) brig, there would be various alterations to suit it's intended function. Right now it's flush-deck tip to tail like HMS Mars. Perhaps a version meant for longer distances would trade some stern guns for enclosed captain's quarters. If built for trading it may resemble more of an HMS Ontario type of vessel with full quarter decks. HMS Mars: HMS Ontario:
  13. Great trick with the way you made the spanker! Looks very appropriate for a contemporary kit w/ BSB, SES, CC, etc... Awesome man,
  14. Awesome, can't wait to see this completed.
  15. Haha, Redbeard must surely be "Commodore" by now with how many Barracudas he has. Cheers! It's definitely nice to have options for both play and display.
  16. So much nostalgia with this build! Really awesome - nice mix of vintage and modern building techniques. Repurposed torso is a fun detail too!
  17. Word in the wind is that Captain Redbeard has scaled back his plundering to focus on life at Barracuda Bay... yet here be a newly commissioned coastal vessel for defense and raiding. She's an 18-gun flush-deck brig-sloop carrying 14 large carronades on broadside, 2 stern carronades and 2 long gun bow chasers. She's built to Theme-scale with fast lines and shallow draft, making her an ideal raider. Befitting her namesake, she uses speed and agility to trap prey close to shore and then slips away between reef and shoal, her holds full of provisions or treasure. Her sails are shared with my Fer Maiden design (except she's brig-rigged not a ship-rig so she does not have a mizzenmast). Features: a working capstan to weigh anchor, standing and running rigging with yards that rotate to accurately portray various sailing profiles, removable grates in the hatches for loading cargo or crew* *There is minimal height below deck due to the prefab hull so she does not have a modeled crew quarters. Now go find some prey, me fellow scoundrels, and lay waste to anyone who tries to stop you. I've been working on this one for what feels like AGES. I couldn't decide on what type of brig to build. I first wanted to do an Imperial brig but in the end I thought I'd give Redbeard a reinterpreted BSB flush-deck brig sloop armed to the absolute teeth. I figure this suits his lifestyle at Barracuda Bay - needing something that can sail quickly into shallow waters with a decent hold size. As for techniques this is very much in line with my design for the Fer Maiden frigate, just scaled for a brig. A workhorse sloop of war, devoid of the fanciful carvings and figureheads but still customized and special enough for a veteran sea dog like Redbeard. In these local waters around the Bay, he traded lush quarters and privacy for more guns and a life with the crew below deck. Originally I had a few versions with aft quarter galleries, cabins, etc. and like any good brig-sloop class, there will be different versions built. Find the instructions and .io model on Rebrickable here: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-76499/supersick_/barracuda-brig/#details
  18. Love this! One of my favorite historical ships are the French Temeraire-class 74’s. Also it’s huge! So fkn cool!
  19. Generally, yes. There are a few areas where they would have to duck to avoid a beam or two but gun crews with bandanas or sailors with Tricorns can stand upright. Captains with bigger hats/hair/etc fit standing upright aft, in the great cabin (I’ve kept the tiled floor as low as possible). edit: the height of gun deck floor to ceiling is 4 bricks at maximum with -1 plate reduction in certain areas for extra structure and support for the removable weather decks.
  20. Awesome. And great video too, super impressive stop-motion! Not that you asked, but I really want to extend the upper deck forward to the same length as the lower, and build a bigger prow for the beakhead (shift it all forward a bit if that makes sense). Anyway, just my personal preference - great ship, love seeing something like this in theme-scale.
  21. This is SO cool, do you have any plans for other Pirate theme MOCs?
  22. Thank you guys for the feedback and compliments, I really appreciate it. I've completed the lower hull and listed it as a new MOC on Rebrickable (it's free). https://rebrickable.com/users/supersick_/mocs/
  23. Redbeard has decided that command of a full size frigate is for young captains seeking the utmost adventure and has taken to a smaller core crew and a freshly commissioned 16 gun brig. There are 2 carronades between the aft gallery/lockers. One has a bed and the other will be a small office (or another bed can be set in there). Barracuda Brig WIP: Still trying to work out the details, but I feel like it's getting there.
  24. This reminds me of the Legoland life-size master builds that the Lego catalogs would showcase when I was a kid. Bravo!
