First, thanks so much for the compliments, and I'm glad you're having fun with the builds! I really appreciate the support. I was just going to update this thread, you have rather good timing! Aye, there's something about the long term cruising ability, firepower and speed of the large frigates that makes them super exciting. Supernaut updates. I'm about to order my bricklink carts! (Mind the mess, there's still a few cheese wedge slopes missing I'm sure, and some wrong colors here and there) I redid the hullside section, figured out a method to connect the shroud lines to the masts so that there's add'l stability, and indicated the chains anchoring the shrouds to the hull in a way I'm happy with. I also redid the width of the main gun deck 1 stud wider through most of it for proportional accuracy (jumper plate mania to get the odd-stud width to work with an even-stud technic gear-driven capstan system). I also added stern davits, and completely redid the bow, a new brodie-style stove, and new 18pdr cannon and carronades ( @TimoFunk inspiration on the long guns). Comparison with Fer Maiden (~2000 bricks). Supernaut is over 5,300 bricks. 6,600+ with the lower hull.

Aye, indeed. I remember it fondly from before the movies as well haha.

[MOC] "Fer Maiden" - 36 Gun Privateer Frigate
Supersick_ replied to Supersick_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
Timo, I took your note about them being delicate and re-worked mine to use a core w/ 1x2 modified brick so they can be picked up as a unit and move position via jumpers built into the deck level. Screenshot attached. Different cones on the end of the barrel for different size guns. -
[MOC] "Fer Maiden" - 36 Gun Privateer Frigate
Supersick_ replied to Supersick_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
She looks great, and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say thanks for the inside look at those guns haha. I did a version that uses a minifig head at the rear of the barrel to help sell the idea of some extra taper. I'll post pics soon, I think using different size "cones" at the exit of them can maybe even differentiate between ~12pdr and 18pdrs. -
[WIP] “L’Anubis” - 3rd Rate Ship of the Line
Supersick_ replied to Supersick_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
Timo, I'll definitely build her in a way that you can add them haha! I'm leaving them off the upper deck because most reference I have seen for the Temeraire-class ships they are not there; only the lower deck ports have covers. -
[WIP] “L’Anubis” - 3rd Rate Ship of the Line
Supersick_ replied to Supersick_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
Update: I know most of you wish this was a completed L'Anubis, but I assure you we are very close. I took her down to the joists and redid her to a larger scale. I think this is the best for playability as well as accuracy. Rebuilding her with Supernaut's hull technique shouldn't take much time since most of her internals will carry-over... but instructions will probably push this out for a couple weeks. I realize more bricks gets expensive but I'm minimizing costs as much as I can with respect to color and brick choices (going off Bricklink costs). I may include a "color coded" model of L'Anubis so that you can see if you have/find cheaper internal structural components. Life/work balance has been a struggle for a few busy years and unfortunately my MOCs are affected by that. I appreciate all the interest and it really motivates me to finish her. -
Aye, this is a great use of Fer Maiden / Barracuda Brig base. She looks terrific, keep us up to date. I really enjoy her colors. All the updates are really cool - the new boats are much better and the stove looks amazing! You could add a few plates to the structure/underside of the lower hull so she's "fatter" in the midsection - as would be a whaler or merchant ship meant for cargo. Fer Maiden's lines are styled after a late 18th c. French frigate, much finer (and lacking stowage). Great work Third Nav!

[WIP] “L’Anubis” - 3rd Rate Ship of the Line
Supersick_ replied to Supersick_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
Check in: yes, she is definitely getting finished/updated and will have instructions. This year has just been busier than expected at work and I haven’t had the time to focus on Anubis as is needed. Apologies for the delays, I know a lot of you are patiently waiting for her to be launched. She’s coming, and I (albeit a little biased) think the update will be worth the wait. Cheers! -
[MOC] "Fer Maiden" - 36 Gun Privateer Frigate
Supersick_ replied to Supersick_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
This is awesome! She looks great with the recolored livery (more realistic too) and I really love those long guns! Have you finished her yet? Please post more pics when you do. Cheers! -
This is fantastic, Sebeus! I love the balance you achieved - it feels perfectly nostalgic/modern.

Anubis is coming along. I will have updates in her thread soon! Grazie mille! Cheers! I appreciate it. Aye, will do Captain!

Wow, I’m so excited to see realistic vessels from you. Keep it up! Also love the Lego rope shrouds - Very cool mate! Now… more!!!

I edited the first post with updated images and description of Supernaut - and hopefully did a good job explaining my homage to Endymion. I’m just about happy enough with the model to start the instructions. Id like to add some more interior details before showing that. As per usual, I’m making sure things work in the real world using available parts and colors (argh!). This just makes some things so tedious. Always compromising…..

Just launched for service on an especially black sabbath, the Frigate Supernaut... - Updated to a [MOC] She's built with an extensively SNOT side/hull that allows me more control of plan view taper and more proper L/W ratio. The hull is 18 wide at the bow, 20 wide at the waist, 16 wide at the stern. She’s built at “theme scale” like my other ships. I'd like to give a nod to @boeing_787_8_dreamliner ships that inspired these rigid axle shrouds and @Dread Pirate Wesley inspiration for the ship’s boats. I started this hull design for L’Anubis and eventually got too busy with work to finish. However, I recently dusted off an old save file I found labeled “Fer Maiden Heavy.” Clearly a few months ago I had a late night of experimenting I’d pretty much forgotten about. ‘Nay, stubborn fool, the people do not want this from you.’ I couldn’t help it, I felt the draw of a fast frigate! I made an excuse that in my “story world” of these ships, it would make more sense to introduce HMS Supernaut before L’Anubis. This is a thinly veiled delusion, as I really wanted to create my homage to HMS Endymion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Endymion_(1797)?wprov=sfti1 I’ll save you too long a history lesson from me and let you hit the wiki if you want, but - I gotta say that the wiki page is missing a lot of great context and detail that you can find in books like ‘Frigates of the Napoleonic Wars.’ One of the coolest details missing from Wiki is that Pomone, the French ship she took her lines from, was not an officially commissioned MNF vessel. She was privately designed and built, and brought in front of MNF Admiralty to be evaluated (and subsequently put to service) as a Naval vessel. The Frigate Supernaut shares some of the special things about her lines - very straight and shallow in shear and a very long running stern taper at waterline. Supernaut is launched and given orders to sail for the new world, investigate the threat posed by the pirate frigate Fer Maiden and engage or capture as necessary. Her hull form allows enough stores for year-long cruising but is fast enough to be a deadly hunter. Her length keeps her steady in seas and though she will heel under canvas, she is mild mannered in pitch and roll. Her upper works are devoid of superstructures as to not block wind and she’ll clock 14.5 knots. Her crew is not too cramped, her gun deck operates at peak efficiency. Her bulwarks and pretty flat quarterdeck provide ample space for her officers and weatherdeck gun crews in battle. She’s large and strong enough to carry a heavy main battery, and ballasted to sit with slight forward rake - allowing her surprising agility in battle. This also increased her freeboard at the waist guns to her stern. I’m rather happy with the recent evolution of her beakhead, and a typically menacing figurehead indicative of a Supersick_ built ship… … and stern gallery I chose to paint her in black with ochre stripe but alternate liveries can include a classic Nelson Chequer with yellow stripe and more decorative upperworks. Here’s a look at the bow section. I’m splitting the ship into bow/mid/stern sections to increase playability. This requires some sort of modular axle/gear-based capstan mechanism. I’m happy with my solution but I really need to build her first to make sure it works without issue. Note: for the scale of Supernaut I felt a custom main anchor was needed, and am now using the molded ones as kedge anchors. It took a few iterations to get right - being a slightly odd size. Still not perfect, so I may be adjusting them a bit - at least I got the scale and position I wanted tho. I suppressed some floor and structures to show the capstan mechanism. The barrel fwd of the stove helps hide the axle and technic plate necessary for this design. Compared to Fer Maiden below: A nice shot carrying her boats at the waist. I’ll end with a painting of her inspiration, Endymion, and Supernaut paying homage… Updates, interior views, physical model, sails (and more ships!!!), soon. Thanks for stopping by.

[WIP] HMS LIVELY 38 Gun Frigate (Step 3)
Supersick_ replied to boeing_787_8_dreamliner's topic in Pirate MOCs
Man, this is ridiculously cool. I've dreamt of doing this for so long but the task to undertake it seemed so daunting. Bravo! It reminds me of a really cool Antoine Roux painting of Marseilles, 1809: -
Likewise, I can’t wait to see the updates!
-
Awesome to see! Capt Xavier and I got in touch after he built a few Fer Maiden frigates for this display and I sent him the latest L'Anubis .io working file for their 3rd Rate designs. He also build a heavy frigate 44 based off the Maiden, as well as some brig sloops based off my Barracuda class brig. It's great to see L'Anubis prototype in real bricks; he's definitely pushed me to finish her and given some great feedback for the build. The display is beyond impressive. I'm hoping to contribute some more ships to the upcoming pirate additions.

Yeah, I can't believe how awesome the rigging looks in LEGO string. The patience to figure all that out... bravo! She's beautiful. -
[WIP] “L’Anubis” - 3rd Rate Ship of the Line
Supersick_ replied to Supersick_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
Aye, I've made progress on her. Work has been killer so I've been behind schedule... I'll be finishing soon. Hopefully she will launch in April, May at the latest. I'm really happy with the updates - the size has increased slightly to make things both stronger as well as play better. I think I will finish her as a waterline model first and then develop the full hull afterwards. Thanks for the motivation, it won't be long now... -

Yes, just going to be a plate here and a few studs there but requires some redoing of structures. -
[WIP] “L’Anubis” - 3rd Rate Ship of the Line
Supersick_ replied to Supersick_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
She's going, but very slowly. Work has been very busy and I just haven't had the energy to resolve all the things I'm trying to do yet. In short, I want to give her a bit more space so she's going to grow a bit in scale. Will have more time to dedicate after first week of Nov. I would like to complete her in time for the holidays (building season)! -
Aye, there's much wisdom in this post. The Main and Mizzen work in conjunction (more or less) to drive the rear of the ship. The Fore (and Jibs) drive the front. A ship who's mainmast is at it's center point would have a helluva time turning since the wind would keep pushing the center of mass... downwind. If I can offer another unsolicited suggestion: taper the hull towards the stern! The plan view of ships looked very "tear drop" like @kurigan said: the bluff/round bow, fat waist and then ... the taper! Keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing your new ships every time. Edit: more detail re: the taper - The gun stripe and quarter galleries are pretty accurate, it's the hull formed underneath them that is essential undercut on a post ship/frigate/corvette. A picture is probably more helpful:

[WIP] “L’Anubis” - 3rd Rate Ship of the Line
Supersick_ replied to Supersick_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
I’m reworking the design so the deck heights are a little easier for minifigs. Annoyingly this is taking a bit of effort but in the end the result will be worth it. -
Haha, thanks man! Yeah, designing cars pay the bills (I still love them), motos are the most fun (but at 37, also why I hurt in the morning). Lego is such a universal language - I know a lot of people rediscovering their love of the bricks lately. Thanks for the compliments on my ships, your Constitution is looking really great, she's HUGE!
