Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
RichardGoring replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I suspect that things like the sign and fleece blanket from the last month cost them far less to produce than a brick-built GWP. I suppose it depends whether you want to consider fixed cost vs additional cost. The time and effort required to design and test (plus manufacture) a brick-built GWP will be far more than getting a single graphic designers to give a design to a promotional gift manufacturer to churn out loads of signs, blankets, mugs etc. You get these as corporate gifts at conferences all the time and they cost virtually nothing. It's shocking really. It may be a hangover from lock down last year (if sets take a year or so to produce) where they decided to do things that are easier without the need for physical collaboration. Or it may be that they're trying to broaden appeal, or get the LEGO brand into other areas of people's lives. Or that it's just quicker and cheaper for them to produce. Either way, I hope it stops and doesn't expand, as GWPs can often be amazing sets. and it would be a shame to lose access to the team that develops them. -

It's fabulous. I hope that you're happy with the final execution. Well done on everything towards it. And I look forward to your alternate options too, if you have time. -

If it's anything like the December one, then it can take a long time to fill the days with blank spaces. Or, more usefully, they may be cutting it fine with what inventory they can get out to all locations, and so delaying publishing it. And/or they are light on staff over the holidays. -

In fun news, the fan designer of Sonic has said on Twitter they will post some alterations to allow you to expand it with two sets. Implied that this was part of the plan during development with LEGO. Although I don't know why they wouldn't make it post of the official instructions to do that. Either way, sounds promising. -

Why on earth would they do that? Surely it's just creating waste. In the beforetimes, I would travel a lot, and sometimes forget to leave my hotel keycard behind. It would go in the bin when I got back. Sometimes even at the airport. Oh well, at least I won't feel compelled to welcome in the New Year by sitting on the LEGO website waiting to order it to get a GWP, and I can wait for double VIP or a useful GWP later in the year. I hope LEGO stop these non-LEGO brick GWP soon. -

Agreed. Slight shame that some of the key elements, that you would actually play with are stickers, but it's not a deal breaker. This would be excellent. I was pondering earlier whether you could do a Chemical Zone level to follow on from Green Hill zone, but a second set with Tails would be awesome. I hope it sells well enough to justify it, but I can't see it happening. I very much wish I am wrong! -
Wizarding World 2022 - Rumors & Discussion

Lego generally builds toa price point. The advent calendar may be one of the few where they have a minimum piece number/volume as otherwise each day won't be sufficient. Whereas with other sets they can set the price and then budget a reduced piece count/volume to match. With supply chain issues and inflation as they are, it would surprise me if there were smaller sets for the price or more small pieces used to artificially inflate the price. It's not about being sneaky or mean spirited, it's just the economics of it. -

As much as I would love this to happen, I can't see Sonic being as popular as Minecraft. And it certainly doesn't have the legions of current fans that Minecraft does. Plus, Minecraft is made out of blocks, so it's a perfect complement. I really like the new Sonic set, but I think you'd struggle to make a lot more that have mass appeal and are fun to build. Having said all that, I hope I'm wrong. And I will be getting two to see what I can MOC from the second set to expand it. -

I think Diagon Alley is very playable. Many other D2Cs are too. Especially Creator Expert, LEGO Movie, Ninjago, Monkie Kid (do the big sets count as D2C?). MBS in Star Wars are also very playable. I think if the intent is there, the designers can pull it off. It's just whether that's what they are trying to do. I live in hope! -

Personally I'd love that. Incorporating the dragon belly into Gringotts. Maybe with a play feature, possibly something mechanical. And/or the vault mine cart tracks too. I'd hope they'd do it really well as both display and play pieces. And this would give a decent budget to achieve it. -
Wonderful!

Sonic looks fabulous. I grew up with Sonic 1 and 2 on the Mega Drive (Genesis in the US) and prefer it over the original submission. Although I can see why people might get upset. Looks lovely. Really elegant. And potential to create more. Will be interested to see if the play features do anything particularly clever or if it's supposed to be largely static. -

Oh wow! 32607 three leaf stud comes in coral! I missed that, it's awesome. Although also twice the price of the other colours as it's new, so I may wait a while before getting a load of them. I'd really love this piece to come in dark red, but coral is almost red enough to work for something natural to blend with the yellow and orange for autumn/fall colours. -

Agreed. You could do many cool and fun things with a $470 Newt's suitcase. But it surely wouldn't be iconic enough for them to actually do it. -

1:5 scale Anglia that fits the buildable figures of Harry and Ron in it. With the $100 set being UCS Dobby's sock that fits in the boot. And then the $20 set is a microscale Gringotts to fir the microscale DA GWP. -
Winter Village Sets - Rumours and Discussion
RichardGoring replied to Gearslover01's topic in LEGO Town
That's true for the Christmas GWP, but not for several other sets that have been cancelled in the last year or so. The City bomb factory hideout was shown in promotional images in the instructions of other sets, then cancelled. The Marvel mechs were announced, and then cancelled. The Osprey was delivered to some independent retailers and then cancelled. I appreciate the fail safes and think they're great to ensure product quality and protect brand image. But they should probably come earlier in the process. To be fair though, in the grand scheme of things, it's a minor PR blip. It's just magnified in places like this forum. 99% of LEGO fans don't know and don't care. -

I've just got the Creator Expert Tower Bridge and Big Ben sets (for only $300 total, which was excellent). After I've built the main models, I'd like to use them to build some kind of town hall type thing that incorporates the clock tower. There's one on Rebrickable, but it's very short. Has anyone seen any MOCs that do this, which might help with inspiration? -

The thing that makes most sense for a $470 D2C is either Gringotts with two layers incorporating a roller coaster setup or Gringotts with another part of DA. A motorized Hogwarts express would surely be a lower price point? More like the Disney train at $330. With that you got a decent sized train and a large station, plus the motors. I can't see how they would add an extra $140 (even trying to take into account inflation). A few extra carriages? Maybe, but LEGO tend not to do repetitive builds like that. And they probably wouldn't do two stations in one set. Maybe another Ford Anglia, but that's not going to contribute much. And how would it be so much better than the current one at $400 less? Unless they did a really big one. Just for display. I'm sure it would be cool if they did it though. And probably really profitable. So who knows. Ministry has potential. A mechanized/motorized Grimmauld Place possibly. A large, movie accurate version of the Great Hall and Tower? Buildable objects with broom and sorting hat? But I'm for another six months of UCS Dobby's sock campaigning. -

I suspect budget, and that the interior space would be really cramped, given what they typically try to do with it. -

Might be a case of buying two and MOCing it.
