New LEGO Speed Champions 2021 Rumors, Speculation
TeddytheSpoon replied to Bartlomiej's topic in LEGO Town
I'm not yet convinced by 8-wide but I'm probably in the minority. If they can somehow up the size of the wheels a bit that'll help a whole lot. Having picked up the Elva polybag the other day I'm also hoping we get more polybags. It being 5-wide gets such a nice balance between accurate proportions and detail, which the Lambo polybag didn't really manage. For such a small set I'm really impressed by it. I miss Tiny Turbos so if LEGO wanna make more polybags, I'm all for it.- 755 replies

I didn't know about the red for stress fractures, that is interesting and makes sense. I think they probably do have a smaller injection moulding setup for prototypes, but I don't think it would necessitate a night shift. They're not often quick to start up, but with the small quantities required for prototypes you could probably start up, do a small batch and close it off within a day. The possibility of genuine prototypes is there, but the night shift story throws up a lot of questions for me.
-
I thought they'd made the switch a while ago, but don't quote me on that. The idea that these are prototypes is... somewhat believable, although they do seem to be popping up at quite the rate for supposed prototypes, which by their nature are low-volume. Equally... Why prototype a Vader figure in red (or any other colour, or figure, for that matter)? That colour has been in LEGO's armoury from the start. On the assumption that they are prototypes, the only thing I can think of would be a test of the sugar-cane based plastic that plants are now made of, to see if minifigures are up to standard. Although again, why Vader and not, say, a minifigure with a similarly complicated but unlicensed hairpiece, I have no idea. As for the night-shift theory... I highly doubt it. LEGO's production process is almost entirely automated, even down to the transport of bricks. So not only would you need to fill the bins with a different colour of plastic, you would need to purge the previous colour from the injectors (which are huge, by the way), prevent the printing from happening, and cut off the production line at the point where the pieces are thrown into bags and boxes, before doing it another 23 times and THEN putting it all back to how it was before. The actual production time would be fairly quick given how many of these are produced at once, but the machine down time would be colossal, and would definitely not go un-noticed. That's a hell of a lot for one person to do for the sake of a quick buck. The theory that these are prototypes for a new plastic mix is semi-plausible notwithstanding the fact that they seem to be popping up everywhere. I won't buy the night-shift theory unless an employee can explain how they did it. They look cool, but I do think these are probably knock-offs.

I didn't cast a vote in the ballot, but I will probably pick up the gunship as it's a fairly unusual UCS set. I would've preferred it to be around the $200 mark purely for my wallet's sake, but I'm prepared to break the bank as it will be the first time in a while I'll be able to afford something that big. -

Pimp My Ride tie-in when? I was thinking about the diversity point - SC has been pretty good at bringing in some of the more niche car interests. I feel like we normally get at least one of those each wave - we've had a hot rod, vintage F1 car, Dakar, FE, the Nismo from last year was a drift car even if it wasn't explicitly stated IIRC. I forget what they're called but since LEGO seem to be doing Japanese cars now, how about some of the crazy souped-up monsters? That would make for a crazy set.- 755 replies

Ditto. Not one of the statues has taken my interest so far but this has me intrigued at the very least. Am I correct in thinking the rumoured price was 70 bucks for this one? -

Well, that's one way of getting around tow cables! Great concept, very well executed. I'm immediately drawn to thinking of more track-ified vehicles... All-Terrain Scout Crawler perhaps? -

I had thought about that as a possibility for the Chevrolet set before we had the contents confirmed. Would be cool but I'm not sure they'd do three US-based sets in one wave. I'd happily be proved wrong in this case though!- 755 replies

New LEGO Speed Champions 2021 Rumors, Speculation

Aston Martin would be great, they could very easily do the one-new-one-classic combo in a two pack (which I think it's safe to assume this one will be). They could conceivably make one of the cars an F1 car - it's been a while since we've had one and AM are back in the sport this year - but I doubt LEGO would've been given enough info, if any, to base a set on it. I suspect it'll either be a European brand or something based in professional motorsport. I mentioned off-roading a few posts back and think that's pretty likely as we've had some sort of rally car or otherwise for the last few waves, and with Extreme E kicking off this year that seems like an obvious choice for me. You could have one XE car and one Dakar, although the Mini set was partially based on Dakar and that only just retired.- 755 replies

I hadn't even clocked that, that is kind of surprising. I guess the size difference between cars gets lost when every car is scaled up to 8 studs wide. June according to Prombricks.- 755 replies

New LEGO Speed Champions 2021 Rumors, Speculation
TeddytheSpoon replied to Bartlomiej's topic in LEGO Town
The C8-R and the dragster should be the only cars with liveries. The Jesko will be white with lime green trim, the Supra yellow, the Jesko blue as per the polybag, the '68 Corvette C3 will be red and the Charger purple. That's all according to the Promobricks article.- 755 replies

Apart from the F1 cars! I imagine most of these will have stickers for headlights, which I'm not a fan of personally. I think the last wave had only two cars with brick-built headlights (the Quattro and the I-Pace).- 755 replies

Latest info courtesy of Promobricks: 76900 Koenigsegg Jesko - 280pcs, EUR19.99 76901 Toyota GR Supra - 299pcs, EUR19.99 76902 McLaren Elva - 263pcs, EUR19.99 76903 Chevrolet Corvette C8-R & '68 Corvette C3 - 512pcs, EUR39.99 76904 Mopar Dodge/SRT top fuel dragster & '70 Dodge Challenger - 627pcs, EUR59.99 76905: Unknown set & pc number, EUR49.99 A reasonably interesting mix - @RacerRabbit and particularly @Kit Figsto pretty much nailed the top-fuel dragster prediction! The Chevrolet set sounds particularly interesting, the C3 is a beautiful car so hopefully it looks good. I'm hoping the Supra comes with a Gazoo Racing livery as well. EDIT: apparently it'll be yellow. Ah well, still an interesting colour I suppose. The Dodge Challenger will supposedly be purple - is this the first purple SC car? As for that surprise last set, I would hope for something off-road related given everything else is tarmac-based. Extreme E or Dakar would be cool.- 755 replies

The new shuttle actually doesn't look too bad in that video review IMO. I think the comparison with Tyderium is similar to the story with the two latest MTTs - both good sets in their own right, but since the first one set such a high bar the second one will always look disappointing in relative terms. I'd probably buy it if I didn't have Tyderium. -

I just noticed something while dismantling my TIE Fighter - the light bley 1x10 plates on the leading edges of the wings appear to have bent while in position. Has anyone else noticed something similar? I'm aware LEGO bricks are liable to bending under tension, but I've only had it built for a month. -
I think dark tan torsos would be a better match personally. You could use the rebel technician or Bespin Luke torsos; sticking with Indiana Jones you could use Dovchenko or Belloq's torsos to get some more variety.

That lander is gorgeous, you've absolutely nailed the shaping.

Shuttle seems OK, the cockpit definitely looks weird but the rest is actually fairly good. The UK is getting a bum deal on that though - I would've expected a $70 set to be no more than 60 quid, S@H UK has it at 70. The Tauntaun and AT-AT both look adorable though. I do like Luke's hooded head, that could be very useful for some racing driver figs. -

I think the latest information is that the $30 set is some sort of retail exclusive. It's almost certainly the only $30 set this wave though. -
I imagine Squadrons hasn't been in the limelight much because of the High Republic - that is getting a lot of hype. The story in Battlefront II (or IV, I always found the way EA numbered them annoying) had the advantage of providing a bit more context to the upcoming sequels; I haven't played Squadrons yet, but from what I can gather it also provides context around the sequels - but they're now already released rather than upcoming. There is some new stuff, but apparently it ties in pretty closely with the Alphabet Squadron books. Also, BFII (IV) was the first mainline Star Wars game since BFI (III), which was bantha poodoo. Squadrons has to compete with those two and Fallen Order. I'd like to think we'll see more 501st style sets, although the rumoured set list doesn't seem to support that POV (mystery $30 notwithstanding). But since we had clones in the last one, I don't think we'll see more clones in a set like that for another two or three years, assuming they keep making them.
-
I'd love the Mantis as well, but I think the only reason it isn't getting made is as the game is rated PEGI 16, which isn't the case for the IT-S. I'm not sure LEGO would associate themselves with that (BFII battle packs notwithstanding, although that was PEGI 12 I believe). I do really hope we get High Republic stuff. Lucasfilm is clearly doing a massive push for it so it would be good to see LEGO get involved.

Welcome! It sounds like you have some interesting powers... Ever thought of buying the Radiant VII set? Asking for a friend... It's an interesting thought but I think they'll probably stick with the existing helmet moulds - they get more than enough information across for Mando helmets. I do wonder how effective Gar's helmet will be though; that will be one fiddly mould to get the horns looking right. I suppose there's a possibility they would be dual-moulded. -

I'm not sure it has any bearing on what sets we get, but so far we've got two European, two American and one Japanese. I would guess the last one would be another European brand based on where brands tend to be concentrated. It does seem like there might only be one that's based on a motorsport vehicle (presumably the Toyota) rather than just a supercar/muscle car as the rest are, so my guess would be for one of those. Personally I'd love to see a touring car; we got the Nismo last year which I think is a Super GT vehicle, so maybe a DTM Audi? It'd be mega if it was one of the vintage BTCC cars - my vote would be for the Williams Renault Laguna or the Volvo 850 Estate. EDIT: saying that, I have just thought of Indycar being a possibility for the Chevrolet set, and the more I think about it the more I like it. Could be a two-pack with either one speedway and one road-course spec car, or a pace car (although that might be a Corvette IIRC) with one Indycar and the parts to swap between the two setups. Obscurity for US vehicles outside the States is probably why we get so many muscle cars in fairness, since they're really the only ones recognisable to the rest of the world. It's a shame for petrolheads - along similar lines it would be cool to see a Holden in the line-up, but outside Australia and petrolheads it might have limited appeal.- 755 replies

I know the 4+ sets aren't supposed to be anything special, but this one feels so phoned in even by that low standard. They could've at least thrown in a bit of village wreckage or something? I can't imagine that will sell well at all.
