I personally don't care if somebody chooses to build with Enlighten or another knock off, but I personally don't recommend it, due to the poor quality of the bricks. That being said, I am glad that I bought the one ship from them, because it came with mirrored swords that look great and do fit will with actual Legos. It's almost worth it to buy a whole Enlighten ship instead of buying swords like these on Bricklink.

I hope the knock-off wasn't from Enlighten! They look like Legos, but really don't fit very well (I bought the Enlighten Black Seas Barracuda a few years ago, too). You're off to a good start here. I got back into Lego about five years ago now, when I went into the old suitcase holding my Legos from when I was a kid, and rebuilt my old Caribbean Clipper- then immediately started modifying it. It looks like you're following the same path, and you've come to the right place for it. There's tons of tutorials and building advice to be had here, from hulls to rigging to guns. Enjoy!

Every time I hear the word "juggernaut", I think of Andy Levy saying that "a juggernaut is a jugger that has been to space."

Yeah, the bottom floor is kinda dull, now that I look at it. I wasn't really in the swing of things yet. If I ever get to build this, I'll probably add some paintings or something to spruce it up some.

Most of us still think your ship is excellent :-) Any chance we can get some pictures of the underside?

It's the Imperial Flag Bounty! Great job on the recolor, and on changing enough of the minor details to make it your own.

What pieces did you use to make the bottom level of the hull?
-
You're my hero, Kurigan. I've been trying to find more pictures of that ship for ages :-) Upon looking at Sang Royale, I think it's actually a really good reference for this project. The color scheme used on her is pretty much identical to the one you're using, Franco. I'd draw ideas from her, if I were you.

My exact words when I clicked your link were, "Hmmmm..." A very interested and thoughtful "Hmmmm..." to be precise. Extra points for the minifig scale soap crate :-) Your argument about the side walls is very well taken, as is your statement regarding ammunition sizes. I wasn't considering any of those when I made my statements, and you have valid points on each of those. I was looking at it purely from an exterior appearance view. As for working area for the gun crews, it's something I've always thought about as well. When I first built my flagship Thunderchild, she had four or five studs between each gun, in order to afford room for the gun crews to do their thing. It looked like a lot of wasted space, though, so I wound up redesigning it with less space. I think it looks better, but in the real world, it leaves very little space for gun crews to work.

Oh, I forgot to mention in my earlier reply, I think it looks a lot better with the three center ports on level with each other :-) I had to go back and look at how I did the sterns on my MOCs. For the most part, the sterns are all black and white, with yellow accents just on the very aft of the hull. However, all of my captain's cabins are flush with the hull, whereas yours is not. Given this, I think that having yellow where you have it is fine. Additionally, something that bugged me in all of my MOCs is that I couldn't make the white stripe go through the 1x2x3 inverse angle bricks on my sterns (the type of piece that is brown in your picture above). Having it all yellow eliminates that problem for you. There is historic precedence for colored cabin structures like you have, as in the case of this model: http://tinyurl.com/gq4of2u There are also several other MOCs that have similar color scheme changes for their cabin windows. The magnificent Achille is one such example: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=51308 Another example, though I'm having a hard time finding her thread, would be Sang Royale. There's a small picture here: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/hms243/SangRoyale/sang_royale_3.jpg You'll notice she's not a frigate, but it's an example of your type of coloring nonetheless. So I wouldn't sweat the parts that are already yellow too much if I were you. At the very most, I would make your brown piece black, as well as the post ahead of the corresponding window (but leave the 1x1 round yellow). That's not really critical, though, IMO. I would concentrate first on the shape of your stern above the windows, then on the color scheme. If you wind up making the changes to black that I mentioned before, then I would make above the windows black, with yellow accents (Achille is kind of like this). If you keep it all yellow, though, then you'll probably want to stick with yellow, and go with multi-colored accents. As always, though, it's your ship. If you think it looks better another way, by all means do it that way :-)
-
You may try swapping the 1x2s above the angled pieces with black ones. That may give the black a more tapered appearance. You could also try running the black all the way to the stern, so that the portion above the windows can then be black, allowing you to have yellow accents that will really pop out. Alternately, if you end the black on the sides of the hull, above the windows, then you would probably want a yellow stern above the windows, with blue and/or red accents. Are you planning on putting the ship's name on that plate below the windows? If not, you could try cheating a little, and printing an ornate sticker with the name written on it. That's what I've done with most of my ships.

I think your stern looks good thus far. You've got a lot of detail potential in the remaining portion, and that is what will make or break the stern, in my opinion. Captain Green Hair is quite the master, though. If there's anybody that can give good advice on this, it's him.

Seriously, dude, get a Flickr account. It's easy to deeplink if you use them :-)

Lending further credence to your argument, most frigates of the period carried 18-pounders or heavier. If the Lego guns seem accurately sized for a 9-pounder, then they may actually be too small for an 18.
-
I think the mast distances aren't too bad, though historically the space between the fore and center masts was generally greater than the space between the center and the aft masts. You may want to consider moving your aft mast forward a few studs. An easier way to distract from the mast distances, though, maybe be to fill that space with more sail. If you have any triangle sails left, you may want to consider using them between the masts, like so: I concur with Captain Becker's statement about your center mast height. I would go with Phred's suggestion, and add one of the smaller sails to the top of your center mast. If you don't want to add another sail (if you're using the Lego sails then that may be impractical), you could try raising your center mast a bit, so they aren't all the same height. It shouldn't be too difficult to do that, just add a few blocks under the base. I also feel obliged to echo Captain Becker's concern over the space between the guns, particularly on your lower deck. It would lower your gun count, but it may look better to have two or three studs between each gun. At the very least, it would make the gap for your ladders less noticeable. On looking again, though, if you raised all of your masts by two bricks (and the center mast by 3 or 4), you could eliminate that ladder space on your lower deck, and gain twelve studs. If you spread out your guns and took advantage of that space, you would actually gain the space for another gun on your lower deck, like so: And it wouldn't require any changes to your upper deck. It's your MOC, of course, so feel free to disregard all of this.

So I wouldn't be able to reproduce this effect in LDD :-D I think this is awesome, and I want to build one now.

I actually like this a lot, and I think it could have purpose in BoBS as a smuggler or scout of some kind. At the very least, it's a very interesting build I'm very curious to know what the part numbers are for the deck pieces, and also how you got the sides to mount to the hull with a smooth taper. The only thing I can think of is that you placed a 87087 (1x1 with one stud) on every other outboard stud, kinda like this... ...then rotated the 87087s accordingly and attached your 2x4 plates to them. If that's not it, I'm very interested to see how it is :-)

I'm still trying to decide on the gunport color, actually. If your hull is going to be mostly black and white like that, then I agree with Kurigan, and say you should get more blue flaps. If you plan on extending the blue and yellow at the top, or add more blue elsewhere on the hull, then I think the red should be fine. You might want to think about raising your lowest gunport to the same level as the two on either side of it, as well. That would give more of a "curved" look to your hull, rather than a shallow V. I disagree about the brick built guns for the main battery, though. They're great for carronades and such on the upper deck, however. Kurigan, I'd like to thank you for posting your tumblehome experiment. I've been trying to think of a good way to secure it at the top as well as at the bottom. Your idea is excellent :-)

You're off to a good start! This little fella looks like he's ready to cause some mischief! Better keep him away from anybody bigger, though...

[MOC] The Devil Lady - new ship for the redcoats
Cousarmy0001 replied to Dreamweb's topic in Pirate MOCs
At first glace I wasn't really impressed with this build, but I kept looking, and my opinion changed considerably. I think the doors on the lower portion of the sterncastle are an interesting idea, and I love a lot of your small brick-built details. The statues and snakes on the sterncastle are a cool idea, I love how you used 1x3 doors on the stern, and the lines you have running along the hull to hang your gun ports off of do a lot to add a visual appeal to the sides. The alternating 1x4 bricks and 2x2 reverse slopes under the gunports add visual appeal as well. I also love that you have a hatch (I don't know the period term) on the bow leading below-decks, and you use the natural step of the bow to form steps for the crew. I'm probably going to borrow that idea in the future, if you don't mind... Furthermore, every time I design a ship, I try to add appeal to the sides by using different colors (I usually have a black and white design, but I add a blue stripe to the top of the white, and above that I'll put a colorful chequerboard pattern like Maive Auslebrook has. You've managed to have plenty of detail and appeal using just one color throughout. I'm highly impressed. I think the best Idea you had in this, though, was not using a regular stern piece. Every time I design a ship, the biggest problem I face is shoehorning a decent captain's cabin into the tapering stern piece. It's a very limiting feature. It never occurred to me to just not use one. I would have been concerned that the stern would look weird, but yours looks terrific. An excellent build all around!
