Lego and SimCity....could it ever happen or work out well?
glendo replied to TheLegoPerson9's topic in Culture & Multimedia
Im from the Simcity background before i returned to lego.... that's too deep down the rabbit hole. this is one step deeper, building brick by brick whereas Simcity is building streets, towns, cities, suburbs. the scales is out of proportion. -
Andy D - Colours are free choice (although i feel the blues are a signature of MS) the design is free choice. As long as it has the familiarity of MS in the end. TheLegoDr - Yes. the idea is a reboot of MS with new parts, colours, styles, build techniques. Translation of end product hopefully looks familiar but does not need to be identical. You guys get the idea.... Its 2015, let's see everybody's idea of a modern look and take on this. Concept: If MS was being released in 2015, show us what it would look like? - How many ppl are interested in submitting? - LDD or real bricks allowed? - one month comp? - judged by peers. If we could get a minimum of 5 entrants I think it would be great, but the more the merrier.

EDIT: DAMMIT! 2015 not 2014!!!!! <---------- my bad! I just had an idea, and it covers a couple of topics we have discussed on this forum. Market St.... It's not really one of the modulars, but is treated like one. We all regularly talk it's build quality compared to the others. Star Wars is famous for getting rebooted sets and newer versions of models, so i dreamed up this idea for a modular reboot! I propose for a small challenge/Contest within this very talented community that we come up with a 2015 spec Market st. proposed parameters: - roughly the same size - roughly the same colours We dont have comps on here as much as some of the other sub-forums (we are well overdue for another modular comp), so this could one to pass the time. No prizes, just all the glory. If we can get a few interested competitors, we could then collaborate on duration, rules, judges, scoring and other nitty gritty. this is just an idea i wanted to put out to the forum community as a small in-house contest. *this topic will be deleted in the next 24hrs if no-one is interested

checked licensed (because of Ferrair), checked town, checked special area.... HELP! and can we please update the labelling of the sub-forums to accommodate these new lines??........................

TLG is laughing all the way to the bank... AFOLs buy two sets to make up for their shortfall... Cha Ching of the cash registers
-
Bingo! once again proving the Part count BS. Here's all the modulars by weight (ref Bricklink): CC - 2591 (grams) GG - 3180 MS - 1780 FB - 2761 GE - 2903 PS - 2820 TH - 3825 PC - 2770 PR - 2610 DO - 2624 Reduction? Yes, but still higher than CC was... but CC was empty inside.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
glendo replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I know that market st at was... I'm talking about doing it again. 2014 quality MOC turned into a set. That was a long time ago now, we have come along way since then. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
glendo replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Why don't they make a MOC into a set? Some of the modulars presented here are breathtaking, it would be a coup for TLG to make another AFOL creation into production -
The whole forum is not necessary, but it brings people together to share thoughts and ideas.

i disagree. they are popular or iconic sets today because they are adult orientated, complex and seen as architectural wonders. remove this prestige from them (thus make large doll-houses), then it's over. you have killed the goose for it's golden eggs. Creator shops and houses are to cater for this. the Modulars are grand and complex buildings the DO is leaning towards being a super-sized creator set akin to the bicycle shop/pizza shop

I have my PR sitting on computer right now, and I've taken off each level to analyze it's contents....... where is this super high level of detail that sacrificed space? -the Top floor's roof is not actually detachable, so the area where the door is cannot really be accessed. - the middle floor is sparse. outside furniture for restaurant is commendable. - ground floor completely furnished. I dont see super high level of detail compared to other modulars here... the ground floor is on par with GG's ground floor, and the other two floors are comparable with GE and LESS that TH's interior design. we just got ripped off in size. Let's see how DO gives us more detail......................................................
-
Part count is a trick... Ignore it for size/weight/height dimensions.
-
I recall the release video of the PR explaining that size was sacrificed for interior detail this time round. I'm famous for constantly going on about the size of the PR. It now appears from studying the brickset review, this BS has been used again, and is probably the new norm for modulars. The part count is rubbish so let's put that aside. I will use weight to get my point across. IMO, they are bedazzling us with 300 grams of additional interior, then reduce the exterior by 800 grams. Giving with one hand whilst taking with the other. Leave the storyline for city sets. Give me grand buildings with strong and robust designs. I will still buy it, I still like it, but I can see through the cost cutting. Sadly, these gen 2 modulars (PC-DO) will never compare to the gen 1 modulars (CC-TH).

OK, my turn: GG/CC/GE/TH/FB/PS/PC/PR/MS GG - is the perfect modular. Beautiful, grand and detailed both inside and out. CC - was the first and the standard all must be compared to, and I actually like the colour scheme they used. If it had an interior it would probably be amazing GE - was the first set I bought that wasnt SW...and kicked off my modular addiction. It's a box, but it is almost exactly how a corner store in europe would look. TH - I love the size, the colour, the interior and grandeur of this building. A necessity for a town layout, and IMO the centrepiece in a row of modulars FB - A great build, I have no personal dislike for any part of it. I love the brick texture, and I hope future modulars have garage doors. PS - Fun, versatile and different. PC - I consider this the first of the "2nd Gen" Modulars, it's the first time I've seen cost cutting impact the outside of the modular (red rooftop not being plated boths sides) PR - I dont actually rate it that much. I feel ripped off by it, it's too small compared to the others. MS - Great for it's time, but not in the present. Outside looks ok, inside is terrible.

great feedback from all so far. Im waiting to throw my choices into the arena until later, but im glad the replies are rolling in. Thank you very much

Team, I have thought of a little survey if anyone is interested: List your favourite modulars in order of preference, and explain why? (Market street included) - you could list them as follows: (example) CC/GG/TH/PR/PC/PS/MS/etc. etc. And im curious to read why you have a favourite and a least favourite: - My fav is CC because it's the first one, it is the standard to follow................ - I dont like the PS much because it's not tall enough....................... (please dont include DO as yet, because we havent had the chance to buy or build it as yet. Feel free to add it later). I will tally up the data at a later date.

I love it! It has a very Singaporean feel to it!!

Dutch Amsterdam style with lots of dark reds, dark browns and tan would be alright. -

i'd love a bank, or a video arcade. i'd also like another garage door type of modular like the FB... maybe a car dealership. id prefer not to get a corner building. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
glendo replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I look at the inside only when Im building it. I look and see the outside everyday. -
here's my completed BL and Modified CC: - Variations of windows and door parts - Some colour swapping - Modded Tile area - Black roof - No Hotel sign (not a fan of it) I might slowly update it to be just like an original, but im in no rush. It's 90% of the way there and Im happy. only cost me $120 on BL in extra parts
