According to the speculation from StoneWars, the Volvo Loader won't be pneumatic.... which I had actually hoped for ... Still, if Lego not completely butcher this model, this is a first day purchose.

Small update from the truck: After changing the middle part over and over again to get good connection points for the front part, I finally settled with a very stable design. The overall height of the cab is now exactly the same as the 42175. The cab has no suspension and no ackermann steering, but a very nice steering angle. The only downside is: The steering wheel is 1.5 studs too high :-/ ... now I wish for a CV-joint male part, like cutting this part in half... Workaround would be placing the final 12T bewel gear for the steering wheel under the 20T tan bewel gear, but this would mean the front wouldn't be that rigid and also it would steer in the wrong direction :D

Normally I don't bump old threads, but I have to let out some steam ... Just saw this set for a big discount and grabbed it. @M_longer You mentioned before all the problems with the model itself in finished stage, but I already struggle with the building part. I have built about 40 official Technic sets in my time and never ever have I been more confused about such strange combinations of techniques and assemblies. It makes no sense for me as there are multiple steps that are neither structurally sound nor do they look good in any way. I can accept some wonky things if they were made for good looks, but here, nothing makes sense. Especially the first building step of the rear part is horrendous. There is no stability in the steering assembly, the main fix point is the 12T gear for the manual operation. Same stability problems with the mower assembly, totally wobbly. One assembly is held only by a half-stud bushing. But at least it looks good and works sufficiently. And the most important thing: The build doesn't flow. Everyone of us know the feeling, when you completed an assembly and say to your self: "Whoa, cool, now it makes sense!" This is the first model where I didn't had this feeling at any time during the build. I got the impression the designer simple gave up at some point, at latest when the management said: You got to uses these road wheels and strange wheel arches. Or maybe one designer took over and finished some parts another designer started and intentions switched. But enough rant. Here is the ONLY positive point: There are rare green parts useful for good JohnDeere mocs. Thats it. If this had been my first technic model, I'd never have come out of my dark ages and started this hobby. Also first time I ever disassambled a set right after completion.

Your post spoke out of my heart. It's really hard to find a model which totally convince me to buy/build, though there are very excited new parts which were a mere wish 10 years ago like planet gear hubs or 19x3 liftarms. Still I am always hopeful for upcoming sets.

Long time ago I mentioned the idea of a "Classics Line" in Lego Technic where exactly such older, technically more interesting machines would be placed. Like steam roller, old long-nose trucks, old tractors, classic cars (from the 10s/20s/30s)...

Are you going to use the new ball-joint connectors for the steered axle? :-)

What a beautiful build with very nice blend of technic and system pieces! You should include a pic of the real build here ;-) Did you thought about using the narrow 49.5 x 14 tires? Would look even better in my opinion and give a little better steering angle :-P

You are right, the scale of the Claas is nearly the same as the truck. But I wouldn't count this as "very small" scale, instead it's the "regular" scale, as the 42098 defines the most used scale for both trucks (49,5 tires) and cars (43,2 tires). ;-) As I mentioned, it's also easier for stability reasons. The long timber truck failed cause there was no way the crane could lift the dolly onto the carrier truck, which was a main goal in the abandoned model. This crane however, with a few tweaks, might do the trick. Shrinking down from 62.4 wheels to 49.5 wheels (factor 1,26) means half the mass (1,26^3 = 2). Even the crapple crane on the truck in this model is kind of overscaled when compared to the real one. Also I like to go for the principle of "as big as needed, as small as possible". But I will surely go for a bigger scale in a special agricultural vehicle I had an eye on for 2 years :D

Thanks, guys! As @amorti said, it's just two pendular axles with rubber stops. The front axle will be fixed though, as steering+inline 6 is planned.

Hi guys and gals, for long time, I had a model of a truck in mind, which initially started out as a long timber transport with a dolly in the scale of 42043. But due to stability reasons and weight of the machine and crane itself, I abandoned the project. Just when the small 49.5 tires were released and especially with the inspiring truck from the 42175, I started again, but with another idea in mind: I had a toy as a kid which I adored very much: A truck with a fast-erecting crane (hopefully it's the right word forf the german Schnelleinsatzkran, taken from english Liebherr website). This truck/crane combination was so stunning, but just when I saw one in real life many years later, where the truck itself had a grapple crane and used it for mounting the weights onto the main crane, it really clicked for me. Again, when the new weight elements were introduced with the 42146, I knew the time had come to tackle this model. My main two goals are playability and modularity. I already thinking about using the truck platform for other projects, even returning to the long timber transport is maybe possible in this scale... but for now, here are the first pics of the truck without the cab. Especially the suspension with the rubber part and 10197 works very nice and is very compact. Not sure about the cabin, yet. Maybe I will try to make it generic, but thinking about modelling it losely based on a MAN TGA truck. Creative input is always welcomed :-)

Nice to see you recovered and heartfully hope you are doing well! Reading your describtion of the finished set, the dozer seem to be a very similar beast to the 42100 and very Kossmann like in all its glory. Looking forward seeing you start your next model :-)

Very well said. but in my opinion, a 42100 without the app assisted features wouldn't work that well. But there surely are so many models which would benefit from more physical control with 1 dumb battery box and 1 or 2 motors, especially when the would introduce an efficient pneumatic pump and angled connectors (L-shape with one female rubber side and one male side connecting to hoses).

Sales managers okayed this. The design team surely put a fake engine and diffs in it, but it exceeded the aim for the parts limit. I really feel sry for the designers team... they surely look at this and say: "wait, why was this approved? the only advantage to the 42147 ist the third axle..."

I think you got no comments on this beauty because everybody was just speechless at the level of perfection you achieved :D

Great MOCs of iconic tractors! Have you tested the tracked version of the JohnDeere in Bricks? I'd love to see a video of this machine :-)

I'd pay good money just to sit in the brainstorming-meeting which is held between the designers and CEOs of Lego, when they decide for the new models. Designers: "Hey there are cool excavators from Volvo, can we do those?" CEOs/Managers: "You mean there are multiple excavators...? Just like multiple cars...?" Designers: "Well sure, but I think one excavator in a years line-up is sufficient..." CEOs/Mangers: "Very good! We make 2 exvatacors this year! Both from Volvo!" Designers: "Really...? Whatever, at least anything else but cars...."
